O'Connor's Puissance Victory Equals All-Time Record
Twenty-two
yr old Irish rider Cian O'Connor lived up to his promise at today's
(Saturday) Kerrygold Horse Show in Dublin with a breathtaking win
in the Puissance competition, equalling the all-time RDS height
record of 2m25 (7'5").
Having
signalled his determination to please the home crowd with the only
Irish clear round in the Aga Khan Trophy competition on Friday,
the young Kildare rider rode <Irish Independent Casper> clear
in the fifth round to equal the record set in 1998, and beat a crack
international field of eight other riders.
O'Connor
was one of three left in the fifth round jump-off, but both Britain's
Tim Stockdale on the Puissance veteran <Fresh Direct Wiston Bridget>
and France's Christian Hermon on <Fucson de Granlieu> toppled
the coping of the giant wall. O'Connor and his ten year-old grey
gelding were last to jump, and cleared the wall with apparent ease,
picking up prize money of Eur 6,250. The Kerrygold appearance was
<Irish Independent Casper's> first ever Puissance competition.
Earlier
in the day, O'Connor was one of a giant field of 22 riders who qualified
for the jump-off in the Kerrygold Mini Grand Prix, and finished
in Fourth place, riding <ABC Landliebe>. The morning competition
was won by Italy's Bruno Chimirri on <Australe>, while Irish
rider Cameron Hanley took Third with <Gypsy de Bacon>.
