Show Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Flynn Wins Punchestown, Smyth Takes Title

IT WAS an Army victory at the final competition of the 2003 Kerrygold Grand Prix League today (Saturday), but no-one could catch the League hero, 33 yr old Peter Smyth from Strabane, who already had the League title in the bag, and had no need to jump today.

Which was fortunate, as Smyth arrived at the International Sport Horse Show at Punchestown on crutches, having broken his ankle at a riding accident at home.

Capt. Gerry Flynn, riding the Minister for Defence's <Bornacoola>, won today's final Grand Prix in the lashing rain, but it was the fourth place of Lt. David O'Brien on <Boherdeal Clover> that clinched second place for him in the overall League placings, overtaking James Kernan.

Richie Moloney, riding <Appolinaire> took second at today's Grand Prix, but the points gained were not sufficient to bring him into serious contention in the league standings. Another Army rider, Lt Brian Curran-Cournane, who has been racking up points at the latter stages of the League, slotted into third today with <River Boyne>, but again could not make a dent in the top six league placings.

Peter Smyth, who won his first League title on his first outing this year on <Zara's Pride>, collects 8000 euro for the Kerrygold Grand Prix title, while another 1000 euro goes to <Zara's Pride> as the League's Leading Horse. Lt. David O'Brien wins 4000 euro as League runner-up.

Though the 2003 Kerrygold League finished in the rain, most spectators agree that it has been one of the most successful of the series, enlivened by a rapidly-changing leaderboard, and perhaps mostly by the unexpected success of outsider Peter Smyth, one of the most popular winners in recent years.
