The weekend continued the quest for points in qualifying for the USET Championships in Gladstone, New Jersey in June. While Thursday and Friday were so scorching hot that jackets were excused, Saturday afternoon brought torrential downpours and Sunday threatened rain all day, with intermittent showers soaking a few unlucky riders.

> Colombian rider Marco Bernal won the Prix St. Georges with Amando, an 8-year-old KWPN gelding owned by Michelle Price. Bernal has been riding him for one month and says "He's very talented. It was his third time at PSG and at first he was upset because it was very hot - he is very sensitive - but he calmed down in the ring and his test was clean, with no mistakes."

Bernal coaches Jane Cleveland, who won the new Young Horse Test for six-year-olds with Enigma, a Westphalian gelding by Ehrentusch out of Anastasia by Apart,, with a 72%. This was a Qualifying Class for the FEI World Breeding Championship Dressage for Young Horses in Verden, Germany 2001. They also place second in fourth level, test one with 66%. "You have to get a 75% to qualify for Verden, and the travel expenses to Germany are a lot, but it would be a total thrill," said Cleveland.

Romy Tota and Vincenzo won the test for five-year-olds with a 70.26%. All of the horses showing in these classes showed tremendous quality and excellent training. For more information on the Young Horse Tests go to www.dressagedaily.com.

Suzanne Ericsson's Extrem, a 12-year-old Danish gelding ridden by Hubertus Schmidt, won the Grand Prix Freestyle with 69.38%. They also placed third in the Grand Prix de Dressage with a 62.93%

Schmidt flew in from Germany and had a few days to ride before the show, but said, "It was difficult that I only had three days before the show to prepare him," said Schmidt. "In Germany we would have had scores in the seventies. I can't say that we should have had higher scores today, because we didn't have the preparation."

Schmidt , from a small town near Warendorf, has been coming to America to train Ericsson, and showed Extrem for her this weekend. He also showed the horse at the last Zada show, winning his class then as well. Schmidt rode Extrem for four years, taking him from training level to Grand Prix, and the pair won numerous big shows in Germany. Extrem came to America last October and Ericsson has been riding him since then, with Schmidt showing him to give him some experience in America. In March Ericsson and her horses will move to Virginia.

Lynda Alicki-Gilchrist of Wellington rode Impressario, an impressive dark brown KWPN gelding by Darwin out of Elina, to win the Grand Prix with 67% and place third in the GP Freestyle. The pair have had a successful season, winning the USET Grand Prix qualifier at the last Zada show with a 63%.

Oded Shimoni and Milo Mott's Epigram won the I-1 with a 69%. Epigram, who is for sale, is a 12-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding by Imperator competing for his first time at this level after not having competed for a year. "He was very good, with a couple of mistakes in the PSG (in which they placed second)," said Shimoni. "The next day he felt more experienced and was beautiful in his extensions and his pirhouettes. He is a joy to ride."

Shimoni rode Epigram as a young horse and sold him to Mott three years ago. > She was recently in a motorcycle accident and is on crutches, forcing the sale of the horse. "I would like to see him go to a super Young Rider," said Shimoni. "He could win at that."

Young rider Jackie Paxton and Cinbad, (Cellebrio x Duellinde) won the Young Riders Team and Individual tests, and Paxton also placed third behind > Courtney Raiser in both tests with Fly Over, (Fruehlingsrausch x Pia). She has been accepted to ride at Karen Rehbein's barn in Germany this summer, and > also hopes to ride at the North American Young Riders Championships representing Region 2. She has earned enough points in Region 3, but has to go to one competition in her own region to qualify.

Karen Lipp and Douwe won the Intermediaire -1 Freestyle with 69.63% despite that the sky opened up and poured rain during their test. They also continued to collect points for going to Gladstone, placing third in the Intermediaire I USET qualifier with 65.5. The pair was third at Gladstone last year and Lipp says she would like to do well with him this year before she moves him up.

Lipp also placed second on Aragonis in Fourth level test one with 67%. He is a 16.1h Oldenburg that she says is "really green. I'm pleased with him because he was steady and light and I'm riding him for his very small owner." Aragonis was imported from Germany as an approved stallion but they gelded him because his owner is an amateur.

Carol Lavell and Much Ado won third level test two and were second in third level test one but had to scratch from their last ride, third level test three, when the horse developed and abscess in his hoof. "We were all braided and ready to go," said Lavell, "and we were warming up. Suddenly he was off to the left. " She said that he got better and better in his work as the show went on; if his scored keep improving, that exponentially, the competition better look out!
