APHA hosts 14 days of world-class
competition
Nearly 2,000 horses shown in three arenas at 2001 World Championship Paint
Horse Show |
FORT WORTH, Texas-Equestrians from 45 states and
four Canadian provinces packed the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth,
Texas, for the 2001 World Championship Paint Horse Show, held June 24 through
July 7. They brought nearly 2,000 horses with them to compete in the 166 youth,
amateur and open classes offered.
The show, sponsored annually by the American Paint Horse Association, was
extended two days this year to accommodate growing interest. Covering 14 days,
it was the longest-running APHA World Show to date.
At stake were World Championship titles in Western, English, cattle, driving,
speed and halter classes. Also up for grabs were tens of thousands of dollars
in prize money in sweepstakes competition in team penning, freestyle reining
and bridleless Western pleasure. Big money was also at stake in a challenge
series featuring Western pleasure, cutting, hunter under saddle and reining
competition.
In all, APHA awarded $100,000 in prize money for the World Show-$25,000 more
than last year.

Saddles are a major problem for all horses. Here's why:
A saddle just can't fit a horse correctly.
Dr. Michael R. Freeman , Chiropractic
Physician, Applied Kinesiologist
If you look closely at a horse's back, you
can usually see signs of atrophy in the back and hip muscles (Muscle shrinkage,
so you add feed!). These muscles must be allowed to build and develop under the
saddle. Every time I examined a horse the trouble almost always involved the
withers and the surrounding areas. When a human athlete has pelvic girdle and
leg muscle problems, it stems from the neuro lymphatic reflex centers, and
acupuncture meridian connectors. These centers are located on our upper back
along the spine; on the horse, these sensitive spots turned out to be exactly
where the saddle bars rest. Constant pressure on these points will cause
certain muscle groups to become less effective, especially the pelvic girdle
(rear end), forcing a horse to pull with the forehand, favoring leads and
diagonals, among other things.

Equine Environmental Disease - Vita Royal's Critically
Acclaimed Scientific Program Restores Health Naturally, Without Toxic Drugs
As featured in "Controlling EPM From The
Inside Out" in the July, 1999 issue of the HORSE JOURNAL, our
comprehensive program has now restored normal health to hundreds of horses
across North America without the use of drugs.
A Diagnosis of Equine Environmental Disease Is
Not a Death Sentence Any More!
Most of the horses we have dealt with are
"relapses" or failures of drug treatments of all sorts. Veterinarians
who call to inquire are just as frustrated as their clients, some of whom have
spent $5,000 -$8,000 on treatments since 1995, and who still don't have a
usable horse. Breeding is out of the question per recommendations of drug
manufacturers.

to try and help cut down on the number of riding injuries.
From September the BETA 1995 Standard will
officially cease to be a valid standard for the manufacture of body
protectors. |
The standard was replaced in March last year by
the BETA 2000 Standard and manufacturers were given until the end of August

Therapeutic Riding In The Piedmont, NC
In the fall 2000 issue of the Review,

instructor and Director of HorseFeathers Therapeutic Riding, I talk to hundreds
of people each year about therapeutic riding in N.C. Therapeutic riding is also
known as equine facilitated therapy (EFT), especially when it pertains to
non-riding interaction with the horse.

Costa Rica Classic
Trip Report by Chrissa Pedersen
Dec 23 to 31 2001 |
|
If you want to see spectacular jungle and beach
scenery, meet local people, learn about herbal remedies, see lots of wildlife,
shop, kick back and relax and don't mind some long van rides on rough roads
then this trip IS for you.
Uvi Jenkins was our guide, interpreter, historical, environmental Costa Rican
lecturer and baby sitter from Conexiones the local company for Hidden Trails.
Uvi said her ancestry goes back to a crewmember on Captain Morgan's pirate ship
I felt an immediate connection to her forthright, straight talking manner. Her
co-worker was Brian, our driver. He managed to get our luggage and us from the
Caribbean to Pacific sides of this Central American country. No small feat
given the volcanic mountains that define this country's character. Uvi by the
way was the best, most personable riding guide that we have had to date.
Extremely organized and very patient with her charges, not to mention her
English was excellent.

New Amateur Association
For the Good of the Breed: American
Amateur Arabian Horse Association Seeing a common need for the amateur owners
of Arabian horses to form a separate association for the promotion of the
Arabian horse as a family recreational mount, a group of Arabian horse owners,
breeders and amateur trainers came together in Nashville Tennessee in late
April of this year to discuss what action they could take to meet the needs of
Arabian owners like themselves. The result was the formation of a national
association for the encouragement of Amateur activities and entry level
opportunities for beginning and long time Arabian horse owners.
Enthusiastically named "The American Amateur Arabian Horse
Association" by the nine attendees from allacross the country, The goal of
the group is to help family recreational riders of Arabian horses get together,
learn, and enjoy the Arabian horse in low cost, low key shows and events.

Equine Intensive and Critical Care Services at LSU: An Inside
Look
Equine emergency and critical care is a growing
facet of veterinary medicine with more and more horses requiring specialized,
immediate, and advanced veterinary care. The intensity of emergency care
required is dependent upon the underlying disease and any accompanying
abnormalities, and services may often range from body temperature control to
emergency surgical intervention. With the diagnostic and therapeutic advances
made in recent years in equine medicine and surgery, emergency and critical
care can play a major role in the successful treatment and rehabilitation of
horses faced with performance-limiting and life-threatening conditions or
diseases.
This is especially true at the LSU School of
Veterinary Medicine where the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Equine Clinic
identifies 20-25 percent of its patients as emergency cases. Internists,
surgeons, theriogenologists, ophthalmologists, and numerous other specialists,
technicians, and students join efforts daily to save and sustain critically ill
equine patients.

To A Safe Stop,
By Permission of Karen
Boush
Western Horseman, September 1998
Frank Bell's training program
culminates in a graceful, yet quite practical, one-rein stop.
When horse gentler Frank Bell performs a one-rein stop, he guides his equine
partner through an elegant, free-flowing movement that involves
solidcommunication and harmony |
According to Bell, teaching a horse 'ballet,' as
he calls the final segment of his seven-step training system, elevates safety
to an art. Two simple maneuvers - a one-rein stop followed by a turn on the
haunches - give riders the means to disengage the hindquarters in dangerous
situations as well as teach the horse proper foot placement and weight
shifting. Ultimately, once the steps have been learned and the moves polished,
horse and rider are in sync both physically and mentally. When the hindquarters
are properly disengaged the horse cannot run off or rear.

The Sawyer Creek Foal Cam Success
Oh my...where do I start...well, it
all started with my son's idea of building us a web page, which blossomed and
expanded until we had a live foal cam. From the live foal cam and message board
we built a huge world wide following, from England, Australia, New
Zealand...literally every corner of the earth and all parts of the US.
We had 12 foals born on our live cam...not only was this fantastic for us
because of the audience we sold many foals before they were even born but
fantastic for the viewers who enjoyed the births. Two newpapers even did quite
nice feature articles on us and our unique marketing approach of the live foal
cam. They built up quite a little club calling themselves "Creekies"
after the name of our farm Sawyer Creek. To date we have over 420,000 hits from
which my server says over 200,000 are unique! Then even after the foals were
born, they continued to watch and participate on the message board site...which
they still do!
