Providing
More Than Cold Comfort This Winter
Now that winter is here and routines have changed are you finding
that your horse is losing condition and is generally not looking
quite as good as during the rest of the year?
The question of how to keep weight on and maintain good condition,
without overfeeding or causing behavioural problems is one which
is frequently asked. Choose a conditioning feed which is low
in starch yet contains plenty of slow-release digestible energy
(either for work or to maintain condition) and you won't go
far wrong. Such a feed will put condition on almost any horse,
but lower starch levels have the benefit of minimising the risk
digestive upsets, particularly in horses that are being fed
large quanitities. Barley-free, low starch conditioning feeds
also avoid the problems of 'hotting-up' for many horses that
have previously been difficult, as well as being suitable for
horses with a barley intolerance.
Allen
& Page's Calm & Condition is a balanced pelleted feed,
which is barley-free, low in starch, high in slow release
energy (calorie) sources such as fibre and oils, and contains
boosted levels of vitamins and minerals, as well as real herbs
and Protexin to encourage efficient digestion.
Mrs
Elaine Medley of Leicester revealed how her horse, which had
become a dangerous ride last winter, actually ended up thriving
in the adverse conditions.
'He was an incredibly fussy eater and a "poor doer"
as well. We tried lots of different feeds until we discovered
Allen & Page's Calm & Condition. Within the next few
months he was glowing with health and my daughter was able
to compete on him and win.'

This
is not the only feed to help horses with a tendency to lose weight
during the winter. Allen & Page's Weight Gain Mix is a very
popular, palatable mix which does what its name suggests. This mix
can be used on its own or in conjunction with other feeds to encourage
the desired weight gain in a flexible and controlled manner. Containing
real mint and other herbs as well as Protexin to assist efficient
digestion and promote overall health.
