BHS Access Week 2001
- highlighting the need for safer off road riding |
Plans are in hand to mark the British Horse
Society's ACCESS Week 2001 - 19-27 May. Because of the restriction of riding on
bridleways, the week will concentrate on the BHS presenting awards to local
authorities and landowners who have addressed the need of riders.
The aim of BHS Access Week is to highlight the need for more off road riding
for horse riders and carriage drivers. Today's roads are too busy, and today's
drivers too impatient, to enable riders to use the roads safely. There are an
estimated 3000 accidents involving horses on the roads every year, and the BHS
is campaigning for measures to reduce that number.

THE CLEVELAND BAY
The Cleveland Bay - A British horse with a history and a future! The Cleveland
Bay is the only British clean legged breed of horse and originally bred in the
Cleveland area of the North Riding of Yorkshire. It is noted for stamina and
even temperament and was originally used as a pack horse to carry the coal,
iron ore and alum from the moors down to the coast. The return journey would be
of salt, fish or whatever could be sold. The 'Chapmen', as these merchants were
called, used the local clean legged short coupled horses which were hardy and
sure footed.
The breed's potential has been recognised for many years by horsemen throughout
the world and many have been exported to far distant lands including Australia,
New Zealand, America, South Africa and Japan to improve their native stock. The
Royal Stud of Japan has used the Cleveland Bay for many years to produce their
carriage horses. Today's Cleveland is the ideal cross for producing hunters and
competition horses for every sphere.

Spanish Mustangs: Past, Present,
Future, Perfect
When the Conquistadors arrived in the Americas
they brought with them some of Spains finest horses. They also brought some of
the toughest horses the world has ever produced. You all know the story: The
horses spread throughout the land through theft, gift and their own cunning. By
the late 1800s hundreds of thousands of these horses still roamed free, or in
Indian herds. Some isolated herds still as pure as the horses they descended
from. |
|
However, the Government made a practice of
shooting herd stallions and then introducing domestic Thoroughbred, Morgan or
Draft stallions to improve these herds. Horses confiscated from Indian tribes
were often shot or infused with other domestic herds. The number of pure horses
left quickly dwindled. The Spanish Mustang was in danger of losing its unique
qualities to an equine melting pot.
These are the historic horses who won the west: Mounts of Native Americans,
Lewis and Clark, Mexican Banditos, the Pony Express and countless others who
depended on their strong back and hardy nature. The original Nez Perce
Appaloosa was a Spanish Mustang, and the Quarter Horse got his cow sense from
this remarkable breed whose courage was born in the bullrings of Spain. The
Spanish Mustang had lost none of this legendary brio; the Spanish horse left a
legacy in the tough, beautiful and hardy descendant who now called America
home. They were now on the brink of extinction
