Equine
Students Bid To Win Prestigous Award
Now in its fourth year, the Royal Agricultural Society
of England initiated award, The Eqvalan Thesis of the
Year Award is designed to reward academic excellence
within colleges offering equine degree courses. Fifteen
top institutions put forward their best equine student
to be considered.
The award's five finalists will give a fifteen-minute
presentation to a panel of eminent equine industry judges
at the British Equine Event and undergo an in-depth
question and answer session. This year's Eqvalan thesis
winner will be presented with their prize at a private
ceremony during the weekend. |
The
Eqvalan final will be take place independently from the
main events at this year's twelfth British Equine Event,
which itself features a packed two-day demonstration programme.
Top equestrians such as Conrad Schumacher, Vere & Clea
Phillipps and Andy Austin will be giving informative lecture-demos
on how to get the best out of your horse. Top vets and farriers

- A National database to improve the quality of life

HorseMates!
Has been formed in order to create a National database of
horse and pony details, primarily to help stop abuse of
horses and ponies by unscrupulous individuals, but also
to allow people to find out what happened to horses and
ponies that have moved on to pastures new.
There
have been many stories of horses or ponies being sold to
people because they look as though they would be suited
to a particular task, when in truth there are medical or
psychological reasons why the animal can not perform the
task. A friend of ours purchased a young, healthy looking
thoroughbred horse from a respectable individual, with a
view to doing a little jumping when the horse and rider
became better acquainted. After only a little light exercise,
the poor horse was really showing signs of distress. The
vet was called and upon further investigation the horse
was diagnosed with a serious heart condition and a much
shortened life expectancy. Our friend decided to keep the
horse as a companion for their old pony, however, not all
horses or ponies are that lucky! You could say that our
friend should have used a vet before the purchase, but people
don't always do the right thing when they are buying a horse
or pony, especially if the seller seems to be a genuine
person.

To
Report or Not to Report. Is that the Question?

on Equine neglect and abuse issues.
Overview:
The
relationship between Veterinarian and "Patient"
is unique in more ways than one might think. Recognizing
that we are looking at this relationship as it pertains
to the reporting and/or investigation of alleged neglect
and abuse, there are some key elements to consider.
|
When
we look at human victims of rape, assault, neglect or other
forms of abuse there are, more often than not, people who
can give first or second hand accounts of the events leading
up to or surrounding the act. Whereas in the case of animal
abuse or neglect, unless someone has witnessed the act and
reports it to the authorities, the victim can never verbalize
what actually transpired. More often than not this means
that unless the owner of the animal or a witness reports
the crime, it will never be discovered. No starving horse,
no abused dog, no tortured cat has ever picked up the phone
and asked for help. There must be, in each and every case,
a person who steps forward to advocate for the animal. And
since owners are often the ones inflicting the neglect or
abuse and witnesses only observe a fraction of the actual
cases this places the Veterinarian in a very unique posture.
The Veterinarian might well be the only hope, the last line
of defense for a creature that cannot speak for itself.
Law
Enforcement Agencies and Physicians have struggled with
the issue of Doctor -Patient confidentiality on such issues
as rape, incest, child neglect and family matters for decades.
Only during recent times have roles and responsibilities
become more clearly defined. Still, there remains broad
latitude and interpretation of reporting laws from state
to state and between the US and Canada.

Darren
Chiacchia Takes Eventing Lead After Dressage at Fair Hill
International
Fred Merriam Leads USA National Single Horse Driving Championship
FAIR
HILL, MD—October 25, 2002—Darren Chicchia of Springville,
NY moved into the lead of the U.S. Equestrian Team (USET)
Fall Eventing Championship ollowing the completion of the
dressage phase at the Fair Hill International.
In
the USA National Single Horse Driving Championship, Fred
Merriam of Newfane, VT, individual Bronze Medalist at the
2002 World Singles Driving Championship, completed the dressage
phase in first place.
Chiacchia
moved ahead of Sydney Olympic Gold Medalist David O’Connor
of The Plains, VA when he received a dressage score of 36.80
penalties on Windfall, a 10-year-old, black stallion owned
by Dr. Timothy Holekamp. O’Connor, who led after Thursday’s
opening round, now stands second with his score of 37.01
penalties on his Olympic Gold Medal mount, Custom Made,
a 17-year-old Thoroughbred owned by Xandarius LLC. O’Connor
also stands third on Texas Pride, a 10-year-old Thoroughbred
owned by Claud Schoch of Bethesda, MD, with a score of 40.20.
“This
is my second year together with Windfall and things are
going very well,” said Chiacchia. “The first year
with a horse is often a case of getting to know each other
and we’ve gotten to the point where we have a real
cooperation out on the course. This, of course, is doubly
important when you’re dealing with a stallion.”
O’Connor
has announced that this year’s Fair Hill International
is Custom Made’s final competition and O’Connor
is hoping that he can repeat the dramatic farewell appearance
of one of his earlier successful mounts, Wilton Fair, whom
O’Connor rode to the Fair Hill Championship in the
horse’s final appearance in 1993.

