USET Awards Grants to World Equestrian Games and World Championship Athletes

Gladstone, NJ—August 28, 2002—On June 24, 2002, the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Board of Trustees approved a financial needs based grant system to assist athletes who are qualified to compete and train internationally but are unable to pay the cost associated with such competition and training.

There are times when discipline specific funding is insufficient to pay all international competition and training, costs and individual athletes and/or owners are sometimes required to pay the pro rata cost. There may also be times when a deserving individual is unable to attend a training session or competition because of the cost, and the USET Athlete Grant would be available to assist in such a situation.

In 2002, the USET Board of Trustees approved, and has awarded, $50,400 in Athlete Grants to individuals who have been selected for the 2002 World Equestrian Games or World Singles Driving Championships. The individual grants range from $3-4,000 per athlete. The grants are intended to help offset expenses of athletes who have been selected for these World Championships (team, individuals and alternates) and whose expenses have not been fully funded through discipline restricted contributions to the USET. To be eligible an athlete's (or parents’ if athlete is under 18 years of age) income must not exceed $125,000.

The USET Grant Recipients are:
