Stallion Sailing the Med Causes
Concern |
A 7 year old thoroughbred
Stallion, Shorten Sail, has spent five days in the hold of a
ferry criss crossing the mediteranean because red tape will not allow
him to land.
The ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses) is extremely
concerned
for the stallion's welfare and is doing everything in its power to sort
out the
bureaucracy that is not allowing the animal to land in Cyprus.
Says David Mountford, ILPH Director of Operations, "Because of red
tape this poor
horse is being shunted backwards and forwards across the Mediterranean.
We are
liaising with our contacts in Cyprus and DEFRA to put pressure on the
Cypriot
authorities to let this horse in."
Shorten Sail left his stud in California, USA flying to Luxembourg from
where he
travelled to Athens. He was scheduled to stopover in Greece, before resuming
his
journey by sea to his final destination in Cyprus.
The horse left the Port of Pireus, Athens on Monday afternoon 21 January
arriving at
midday in Cyprus on Wednesday 23 January, where he was refused entry because
there was a mistake on his documentation. He had to stay on the boat and
arrived in
Israel in the evening of Thursday 24 January.
He is now back in Cyprus today, 25 January, but still not allowed entry
by the Cypriot
authorities because of the mistake on his documentation. He left at noon
today for
another two day sea journey back to Pireus, Greece.
