O'Connor Fails To Qualify For World Cup Competition After Injury Problems

Ireland's Cian O'Connor, the sole Irish rider at CSI-W Vigo, Spain, failed
tonight (Friday, February 15) to make the cut for the World Cup class
following injury to his main horse <Irish Independent Casper>.

Though Casper had jumped clear the previous night with just one time fault,
O'Connor withdrew him from the qualifying competition following soreness in
the horse's hind leg, which appeared this morning after exercise.

<It is a minor injury, and will probably clear in a day or so,> said
O'Connor, <but I just did not feel right putting him into this class. I
decided instead to give my other horse, Liffey Valley, a chance, even though
he has never jumped at this level before. I reckon he'd have to jump at this
type of class some day, so this was the opportunity. He'd acquitted himself
well on Thursday night, so I decided to give him a go.>

Liffey Valley knocked one fence tonight, and finished 23rd in the qualifying
class of 37 horses.
