horse DONATIONS TO THE RESCUE

Olympic silver medallist Jeanette Brakewell and international show jumper Rob Hoekstra are donating some of the equipment that has helped get them to the top to the BHS Rescue Centre. Both Jeanette and Rob are supporting an initiative to equip the centre, at Oxhill in Warwickshire, with some new gear to help the 26 horses in its care. Donations are being collected at Horse 2001, a major equestrian event taking place at Solihull Riding Club on Saturday August 11, 2001.

Jeanette and Rob are hosting clinics at the event, organised by Horse magazine, along with Jennie Loriston-Clarke, Stephen Hadley and horse behaviourist Richard Maxwell. Other attractions include a full programme of horsecare talks, trade stand shopping and a chance to try trailer reversing. Local riding clubs will be going head to head in a Working Equitation challenge. A stunning finale will be performed by El Caballo de Espana and their beautiful and highly trained Spanish horses.

Plus, the £22,000 horsebox which is being given away in a competition in HORSE magazine, sponsored by Dodson & Horrell, will be on show. The BHS Rescue Centre will be taking along its mascot, Caspar the Shetland pony, to Horse 2001. Five-year-old Caspar came to the centre two years ago in an appalling condition. He had been sold in a pub as a Christmas present, kept in a garden shed and fed kitchen scraps.

"We are looking for people to donate items we can use on a day-to-day basis, like headcollars, leadropes or grooming equipment," says Zarra Lea, manager of the Centre. "Every rider or owner has items of equipment they don't use any more and rather than letting them gather dust in the corner of a tack room, they should bring them along to HORSE 2001 and the horses and ponies rescued by the BHS can benefit."

Tickets to the event are £12 for adults, £8 for students or children under 16, while children under five are free. A family ticket is also available at £30, which admits two adults and two children under 16. Tickets can be ordered by calling (01403) 256 255.
