Sweden's
Fredericson Brothers Launch Hickstead Assault
Sweden's
Fredericson brothers are out to make their mark on this year's British
Jumping Derby Meeting at the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead
(August 22-25). Jens will be defending last year's Hasseroeder Speed
Derby win and younger brother, Peder, runner up in the Mitsubishi
Eventing Grand Prix at the Golden Jubilee Royal International Horse
Show, will be a serious challenge to 2001 British Jumping Derby
winner, Peter Charles.
A
win by Fredericson junior will not only give him the £20,000
purse and put Sweden in the Hickstead Derby record book for the
first time, but it would give him also the £50,000 H&M
bonus, for which he has qualified with a third place in last month's
Falsterbo Derby.
This
year's British Jumping Derby (August 25) will be hard fought. As
well as the Charles and Fredericson assault, three Whitakers - John,
Michael and Robert - are already well fancied, but ranked alongside
them is last year's runner up, Nicky Boulter, Norman Dello Joio,
Robert Smith and Tim Stockdale, who is making his last home appearance
before heading for the World Equestrian Games.
Friday's
Osborne Refrigerators Derby Trial will give show jumping fans their
ideal chance to assess their favourites for Sunday's competition.
They will also be able to see possible future lady winners and potential
Derby horses in the Horseware Ireland Ring (ring two) in Sunday's
Fordyce Curry British Ladies Jumping Derby
Hickstead
has introduced this competition in an effort to end the 29 year
drought of British Jumping Derby lady winners - the last was Alison
Dawes in 1973 - and to identify horses with Derby potential.
On
a lighter note, previous British Jumping Derby winners are being
invited to take part in Sunday's Osborne Refrigerators Celebrity
Scurry, which could make their showjumping experience look tame!
Another
highlight for Sunday will be Hickstead's rousing send off for British
teams competing at the World Equestrian Games in September. Riders
and drivers selected for Driving Trials, Eventing, Showjumping,
Dressage, Endurance, Vaulting and Reining will parade in front of
the crowds around the International Arena at 2.25pm.
