Training Mythunderstandings Aids
Versus Cues
There's a lot of talk about aids and cues in the
horse world and a lot of it just confuses people. One trainer talks about using
your legs as aids and another one tells you to cue your horse with your leg.
Neither one probably knows what he's talking about. So it's no wonder horses
get confused. |
Horses don't care what a trainer calls the things
he or she does, they just need to understand them in a horse logical way. As a
training method, heeding uses methodically applied directional pressures to
create shapes. Pressures that create shapes are called aids. Once the horse
understands what shape you want when you apply a particular pressure, you can
associate a cue or signal with that shape. So now you can use that cue to tell
the horse exactly when you want him to give you the shape. You teach with aids.
You ask with cues.

Report of The First International Conference on Laminitis and
Diseases of the Foot.
Laminitis is a complex disease of the horse,
manifesting changes in the cardiovascular, endocrine, musculo-skeletal, and
gastrointestinal systems of the affected animal, as well as agonizing lameness
and obvious distress of extreme pain in the hooves. Dr. David Hood, Faculty at
this conference, noted, "Laminitis is the NUMBER ONE ranked medical
concern of horse-owners, even though it is NOT the most prevalent disease in
horses. The reason for this concern is that this disease rarely kills an
animal, but leaves it to suffer for extended periods, unable to place the load
of its own weight on the hooves without the accompaniment of severe pain."
The fear that ones own horse might be permanently crippled by this
disease, and that we currently have no preventative or effective rehabilitation
for affected animals, further amplifies this fear.

The International Quarter Pony.
The International Quarter Pony is a vastly popular
and growing breed, as the International Quarter Pony appeal is, truly
international. The IQPA was instituted to provide and promote a correct,
well-balanced, sound pony with quarter horse conformation and enough body,
speed, and eye appeal to sufficiently compete with larger breeds as well as
other ponies.
The International Quarter Pony is perfectly suited
for riders who are too small to handle, or who simply don't wish |
to handle, a big 15h or 16h horse. Quarter ponies
are often the first choice for a child's mount due to their calm dispositions
and even temperaments combined with their compact size.

Mary Lisa Nicholson-Leffler and Kick

OCALA, FLORIDA (February 25, 2001)-Mary Lisa
Nicholson-Leffler, 33, of Brookville, Maryland, riding Kick the Clouds won the
$50,000 HITS Grand Prix at the Ocala Masters horse show in Florida today--the
featured event of Week III at the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit. Nicholson-Leffler
bested a field of 44 on a course designed by Buddy Brown of Wellington,
Florida. She also placed ninth with Graf Rossini S owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce
Chovnick. Kick the Clouds, owned by Nicholson-Leffler and her parents, earned
$15,000 for Mr. and Mrs. Nicholson's Rolling Acres Farm. "I've been
knocking on the door in the Grand Prix with both of them," said
Nicholson-Leffler, who is competing at Ocala all five weeks. "Each time
we've had four faults. I had the fastest time of the four-faulters last week.
Mr. Brown's courses have been very technical all week--not huge, but very
technical, and not many riders went clean. Today's course was very technical
but 12 went clean. There were a lot of good turns and running--the key was to
just keep it together."

Ray Texel and Fleur Win $50,000 Rio
Vista Grand Prix At Indio Desert Circuit and Move Up in World Cup
Standings |
INDIO, CA (February 25, 2001)--Ray Texel, 28, of
Malibu, California, riding the 9-year-old Holsteiner mare Fleur, was the only
rider in a field of 32 to jump double-clear today at the Indio Desert Circuit
in California, clinching the win in the $50,000 Rio Vista Grand Prix and moving
him from third to second in the West Coast League World Cup Standings. "I
really believed in Fleur today and decided to give her some trust even though
it was a real risky class for me," said Texel. "She's an intelligent
horse, she's a fighter, and I think that these last couple of Grand Prix jump
offs, she's learned from little mistakes we've been having. I decided today to
challenge it and she came through for me. This is really what a partnership is
about--working together with this animal. I gave her the best chance to go
clear today, but I also think she really helped me out as well--when we came
back for that jump off she helped figure things out from the other days. I
believe that this weekend is one year exactly that we've been together. This is
a wonderful anniversary. I'm going to have a drink for her tonight." Texel
took home the blue ribbon, an engraved silver tray, an embroidered cooler, and
$15,000 for owner Beverly Hills Equestrian Park.

The best laid plans
. can go
astray and still lead to a silver medal |
In the highly controlled world of top class show
jumping breeding, most successful stallions are much wanted foals that are
carefully nurtured from birth to prepare them for a seamless career of top
grading success and a full active life combining busy stud duties with an
increasingly demanding programme of international competition. However, this
was certainly not the case for the fully approved Danish Warmblood stallion
Lando by Lancier who helped his Dutch rider Albert Voorn to win
the individual silver medal at the Sydney Olympics. Why this was, and how Lando
overcame the problems of a somewhat contentious start to his life make a
fascinating story, and one that should inspire hope amongst breeders
everywhere.

Eriskay Pony Society to Host Judge

Training Mythunderstandings The
Importance of Directing Every Stride
When you first start training a horse, everything
is about getting his attention. Once you've got his attention, you start
directing his attention where you want it to go. To get the horse to pay
attention to you, however, you first have to pay attention to the horse.
|
We call our basic groundwork lessons
"heeding." It's a play on words. To an observer, it looks like the
handler is moving the horse around like a dog at heel. Or you can think of it
as the horse heeding-- meaning, paying attention to--to his handler. Either
way, it's a pretty picture.
When we heed a horse, we let the lead rope loop down below the handler's hand.
It's just there. It's not directing the horse. Sometimes I have students hook a
thumb into their belt so they aren't tempted to use the lead rope to direct the
horse. When most people lead a horse, they choke up on the rope and drag or
push the horse's head in whatever direction they want the rest of him to go. Or
if that doesn't work, they pull on him or jerk the lead shank or something else
that creates some activity. They are working under the mythunderstanding that
causing an action is the same thing as training the horse.

Tracy Fenney and Grace Win $25,000
Ariat Grand Prix at Indio Desert Circuit IV
INDIO, CA (February 23, 2001)--Tracy Fenney, 36,
of Flower Mound, Texas, riding Grace won the $25,000 Ariat Grand Prix at the
Indio Desert Circuit in California today, besting a field of 47 on a course
designed by Danny Foster. |
Three riders were clean in the Jump-Off but
Fenney was almost two seconds faster than her closest competitors--Mary Tyng on
Baccarat and Will Simpson on El Campeon's Cayenne, who placed second and third
respectively by fractions. Fenney said that when she walked the course she
almost scratched. "I thought it was very technical and very hard. I didn't
want to get Grace in any jams with this Sunday coming up. I thought, 'Should we
take her or not?' Nothing bothers her so I figured it would be fine. She jumped
it easy. When I ride that mare, she makes me feel like I can do whatever and go
to the jumps." Fenney's win earned $7,500 for Grace's owner Hidden Lake
Farm. The $25,000 Ariat Grand Prix was taped by JCR Sports Productions of
Foothill Ranch, California, and will be televised next month.
