The
rare black Irish Draught stallion, Corrcullen
The
rare black Irish Draught stallion, Corrcullen, continues
to show proof of his great athletic ability and versatility,
having additional eventing and dressage successes in 2002.
Ridden by Carol Kozlowski at the prestigious Stuart Horse
Trial and One Star in 2002, he had the third best score
HC (Hors Concours) at Training Level and was placed second
at Genesee Valley Hunt Horse Trial. Both finishes were on
his dressage scores without jumping or time penalties. At
his first ever dressage test, he had firsts in each class
entered, at Training and First Level, at the WYNDA Fall
Finale and Championship Dressage test this year. At present,
he is schooling second and third level movements.
Kozlowski
who has had an outstanding eventing career and rode Erin
Go Bragh, the famous Connemarra eventing stallion has enjoyed
working with Cully another Irish horse. She finds that he
has a great temperament, athletic ability and versatility.
During the eventing season, for additional experience she
suggested that he enter the Western New York Dressage Association
Fall Finale. Competing against some of the best dressage
horses and riders in central and western New York he was

Half-Arabian
Wins Percheron World Congress Crossbred Halter Championship
Robin
Mountjoy knew that her Arabian/Percheron gelding,
AGF Shamrock Bey, was a superb example of what a Half-Arabian
sport horse gelding should look like. After all he
won all seven in-hand classes he entered in the last
two years and was Half-Arabian Sport Horse Gelding
Reserve Champion last July at the International Arabian
Horse Association® (IAHA®) Region 15 Show.
But even Mountjoy was surprised at his latest victory.
On October 26, 2002, she showed the 16.1-hand gelding
to a championship at the Percheron World Congress
in its first-ever Crossbred Halter 3 Years and Over
Championship in a class of 18 mares, geldings and
stallions.
|
"Most
of the horses were Percheron/Thoroughbred crosses with a
number of Paint and Quarter horse crosses," says Mountjoy,
who lives in Richmond, Virginia. "He was the only Percheron/Arabian
cross that I knew of there."
To
be eligible, horses had to be at least Half-Percheron although
according to Mountjoy, the prize list stressed that they
were looking for horses with characteristics of a Warmblood.

Establishing
a Proper Relationship with Equine
Part I: The Basics by Rick Harper |
The
concept of establishing a relationship with equine is
becoming a common theme among equine enthusiasts and professionals.
The word relationship is appearing in respect
to training methodology around the world. So far, most
of the emphasis on defining a proper relationship with
equine concentrates on the knowledge we now have of equine
behavior, specifically as it relates to the social structure
and characteristics of equine in a herd environment. This,
of course, is not all bad. The question is, can the relationship
between man and equine be improved by defining the relationship
in terms that go beyond the behavioral study of how equine
relate among themselves? Should the relationship between
equine and man be a study in and of itself? We should
find a word for this study; maybe we could call it HORSEMANSHIP.
So, let us start by defining horsemanship. You know, now
that we look at it in this respect, there was a book written
around 400 BC about horsemanship.

Derby
House Develop New Mobile Field Shelter
DERBY
House has developed a new top of the range mobile field
shelter.
The mobile field shelter can be moved around the field
using a 4x4 vehicle or when conditions get tough a tractor.
This helps to stop fields and paddocks becoming a sea
of mud in certain areas. |
Built from Scandinavian Red Wood, the mobile field shelter
is constructed on a metal sub frame with skids so you can
place it where you want. As it's mobile a costly concrete
base isn't needed and planning permission is not usually
necessary.
The Derby House Mobile Field Shelter can be made to any
size you want and an overhanging canopy helps prevent rain
entering the building through the doorway keeping your horse
snug and dry.

BD
Introduce New Championships
British
Dressage is launching major new Championships in 2003
for young horses, ponies, mares and stallions. The
British Dressage Young Horse and Breeding Championships
will be held over two days, 19th - 20th July 2003,
at Addington Equestrian Centre and is open to all
competitors, whether or not they are BD members.
|
The
innovative Championships will feature ridden classes for
4, 5,and 6 year olds, ridden classes for young ponies, in
hand classes and an open freestyle to music class for stallions.
The Championships have been developed along the lines of
the German Bundeschampionat and will emphasise the importance
of breeding by generating awareness and interest in British
bred horses.
Commenting
on the idea behind the event BD Chairman, Desi Dillingham
said: " History has proved that the countries which
excel in dressage have their own successful breeding programmes,
and that is what we are encouraging. In the UK we have stallions,
mares and youngstock easily good enough to hold their own
in a worldwide market and we are keen to build on this."

