This year's Burghley Pedigree Horse Trials (30th August-2nd September) will host the trial for the proposed new format for the Athens Olympics.

The outcome of the trial, decided on at a recent meeting of the FEI Three Day Event Committee in Brazil, could result in the most dramatic changes to the format of Three Day Events since the sport began.

Traditionally at Burghley, those competitors who pass the horse inspection on Sunday morning showjump in reverse order to decide the final placings, with the top 25 jumping in the afternoon. This year, all the competitors will jump in the morning and the top 25 will jump for a second time in the afternoon.

The jumping in the morning will decide the result of the unofficial team competition and the lower order individual placings. The jumping in the afternoon deciding the top individual placings.

This change to the format has been proposed in order to bring together the Olympic team and individual competitions into one competition but still provide separately defined team and individual medallists.