Hippus
Bits
The
Hippus bit was originally designed by Leith Ryan,
an equine dentist, to provide a kinder bit for horses.
Leith undertook some extensive research with Dr.
Deb Bennet Ph.D., a world renowned expert in horse
conformation, to enable him to design a bit with
the ideal shape and action for the horse.

The
Hippus bits are a major step forward in horse care. The
design is radically different to any other bits available,
and the concept is based upon placing the horse first
and then the rider gaining the benefits. There is no pinch,
no pain, no constant tongue and palate pressure; it allows
the horse more freedom to balance itself, it aids better
respiration and generally improves the quality of life
for your horse.
Leith
began manufacturing and offering these bits to his customers
in Switzerland. The kind action of these bits allowed
them to be used on horses with tender mouths or after
extensive dental work.
Soon
after vets in Germany, Switzerland and France began to
recommend the bits to customers as therapeutic bits for
their horses.
The
kind action of the bits had the by-product of horses being
prepared to offer more as they were feeling more comfortable
when ridden or driven.

All
Breeds Equine Emporium
“The
equine industry has grown so dramatically over the
years,” says Can-Am Equine Marketing Inc. President
Paul Maguire, “that it boasts over 300,000 horses
of various diciplines at over 50,000 farms in Ontario.
One of the biggest problems now facing the industry
is that most horse hobby farmers don’t have animal
husbandry background and are striving to get information
on current equine issues.”
Equine enthusiasts will gain access to all the information
they require - and more - by attending Can-Am’s
All Breeds Equine Emporium at London’s Western
Fair Raceway running March 13 through 16, 2003. Over
the four days there will be 260 presentations, with
90 guest speakers from across North America covering
topics ranging from West Nile Virus, EPM, worming
practices, nutrition and so on. Attendees can take
part in round table discussions, seminars, video viewings,
as well as a Cocktail Reception on opening night and

this event is noted author, speaker, horseman and creator
of Relationship TrainingTM GaWaNi Pony Boy. Pony, of Cherokee
ancestry, is an authority on Native American HorsemanshipR
and an innovative educator in Native American history.
Pony’s approach to horse training is grounded in the
“old ways” of the many elders of different tribal
backgrounds he has consulted over the years. Native Americans
lived within their environment, looking at things as they
are, which included working within the nature of the horse
rather than trying to make the horse conform to human standards.
“Because horses are both individuals and intelligent,”
says Pony, “it is imperative that we teach them within
their own intellectual boundaries.”

Equestrian Offers $50 Rebate To Competitions
USA
Equestrian recognized competitions can now earn a
$50 rebate by submitting their competition results
electronically, per an amendment to Article 1217.1,
which states:

"Each
USA Equestrian Recognized Competition must forward by mail
with proof of delivery full results, postmarked within 10
calendar days of the competition, indicating the winners,
a record of jumper money won, Hunter Increment Report (where
applicable), the names of all horses, riders and owners
and all corrections, changes and additions to the prize
list. Alternatively, full results may be submitted electronically
either via email or on disk to the USA Equestrian within
10 calendar days of the competition. Electronically submitted
results must meet the criteria as published by USA Equestrian,
in the Competition Calendar and the Competition Management
section of the website, in order to be considered acceptable.
For acceptable electronic results received, the Federation
will provide a $50 discount for the following year's date
application renewal..."

