Markus Fuchs is the first Swiss World Cup Champion
The 23rd World Cup Final was held from 12 to 16 April 2001 in
Göteborg (SWE). For the first time in the World Cup history, a Swiss rider
earned the coveted World Cup title on Monday, in front of a crowd of 12.000
enthusiastic spectators. Markus Fuchs and his stallion Tinka's Boy is the new
World Cup champion after a victorious jump-off against the titleholder, Rodrigo
Pessoa (BRA) and Baloubet du Rouet.
The British pair Michael Whitaker and Handel II took the 3rd place
ahead of another Swiss, Willi Melliger and Calvaro V. Forty five riders from 14
countries competed in Göteborg during the Easter week-end, among whom 19
were participating in a World Cup Final for the first time.
It is the 3rd time in the history of the World Cup that a jump-off
has been held to decide the winner. The first time was during the first edition
of the Final in 1979 in Göteborg and the second time in Geneva in 1996. On
both occasions, Hugo Simon (AUT) was the winner.
The Americans were very successful in Göteborg and placed 5 riders in the
Top 10. None of the 9 German riders who qualified for the Final could make it
to the Top 10.
Chieko Yamagushi, is the first Japanese lady to have competed in a Jumping
World Cup Final, she finished 37th

Meeting of the FEI World Cup Working Group:
The FEI World Cup Working Group met on Sunday, 15 April. The members are:Olaf
Petersen, Bo Helander, Tom Gordin, Franke Sloothaak and Max E. Ammann.
The following was decided or proposed to the FEIs Executive Board for
approval:
The Calendars of the 12 Leagues in the 2001 / 2002 season were approved.
In addition to the 12 events of the Western European League already approved by
the World Cup Working Group at its meeting in February in Bordeaux, the
following three events were added for the 2001 / 2002 season:
Aarhus DEN October 2001
Verona ITA November 01 04, 2001
Vigo ESP February 2002
The full Calendar will be published shortly once the remaining dates are
confirmed.
The application of Madrid was positively received. But the organisers were
asked to organise a CSI first before being considered for World Cup status in
the 2002/2003 season.
The World Cup Working Group discussed in general the selection of World Cup
events in the Western European League and to offer the selected events a 3
years agreement.
The following procedure is proposed to the FEI Executive Board:
- in late Summer 2001 all Western European indoor CSI-A events will be invited
to apply for World Cup Status.
by mid April 2002 the World Cup Working Group will select the member World Cup
events for the 2002 / 2003, 2003 / 2004 and 2004 / 2005 seasons.
- this procedure will be repeated every three years.:
Pending further investigations, no decision was taken as to the allocation of
the Final 2002. A decision can be expected by end of May.
The 2003 Final will be held in Las Vegas. Bordeaux has expressed interest in
staging the 2004 Final.
2000 FEI DRESSAGE CHALLENGE SUPPORTED BY PSI
FINAL RESULTS GROUP IX:
As was the case for Group III (competitions held in January 2001), the 2000
edition of the FEI World Dressage Challenge, supported by PSI, took place in
March in the Caribbean Group (Bermuda, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Antigua,
Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados). The FEI Judges noted with satisfaction
significant progress in most of the countries thanks to the dressage courses
financed by Olympic Solidarity and to the endless enthusiasm of the riders,
coaches and all riding fans.

FEI 2001 General Assembly
San Francisco, 24-27 April 2001
More than 80 National Federations have announced their participation to the
2001 FEI General Assembly. It is the second time that the General Assembly is
organised in the United States and for the first time on the West Coast (first
time was 1994 in Tampa, FL). The American Horse Show Association (AHSA) hosts
the meeting.
During the week, several meetings are organised in conjunction with the General
Assembly itself. The Bureau composed of the chairmen of the technical
committees and chairmen of geographical groups meet before the General
Assembly. The Forum, organised the day before the statutory General Assembly,
is an informal meeting between representatives of the federations, riders and
organisers associations and the Bureau. This year, the Forum will mainly be
devoted to the Eventing discipline and a presentation of the International
Paralympic Equestrian Committee (IPEC). A development lunch is also organised
to encourage informal discussion and create direct contacts between the Bureau
members and the Delegates of National Federations included in the Development
Programme of the FEI:
Among the main items of discussion this year will be the following::
- Finance: due to the very positive results of this year, the Finance Committee
proposes a substantive increase of FEI's reserves in line with an earlier
General Assembly decision. This is timely matter in a year when the spreading
Foot and Mouth Disease in Europe is already having an impact on FEI's income.
- Creation of new membership categories for national federations with reduced
annual subscription for developing nations:
The rules for the discipline of reining will be presented for approval. The
General Assembly accepted reining as a new FEI discipline last year.
- Strengthened cooperation with IPEC (International Paralympic Equestrian
Competitions)
- Development of a Super League for the Jumping discipline.
- Veterinary: report on Medication Control
- Future of the Eventing discipline (the discipline is undergoing a major
reflection on its future format and monitoring and improvement of safety
aspects.
- Progress report on the preparation of the 2002 World Equestrian Games in
Jerez de la Frontera (ESP)
- Olympic Games: final report on the equestrian competitions of Sydney Olympic
Games, report on Athens preparation
