WARD WINS AMERICHOICE OPEN SPEED
WELLINGTON, FL - February 28, 2001 - 1998 AGA
Rider of the Year McLain Ward of Brewster, NY was in the winner's circle once
more, this time aboard the chestnut gelding, 4 Seasons in the $5,000
AmeriChoice Open Speed Stake at Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington
on Wednesday. Ward, 26, and 4 Seasons blistered the 11-obstacle course,
designed by
Olaf Petersen of Germany, with the fastest time of 64.003 seconds, followed
closely by Donald Cheska of Waukesha, WI up on the 11 year old Swiss bred brown
gelding, Santos with a time of 65.610 seconds. "This is only Santos' 3rd
class," said Cheska, who will be competing in Sunday's $75,000 Tommy
Bahama Florida Open Grand Prix. "He did really well in the ring, and he
was fast, but McLain (Ward) was quicker." Third place honors went to
Wellington's own Margie Engle, five-time AGA Rider of the Year, on board Hidden
Creek's Alvaretto with a time of 66.881 seconds. The Tommy Bahama Open
continues through Sunday at Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club, with show jumping
action daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