O’Connor Takes Eventing Lead On First Day at Fair Hill
International

Medalist David O’Connor of The Plains, VA holds the
lead half-way through the dressage phase of the U.S. Equestrian
Team (USET) Fall Eventing Championship at the Fair Hill
International.
O’Connor
took the lead in Thursday’s opening round when he received
a score of 37.01 penalties on his Gold Medal mount, Custom
Made, a 17-year-old Thoroughbred owned by Xandarius LLC.
O’Connor has announced that this year’s Fair Hill
International is Custom Made’s final competition and
O’Connor is hoping that he can repeat the dramatic
farewell appearance of one of his earlier successful mounts,
Wilton Fair, whom O’Connor rode to the Fair Hill Championship
in the horse’s final appearance in 1993.
“It
would be great to have the same thing happen with Custom
Made, but we’ve got a lot to do before that happens,”
said O’Connor who won last year’s USET Fall Championship
at Fair Hill on The Native. “We gave it a lot of thought
before deciding to compete him here, but we thought it would
be a real nice way to end his three-day career.”
Standing
second is Vicki Baker of Rougemont, NC who scored 41.40
on Reggae Mon, a 14-year-old Thoroughbred owned by the Baker
Family. Baker rode third in the morning and took an early
lead in the competition.

USA
Equestrian membership numbered 82,706 on October 21,
exceeding the total of 2001 membership and breaking
the previous record set in 2001. The total membership
for 2001 was 80,760, up from 77,441 in 2000 and 74,156
in 1999.

Appoints Executive Officer
The
BEF has developed a long-term strategy and progress
is such that an Executive Officer is needed to drive
further development. The Federation is delighted to
announce the appointment of Helen Huggett to this
new role, which was created with the help of UK Sport
who are funding it.

Helen
Huggett will be taking on a number of roles including managing
planning and reporting processes and implementing policies
to improve standards of administration, consultation and
communication within the Federation. She will provide direct
support for a number of member bodies, support the BEF's
commitment to the British Horse Industry Confederation and
a variety of working groups. A number of new initiatives
will be delivered by Helen including the volunteer programme
and Owners' Foundation.

Show Jumping Riders Off To A Good Start In The European
Indoor Circuit
|
Five
riders representing the United States participated at the
first European indoor show of the season at CSI-A Bremen
(GER), October 3 - 6. Clare Bronfman fared the best on Lord
William (Lord Caletto - Rocky, by Rousseau), her Westphalian
gelding, placing second in the Der Joker competition and
second in another class aboard her Selle Francais gelding,
Enchante (Kessel II). In the team trophy class the US team
finished 3rd behind Holland and Germany.

New
York State Draft Horse Club Holds Successful
Fall Sale
CORTLAND, NY, Oct 21, 2002-The New York Draft Horse Club
held its annual fall horse and equipment sale on Oct 3 and
4.
Many volunteers made the day go off without a hitch, said
Richard Menkins, interim NYSDHC president.
There were 118 horses consigned at the sale. The top horse
was a Belgian gelding consigned by Jim Emo of Canisteo,
NY, sold for $2,700. This year's sale had a quality selection
of tack. The sheet total for tack was $76,009.45. Commission
from tack grossed $6440.91.
This year's numbers reflect the positive direction being
taken by the NYSDHC within the past year. The popularity
of the draft horse in North America is also a key in the
success of the sale.
The club will hold its annual banquet on Nov 2 in Syracuse,
NY.

During USA Equestrian Annual Meeting
A
special session of the League of Agricultural and
Equine Centers will be held during USA Equestrian's
86th Annual Meeting and 7th Sports Summit to be held
January 15-19, 2003 at the Marriott Griffin Gate in
Lexington, Kentucky. The special session will be held
on Thursday, January 16, 2003, from 10:30 am to 12:30
pm.

Delegation Meets With The IOC
On
23 October 2002, an FEI delegation met with the IOC
President Jacques Rogge and the IOC Sports Director
Gilbert Felli and two members of the sports department
to present FEI's counterproposal to respond to the
Olympic Programme Commission's recommendation to exclude
Eventing from the Olympic programme. The FEI delegation
was composed of HRH The Infanta Doña Pilar
de Borbón (ESP), President, Freddy Serpieri
(GRE), 1st Vice President, Wayne Roycroft (AUS), President
of the Eventing Committee, Dr Bo Helander, Secretary
General and Catrin Norinder, Manager of the Eventing
& Olympic Department. The meeting was held in
a very open and constructive atmosphere.

Galway
Downs CCI* and CCI** National Championships
Some
of the best horses and riders in the United States and Canada
will be converging on Temecula, California for the Galway
Downs Three Day Event, November 1 - 3. Galway Downs is becoming
a national player on the Three Day Eventing scene. Event
Organizer Robert Kellerhouse is committed to producing high
quality events. "We have the only CCI** and CCI* on
the West Coast, and we are trying to create a place for
all levels of eventing riders."
Both
Jaguar and the Riverside Press Enterprise are title sponsors
of this years event. Both the CCI** and the CCI* are USA
Equestrian National Championship events. In addition, young
riders in the CCI** are competing for the Fritz Cup presented
to the National Young Rider Champion. A Junior Olympic title
will be awarded to the highest placed junior in the CCI**.
With
fifty plus entries in the CCI* and almost forty in the CCI**
spectators are assured keen competition. Over the course
of the event, $12,000 in prize money will be awarded. In
addition to horses and riders from throughout the western
United States, a handful of riders are making the trek from
various Canadian provinces, thus creating an international
flair.

