FIRST FEI NATIONS CUP REINING
COMPETITION HELD IN U.S. |
The American Horse Shows Association (AHSA)
announced today that the first International Equestrian Federation (FEI)
sanctioned reining competition (CRIO) in the United States was held June 22-24,
2001 at Gladstone, NJ. Four nations competed; Canada, Germany, Japan and the
United States with riders from Germany and Japan on borrowed horses.
Following the first day of competition, Team Canada member, Jason Grimshaw on
Listo Pollito Lena owned by Robert Thompson turned in a score of 223.5 to lead
the way into the second go-round with Team USA members in second, third and
tied for fourth. Few points separated Team USA from second place Team Canada
going into the final day.
Following a close and exciting conclusion to the Nations Cup, Team Canada
earned the gold medal with 1304 points followed by Team USA on 1299. Team
Germany came in third with 1231 and Team Japan finished on 982.5.
In the individual competition Jason Grimshaw (CAN) turned in two impressive
runs to take him to the top of the podium with 445 points. The silver medal
went to Craig Johnson (USA) with 433.5 and the bronze to Pete Kyle (USA) on a
score of 433. Kimberly Horn was the first female to represent the USA in an
international reining competition.
The judges for this inaugural event were Clark Bradley (USA), Carol Rose (USA),
James Davison (USA), Jeff Delaet (BEL), Brad Kelsall (USA), and Filippo Masi
(ITA). FEI Veterinary Delegate was Dr. Ray Randall (USA) and the FEI Steward,
Eric Straus (USA).

The American Horse Shows
Association, as the National Equestrian Federation of the U.S., is the
regulatory body for the Olympic and World Championship sports of dressage,
driving, endurance, eventing, reining, show jumping, and vaulting, as well as
19 other breeds and disciplines of equestrian competition. As the country's
largest multi-breed organization, the AHSA has over 70,000 members and
recognizes more than 2,600 competitions nationwide each year. It governs all
aspects of competition, including educating and licensing all judges, stewards,
and technical delegates who officiate at these shows.
