Champion Defends Title

Last year`s World Mounted Games Champion Melanie Scott retained her title at the World Individual Mounted games Championships, held at Newark and Notts Showground.

Riding Tessa, an eye-catching part-bred Arab mare, Melanie got off to a good start scoring a maximum in the first qualifying session. High scores in the remaining two qualifiers gave her the pole position going into the final.

Here scores start from zero giving all eight finalists an equal chance. Three wins and four second places in the dramtic 10-race final was enough to ensure the trophy and title returned to Scotland.

Runner up just two points away was Bryony Sheldon from Cheshire with Kira, and also Melanie`s riding team mate in the Yorkshire team.

``Tessa went fantastic - she tried really hard to win,`` said Melanie, who is supported by www.bluesaddle.co.uk and Blue Chip Feed Balancer.

Winning the open class was Darren Williams from Coventry riding Mayfly. Going into the final race Darren and Mayfly stormed through to win by four points ahead of North Wales rider Paul Williams.

In the under 17 final 13-year-old Hollie Rauch from Cardiff showed a clean pair of heels to win. Hollie is a member of Crickhowel Pony Club which qualified for the Prince Phillip Cup final at HOYS last year, and also finished seventh in the under 15 final.

Lincolnshire rider Katie Hardy, the under 12 Wolrd Champion three years ago, led the under 15 championships. Riding Whooppee, a roan mare, Katie was pushed to the final race by Katie Hopkins from Warwickshire.

In the under 12 championship Holly Humphries finished on a score of 63 to give her the title, with Kelly Davies filling the reserve position.

The seven-day competition saw over 500 ponies and riders from throughout the world compete. More information from www.mgagb.co.uk