Judges list from Madrid now available

Horse Judges Association
The Spanish Horse Judges Association was created to unite
all the Official Judges qualified by the 'Jefatura de Cría
Caballar of Spain', which is the governing authority of
the breed and the Stud-Book Registry, in order to manage
the interest of its members and to promote the knowledge
and study of the Pure Bred Spanish Horse. Our aim is the
continuing development of highly specialised Judges for
the Breed Shows, ensuring the true to type Spanish Horse
in conformation and movement.
We regularly conduct training and refresher courses, conferences
and talks, and all sorts of instructive events to support
Morfological Breed Shows and Spanish Horses We encourage
the knowledge and development of all areas within the Breed
Shows and the Pure Bred Spanish Horse.

Another
Successful U.S. Arabian Nationals Concludes In Louiseville
Over
2,000 horses battled for cash and prizes at the 36th
Annual U.S. National Arabian & Half-Arabian Championship
Horse Show held October 11-19, in Louisville, Kentucky.
More than 20 officials were needed for a full slate
of classes that demonstrated the versatility of the
Arabian Horse including dressage, hunter, jumper,
working cow horse, cutting, reining and trail as well
as the customary performance classes.

One of the exceptional classes of the show was the Arabian
Park class that named Apollopalooza as the unanimous champion
with Carmelle Rooker of Fenton, Michigan, in the irons for
Esprit Arabians. The unanimous reserve champion was Aequus+//,
with Bill Rodgers of Streetsboro, Ohio, for owners Circle
G Stables. The Varian owned three-year-old, Khantina Girl,
ridden by Bill Porcher, a 2001 USA Equestrian of Honor,
of Santa Ynez, California, defeated 43 others to win the
$30,000 Arabian Western Pleasure Futurity.

in 1903 by William C Irving (1866-1943), this spectacular
oil painting was inspired by the song Blaydon Races - now
considered as the Tyneside national anthem and is estimated
to fetch £40,000-60,000. It depicts various locals
and eccentrics in a carnival atmosphere, with a horse race
in the background and when it was exhibited in the window
of an art dealer's shop in Newcastle, it attracted the attentions
of such a large crowd that the police asked the manager
to draw the blinds!
The
fame of Blaydon Races, which was held on a circular course
on Kings' Meadow island in the middle of the River Tyne,
rests chiefly on the song written by Geordie Ridley - a
Tyneside music hall singer. The race was an old fixture,
but not recorded in the racing calendar, until 1864. In
1862 - the year of the song - the race was called off when
a heavy storm made it impossible for the horses to get to
the racecourse. The last Blaydon Race was held on the September
2, 1916, during World War One and was abandoned when a riot
broke out following the disqualification of a winning horse.

Skelton and Arko continued their meteoric rise by
landing the top spot in the recent Olympia Qualifier
at Addington Manor Equestrian Centre (18th –
20th October 2002).
The
Olympia Qualifier gives three riders a chance to qualify
to compete for the week at the 31st running of the
Olympia International Show Jumping Championships (19th-23rd
December), one of Europe’s most popular show
jumping shows. Keith Shore on It’s Magic Max
and Ellen Whitaker on Kanselier took the other two
golden tickets.

Kanavy Wins USET Endurance 100-Mile Championship
Gladstone,
New Jersey—October 22, 2002—Two-time World
Endurance Champion Valerie Kanavy, who has previously
won the USET Endurance 50-Mile and 75-Mile Championships,
won the first USET Endurance 100-Mile Championship
held October 19 at the Fair Hill Natural Resources
Area in Fair Hill, MD.
Kanavy, of Fort Valley, VA, rode Bells Snitzel to
a ride time of 11 hours and 29 minutes to top a field
of 18 starters. Placing second was USET veteran three-day
event rider and combined driver Lana Wright of Warwick,
MD, who finished in 12 hours, 6 minutes and 20 seconds
on the former Delaware Park racehorse, Nathan’s
Pride. Third place went to 2001 Pan American Games
team Gold Medalist Meg Sleeper who finished in 12

Kriss, riding Mystical Illusion, claimed the Harry
T. Peters Trophy for the USA National Junior Eventing

and Team Challenge in Lexington, Kentucky, October
17-20. Because this championship was also designated
a USA Junior Olympic - Equestrian Event, medals were
presented at a special ceremony following the junior
division. Ralph Holstein riding Arctic Dancer won
the Silver medal and Elizabeth Klein riding One Look
won the Bronze.

