Tahoe Jenni Martin and The Real Thing Win $5,000 PCHA Jimmy Williams Classic at HITS Tahoe Week III

MINDEN, NEVADA (July 14, 2001)-No Jump-Off was necessary in the $5,000 Jimmy Williams Classic today-Jenni Martin, 32, of Central Point, Oregon, and The Real Thing had the only clean Round One in the seven-horse field, for an uncontested win. Martin owns The Real Thing with partner Steve McAllister, and took home a $1,500 paycheck for her ride. Course Designer Pierre Burch of Vercheres, Quebec, Canada, built today's course.

Burch's 11-fence Round One had the riders jump a series of single oxers and verticals from Fence No. 1 through 6, allowing for wide turns and long gallops in the 85-second Time Allowed. The next part of the course challenged riders with a vertical-vertical double at Fence No. 8, a triple bar at Fence No. 9, and a quick jag into the last line-an oxer at Fence No. 10 into a triple combination at the final jump, Fence No. 11, a vertical-vertical-oxer just yards before the finish line.

Macella O'Neill of Calistoga, California, who rode three horses in the class for High Ridge Ranch, started off the order of go on Deleware, and accumulated 12 faults in the fastest time, 78.904, which placed her sixth. Martin was next in the order on Astral Z, the first of her two rides. Astral Z, owned by Augustin Walch, had the last two elements of the triple down for eight faults in 84.329, taking fourth place. Cyndi Margolis of Manhattan Beach, California, was third to go on D'Artagnon, a horse she owns with her Blue Wolf Farm Inc. Margolis had 12 jumping faults and 2-3/4 time faults when she clocked in at 95.022, putting her in seventh place. Fourth on course was Haiti Du Serein owned and ridden by Elisa Fernandez of Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico. Fernandez cleared the course, but incurred a ½-second time fault for her ride in 86.284, which gave her the lead, but she ended up in second place.

O'Neill returned to try the course again with Farmer Jacque, and had a better round, but still lowered two fences for eight faults in 84.329, exactly the same time as Martin and Astral Z making it a tie for fourth place. Martin was back for her second ride, piloting The Real Thing, a Thoroughbred, to a clear round in 82.535, taking the lead and keeping it for the win. O'Neill was the last entry on course with her third and final horse, Nureyev, and challenged Martin with her time of 82.807, but had the second element down in the triple for four faults, taking third place.
