Premio Vittorio di Capua, Gr.1, metres 1.600, Milano, San Siro; October 8, 2000 sloppy
Also run: Lidio, Onice Nero, Golden Indigo, Makeup a Mystery and Sotabrasciet. Distances. 1and half length, 1 and half length, short head. ANALYSIS. German forecast at the finish of the Group 1 of San Siro Milan: Sumitas was in evidence from the start and in front of all from half the straight, but was surpassed by inside, gradual, progressive advance of the fellow country Faberger, well ridden (and in this he didnt always succeed in the past at San Siro track) by Hammer Hansel, a jockey who knows very well the colour bearer of the Weisenhof Bloodstock. Regular attendant of less strong companies (he arrived 8th when he was in the field of Prix Jacques Le Marois, Gr 1, August 13, at Deauville), Faberger was the less considered of the three Germans in the field in Milan, although he had won the Prix Messidor, Gr 3, metres 1600, July 8 at Deauville. However all the German colour bearers were decidedly less appreciated than the British Barathea Guest who, however lost some lengths at the start (and he drew start-stall N· 1) and in the straight unsuccessfully tried to rejoin the German horses, clearly showing the troubles he had because of the tiring 2.000 campaign but also that the line of Bayerishen Zuchtrennen, Gr 1, metres 2.000, July 30 at Munich was right (2nd Sumitas, Kg 60, 5th Barathea Guest, Kg 541/2, about two lengths behind). Faberger is a son of Dashing Blade, champion two years old in Ireland in 1989: 1st in the National Stakes, Gr1, Curragh, but also in the Dewhurst Stakes, Gr 1, Newmarket; then 1st in the Prix Eugene Adam, Gr 2 at Saint Cloud and in the Gran Premio dItalia, Gr 1 at Milan; 2nd in the Bayerisches Zuchtrennen of Munich, also Gr 1. On this race depends perhaps the transfer of the sire from Great Britain to Germany in 1992, after just a cover season, because plainly he was not considered one of the best members of the charming sire line of Nasrullah Never Bend Mill Reef Shirley Heights and, in the end, the less appreciable, also morphologically, Elegant Air. Instead, Dashing Blade is now very appreciated by German breeders, but also in France and in Italy, even if the tardy Faberger (female line heritage) up to now was not among his best sons of group level. Faberger descends from a female line (family 20c) developed in Germany already from some generations, in the beginning by Gestud Zoppenbroich, and increased by Friedensbotschaf, third mother of Faberger, winner of the Prix de Flore, in France, and most of all, by Friedrichsrush, grand-mother of Faberger, winner of Preis der Diana, German Oaks. The father of mother of Faberger is the outstanding sire Caerleon, and therefore the winner of the Premio Vittorio di Capua is a product of the cross Nasrullah on Northern Dancer, more generally Nearco on Nearco, the most widespread cross in the entire thoroughbred world. The other Group race of the Milan afternoon, the Premio Dormello, Gr 3, metres 1600, reserved to two years old females, was won by the betting favourite Inner, owned by Mr. T. Corby, trained by M. Channon, mounted by C. Williams (the same connection of Barathea Guest) in front of the German Zaza Top and Macara; in 4th place was Bugia, owned by Scuderia Nordovest, trained at Rome Capannelle by Lorenzo Brogi; jockey: M. Pasquale. Roma, October 10, 2000. (Leonello Falco) For more information regarding the Italian Derby and up to date Italian racing and bloodstock information please contact Leonello Falco |
