Champions Win Renault Sports Team Award
The Irish Show Jumping
team of Kevin Babington, Peter Charles, Jessica
Kurten and Dermott Lennon tonight, December 3, received the Team Award
at
the 2001 Renault Annual Sports Awards, held in the Burlington Hotel, Dublin.
Also recognised was the team¹s Chef d¹Equipe, Tommmy Wade.
The Award was made
in recognition of the team¹s victory on June 29, 2001, in
the Senior European Show Jumping Championships at Arnhem, in the
Netherlands, when the four top Irish riders took the Team Gold Medal -
the
first time this has ever been achieved by an Irish squad.
A total of 14 nations
took part in the European Championships, and Ireland
won after two rounds, with a total of 34.04 penalties, beating Sweden
(35.19
penalties) into Silver Medal position, with Germany taking the Bronze
Medal
on 41.75 penalties.
Irish show jumpers
have won a record number of Nations Cups, Grands Prix and
other top international competitions during the last two years, and Ireland
is now one of the top show jumping nations in the world.
The Senior European
Championship is amongst the most prized titles in the
international equestrian calendar.
