The Art of Treating Equine Joint Disease: new surgical
technique saves horses
With the emphasis on healthier and more active
lifestyles, competitive sports are attracting people well into their later
years. Horse owners are expecting the same of their mounts. Many hard working
hunt, dressage, and three-day event horses can be highly competitive in their
late teens and early twenties. Injuries, however, are a fact of life for both
people and horses. This is particularly true for those involved in competitive
sports. Often these injuries occur early in life and are career-limiting. Now,
with specialized mosaic arthroplasty techniques, the rehabilitation of many
competitive horses with previously untreatable joint injuries is possible.
Joint injuries are a major cause of economic loss in the horse industry. Even a
small cartilage injury in a critical spot can end a successful career. While
the knee is the most problematic site for the human runner, injuries in the
equine carpal (knee) and fetlock joints in the front limb are limiting for the
horse. Cartilage in these high motion joints does not heal in adult horses.
Medications in the glucosamine sulfate, non-steriodal anti-inflammatory and
hyaluronate families are ineffective treatments for the kind of cartilage and
bone injury that we often see in competitive horses.

Paint Horse make strong showings at
nation's top reining competition
Gunner wins showdown at USET Festival of Champions |
FORT WORTH-An American Paint Horse named Colonels
Smokingun, "Gunner," aimed to outdraw the competition at the $100,000
United States Equestrian Team (USET) Opening Reining Championship in Galdstone,
N.J., June 26, and didn't disappoint the crowd of 5,000 people who turned out
for the showdown.
(APHA photo by Ross Hecox) |
The
American Paint Horse won the Championship by a wide margin, with a two-round
composite score of 448.5-nine points ahead of the second-place competitor. A
team of five judges awarded the points.
Gunner's totals were considered exceptionally
high. In fact, the 8-year-old sorrel overo stallion went into the competition
with the highest USET reining score in history -a 233 in the semi-finals at
Oklahoma City, Okla. Ridden by Bryant Pace and owned by Kim and Debra Sloan,
all of Newfoundland, N. J., Gunner has proven to be a master at the sport,
earning more than $160,000 over his career.
"He's all start and he's all stop," said Kim Sloan, emphasizing that
Gunner is cool under pressure and never wastes energy.

A Horse, of Course with Don Blazer
Brown Jack was laid back!
Thats why hes one of historys
horses.
Sure, Brown Jack could run. He began his racing
career jumping fences. He even held the title of champion hurdler of England.
But that isnt why hes remembered. |
|
He ran on the flat, too. For him it was a second
career, and he set the unequaled record of winning the Alexandra Stakes at
Ascot six successive years.
But that isnt why hes remembered.
Hes remembered because he had
"style."
When you got "style" youve got
that unique something no one can forget.

Training Mythunderstandings -
Why Good Training Starts on the Ground
by Ron Meredith President, Meredith Manor
International Equestrian Centre |
When some students first arrive here at Meredith
Manor they don't see the point of the ground work we call "heeding."
Moving their horses around on the ground doesn't seem very exciting. They're
impatient to get in the saddle and start riding. They might jabber something
about "respect" or herd hierarchy or some other mumbo jumbo if I
pushed them to come up with a reason why the ground work was important. But
they really don't see much connection between how they, say, lead their horse
from the barn to the arena and how they ask that horse to canter.
The horse experiences everything you do when you're with him as a positive or
negative feeling. Positive feelings or experiences are non-stressful and keep
the horse relaxed. Negative experiences are stressful, raise the horse's
excitement level and make the horse tense. A horse must be relaxed before he
can pay attention and learn. The horse that's tense is just looking for a way
to get out of Dodge. And if he can't find one, he'll either blow or he'll shut
down, depending on his inclination. There's no learning in going on with either
one.

BHS TREC 2001
The British Horse Society TREC is the most
exciting new equestrian competition to reach the UK in decades. It has
attracted hundreds of competitors in the three years it has been running so far
because it appeals to the 'ordinary' rider who is looking for fun, not
medals. |
BHS TREC is a three-phase event. Phase One
consists of orienteering on horseback, where riders follow a route on a map at
pre-determined speeds. Phase Two tests control of paces, and Phase Three can be
up to 5km long. This part of the competition involves the skills and hazards
that any rider might encounter out hacking: mounting and dismounting, going
through water, under low hanging trees, opening gates, traversing narrow paths,
going over bridges, jumping fallen logs and so on. It is completely in tune
with the BHS objectives to help riders improve their skills to make riding in
the countryside safer and more enjoyable.
