Above All Else @ Windsong
Jim and Sue Doll,
owners of Windsong Arabians in Mt. Airy, Maryland, built a house for
their daughter on their farm. Now their daughter has married and the
newly weds bought a house of their own. It was Jim's idea to turn
the 4 bedroom, 3 bath cape cod into a vacation rental for horse travelers.
Above All Else @ Windsong has been fully furnished, thanks to friends
and family, and now is a vacation get-a-way for anyone who wishes
to savor life on a Maryland horse farm. For horse travelers, a corral
is included in the rental, suitable for up to 4 compatible horses.
Stall board on the farm, depending on availability, can be arranged
for a nominal fee.

Western
Pleasure Riding
One of
the most popular classes within the spectrum of western riding
is the western pleasure class. It is a typical class for beginners
to the show ring to acquire experience and control over themselves
in a show scenario. In contrast to events like reining, western
riding, trail, and others, in a pleasure class the contestant
is not alone in the show ring. He/she can "hide"
among a group of other competitors and is not judged individually.
Of course, hiding among fellow competitors isn't what western
pleasure is all about, but for the novice show rider it usually
helps enormously not to be the only one under scrutiny and
not to feel the eyes of all the spectators focussing in on
him.
|
In a pleasure class,
one can get used to being in the show pen. To be sure, winning a western
pleasure class is NOT easier than winning any other class! In order
to win or do well in a pleasure class, one needs to stand out in the
crowd - which is the more difficult the more riders compete in the
class.
Being competitive
in a western pleasure class necessitates knowing what the judge is
looking for - and being able to present your horse in that way. What
is the judge looking for?

Three Pronged Promotion
Strategy
Let's take a look
at some common horse business marketing perceptions:
1) I tried advertising once, but it didn't work.
2) I don't need to advertise - I rely on word of mouth.
3) Marketing and advertising are the same thing.
4) I can't afford a marketing plan and don't have a marketing budget.
Marketing...advertising..budgeting..planning...
It's true that marketing is a broad topic. It can make any horse business
owner dizzy to try to figure out how to get started. By building a
fundamental understanding of marketing, you will take the first step
to winding your way through this multi-faceted maze of options and
opportunities. Formulating a three pronged promotion strategy is a
good first step, and will form the backbone for any marketing you
do.
