FEI CHILDREN'S FINAL
Brazil's Fabio Genes Crowned FEI Children's International Jumping
Champion
The 16 qualified riders in the FEI Children's Final which took
place last Sunday 16 December in Spruce Meadows, Calgary (CAN)
started with a clean slate. Combined results from the First Qualifier
on Thursday and the Second Qualifier on Saturday determined which
competitors qualified to the Children's Final. The remaining participants
competed in the Farewell Competition
Fabio Genes of Brazil claimed the gold medal on the final day
of the FEI Children's International Jumping Final. It came down
to a four horse jump-off and Genes was the only rider to have
a double clear aboard Georgio SM. Canada's Femke van den Bosch
was second with a blistering time of 35.94 in the jump-off - almost
five seconds faster than Genes - but unfortunately pulled a fence
down.
It was a truly international top four with Maria Victoria-Perez
of Puerto Rico finishing up with a fault as well in the jump-off
in a time of 39.94. Tessa Williams of New Zealand collected the
fourth place after incurring 12 faults in the jump-off. Williams
was presented the overall Best Style Award with Calgary's Vanessa
Mannix being voted by all her peers as the winner of the "Friendship"
Award.
In the Farewell Competition earlier, it was Maggie McAlary of
the United States who won the one-round speed event.
Overall it was a thrill of a lifetime for the 32 young athletes
who have created many new, world-wide friendships. It will be
their names to watch for in the show jumping headlines in the
years to come.
Hosted for the first time in Canada, young riders from 14 nations,
aged 12 to 14, have qualified throughout the year for the right
to attend this prestigious Final.

The 2004 FEI Children's International Jumping Final will take
place in California, hosted by the Beverely Hills Equestrian Partners.
PIPPA FUNNELL IS THE SUNDAY TIMES SPORTSWOMAN OF THE YEAR
On 26 November 2003, Pippa Funnell was awarded the UK Sunday Times
Sportswoman of the Year Award in a ceremony held in London.
Finalists were judoka Karina Bryant, long distance runner Nicole
Cooke, Kelly Holmes, athletics star Paula Radcliffe, sailing star
Emma Richards, swimmer Katy Sexton, freediver Tanya Streeter,
disabled equestrian Nicola Tustain and gymnast Beth Tweddle.
In 2003 Pippa Funnell became the first rider in history to win
the Rolex Grand Slam of Eventing when she rode Primmore's Pride
to victory at the Burghley Horse Trials in Great Britain. Following
back-to-back wins in the Kentucky Three Day Event in April 2003
and the Badminton Horse Trials in May 2003, Funnell completed
the sweep of the three CCI 4* events at Burghley to win $250,000
and a Pink Gold 18-carat Rolex watch, the largest ever purse in
Eventing history.
FEI WORLD CUP DRESSAGE
CDI-W Maastricht, Netherlands, 11-14th December 2003
Germany's Heike Kemmer cemented her lead in the FEI World Cup
Western European dressage league table with a close fought victory
in Maastricht. Less than one point separated Kemmer and Bonaparte,
a now nine-year-old Hannoverian gelding found by her father Joachim
as a foal, from local heroine Anky van Grunsven riding Gestion
Salinero. This was the Olympic champion van Grunsven's first international
grand prix competition in a year where most of her time has been
spent recovering from a serious thigh fracture sustained in a
training accident at home. With Isabell Werth, Kemmer's team mate
on the gold-medal winning German European squad, in third place
on her young talent Satchmo, the top three riders performed at
a very high level on exciting young horses.
Ground Jury President Stephen Clarke (GBR) commented: " The
top three were very close. Bonaparte showed beautiful basic work
with wonderful extended trots, but could show more expression
still in piaffe and passage. Anky and Salinero showed brilliant
interpretation of the music and Isabell's Satchmo was so expressive
- the test had real highlights."
Again the season's high standard was maintained here at the first
of three Dutch qualifying shows. With four qualifiers to go, the
next takes place at Mechelen, Belgium, from 26-30 December.

place at OLYMPIA in London from 18-22 December.

FEI WALDFRIED EURO FUTURE CUP
The Final of the FEI Waldfried Euro Future Cup took place in the
beautifully decorated Festhalle of Frankfurt in the frame of the
CSI-CDI which was organised from 10 to 14 December.
Thamar Zweistra on Hexagon's Kyrian from the Netherlands, was
in the lead in the three competitions and won the Final Freestyle
Competition (Kür) with a score of 77.13%. She was followed
by Benjamin Werndl on Achille 80 (GER) and Mary Haskins-Gray on
Fregat 3 (USA). It was the first time that USA could send a wild
card to the FEI Waldfried Euro Future Cup.
Eleven young riders from 8 countries participated in the Final
of the FEI Waldfried Euro Future Cup, a Series aimed at young
Dressage riders.
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
The FEI Secretariat in Lausanne will be closed from 19 December
16:00 until Monday 5 January 2004.