BEF
Backs BOA Bid
The
British Equestrian Federation is fully in favour of
the proposed bid by the British Olympic Association
for the 2012 Olympic Games to be held in London.
Representatives
from the BEF visited the site of one of the BOA's
potential equestrian Olympic venues, the Royal Veterinary
College at Potters Bar, at the BOA's invitation two
years ago. The BEF team met Professor Lance Lanyon,
Principal of the RVC, and assessed the outline potential
of the site to meet the needs of the equestrian Olympic
sports. Mike Tucker, who subsequently designed the
Eventing cross country for the Jerez 2002 World Equestrian
Games, accompanied the BEF delegation as a professional
advisor.
|
Philip
Billington, Chairman of BEF, said: "Our initial observation
indicates that the Potters Bar site offers good potential
to accommodate the equestrian sports, a key ingredient is
the ideal distance to the potential Olympic site being under
30 minutes. Once a decision to bid has been made there is
much more work to be done, including over the venue, with
full consultation between BOA, BEF and its members, and
UK Sport."

Vet's
Exam Success Points Way To Higher Equine Dental Standards
The
first and only British veterinary surgeon to pass the prestigious
Equine Dental Technicians (EDT) examination has highlighted
a growing problem among horse owners of engaging the services
of " cowboy" equine dental technicians who are
not properly qualified.
Christopher
Pearce, a partner in the five-vet Barn Equine Surgery, in
Three Legged Cross, Wimborne, Dorset, has passed the EDT
examination, recently set up and run jointly by the British
Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA) and the British Association
of Equine Dental Technicians (BAEDT). He is the only vet
in the UK to have passed the exam and be admitted to membership
of the BAEDT.
The
examination was set up to promote the highest standards
in equine dentistry, following increasing concerns about
the emergence of so-called "equine dentists" -
lay people who rasp horses' teeth for a living - but who
often have received only minimal training or none at all.
Some of these equine dental technicians have received training
by a self-regulating organisation in the USA, which is not
recognised in the UK.
Although
vets have traditionally rasped the teeth of horses while
visiting clients for other purposes, recent advances in
equipment and techniques, together with increased awareness
among horse owners about the importance of dental health,
has resulted in the emergence of these so-called equine
dentists.

Class Sport Horses Make Their Way To Highlife Farms
Orlando,
FL - December 2002 - Today, Highlife Farms owners Kenny
and Joan Sims announced the arrival of several sport horses
including Pilox, from Europe. Among several other influential
horses, Pilox will be making Highlife Farms in Central Florida
his new home.
Mention
the unmistakable name Pilox, and everyone knows who your
talking about. His lineage speaks for itself. His sire,
Pilot, the Westphalian stallion started an incomparable
career in his day as a procreator of showjumpers and was
the youngest progeny winnings millionaire of German stallions.
The dam Anja was awarded with the Westphalian Breeder's
Association premium and was show winner a number of times.
Pilox's
performance record is impeccable. He dominated his stallion
performance test in Warendorf in 1994, with way above average
scores in the forefront of his age-class. Following wins
in show jumper competitions, he had success at Federal Championship
level in show jumping and was also victorious in the advanced
class. Highlife Farms, Orlando is very proud and honored

select number of breeding requests will be accepted for

Saddletech
Wins "Killer Application" Web Award
Woodside,
CA: Inc. Magazine, deemed the small business bible
by the New York Times, has awarded its 2002 Web Award for
Killer Application to SADDLETECH.com, owned
by inventor Robert Ferrand. The website provides comprehensive
information about saddle fitting, including scientific research,
educational video and saddle fitting solutions. A variety
of scientific instruments that eliminate the mystery of
saddle fitting are featured on the website.
Saddle
Fitting is an issue for all horsemen, regardless of
skill or discipline. Ill-fitting saddles can create lameness,
soreness, impaired performance, behavioral problems, and
a variety of health issues for the horse. In his quest to
solve saddle fitting problems, Ferrand boldly decided to
approach the age-old problem with the scientific method.
Saddletech
entered the equine market in 1992 with the invention of
the patented Saddletech Computer Saddle Fitting System,
adapted from medical technology Ferrand originally invented
to prevent pressure sores on humans. Creation of the patented
Saddletech Gauge followed in 1996, providing a three-dimensional
measurement of the arcs and angles of a horses back,
which includes a secret formula to compensate
for the effect of the weight of the rider. Saddles are measured
three-dimensionally with the Saddletech Sizing Stand, invented
in 1997; this information is the basis for generating Saddletechs
measured saddle database. In 1999, the Saddletech
Adjustable Jig was developed to produce Western saddle bars
to Saddletech measurements. In 2001, Ferrand developed a
method to create custom-molded thermoplastic saddle orthotics
based on Saddletech measurements of the horses back.
These sculpted devices fit between the saddle and the horse,
allowing most saddles to then properly fit, protecting the
horse from injury.