Trail Horses
I have recently been reminded about a lesson I learned
long ago through an experience that my sister and
I went through in the last year. The lesson is if
a horse changes his behavior, he does it for a reason.
Sometimes we have troublefiguring out the reason,
and sometimes we never figure it out, but there is
always a reason. They don't just decide to change
randomly. Our job is to find the reason,and if the
change is negative, try to fix the problem.
|
We
have had all our horses for quite a while, and we know them
very well. Late last summer, as the weather got cooler,
our horses started to change. We attributed it to the weather.
Horses usually get more energy in cooler weather. In years
past, they were pretty good in the fall, though, and would
only be difficult in the spring when they would first start
trail riding again. We thought maybe they were acting so
hyper because we were in a new barn that year. It was a
fairly boring place for them. They didn't have windows to
look out, it was dark and there wasn't much activity for
them to watch. Maybe they were acting up because they were
bored.
As the weather got colder, they just got worse. Cruiser,
my Morab, wouldn't settle down on the trail, and it took
him a long time to start paying attention to me in the arena.
Ranger was spooking more than ever-even in the arena. My
sister ended up falling off in there for a spook caused
by nothing. Even my quiet Mingo was spooking. He is the
one who changed the most. He started bucking occasionally
on the trail and in the arena.

Merchlinski and The Silver Fox Win The $10,000 NAL
Adult Jumper Final
Harrisburg,
PA—October 20, 2002—Jordan Merchlinski of
Narvon, PA took top honors in the $10,000 North American
League (NAL) Adult Jumper Finals riding The Silver
Fox at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show on Saturday.
Merchlinski
and her ten year-old Thoroughbred mare were the fastest
of two double clears, clinching the title in a time
of 28.674 seconds. Rebecca Green of Whitehouse, NJ
and Johnny Bravo tried to beat their time, but were
a little too slow, finishing second in a time of 30.880.

Merchlinski
and “Gypsy,” as her mare is affectionately called,
went early in the line-up, which meant they had to wait
a long time for the jump-off. It was a difficult time for
the pair.
“I
liked going early in the first round after we went clean,
but then we had to wait a long time to see how many made
the jump-off,” said Merchlinski. “It was so stressful.
That also meant we had to come back first for the jump-off,
which was really hard.”
Merchlinski
and The Silver Fox, qualified for the NAL six years ago
in the Children’s Jumper division, but did not do as
well. The 23-year-old flight attendant was thrilled with
their improved performance.

107th Elite Auction in Germany this month, resulted in the
most expensive jumping horse ever sold at the auction. Lantinus
by Landkoenig/Argentinus, a four year old achieved a top
price of 215,000 EURO. The most expensive dressage horse
at the sale was the seven year old black gelding Walkie
Talkie by Weltruhm/Donnerhall for 110,000 EURO. It was also
the second best ever of these auctions.

from the USA Fifteen
warmblood stallions are now safely housed at Paxton Farm
in Batavia, Ohio to participate in this year’s 100-Day
Stallion Performance Test. The testing, which is held under
the auspices of the Federation of North American Sport Horse
Registries, is held in the United States every other year

from the Farm - Foal and Broodmare As
many of you may know the largest and most costly wild fire
(500,000 acres and almost $200,000,000.) in the US was only
about 15 miles from us this summer. Although we had a few
smokey days and some spectacular views of the flumes from
the fire, we had no problems. The flumes, which were created
when the flames of the fire reached 300 feet and looked
like gigantic cauliflower, would collapse on themselves
from their weight and then send flaming pine cones several
miles away. We were impressed by the beauty of the first
flume which was about 20 miles away, but appeared to be
just a few miles away, until we learned of their destructive
force on their collapse. Our little town of 2500 had more
firefighters living here for awhile than residents. At one
point there were 7000 firefighters on the fire, which is
nearly 25% of the entire wild fire firefighting force.

The
Florida Cracker
Until the early part of the twentieth century, Cracker
Horses were quite numerous in Florida. Many of them
roamed free on the open ranges, while others were
used by Frontier Cattlemen and Settlers. Their serious
decline started during the 1930's and when the Florida
Cracker Horse Association was chartered in 1989, this
breed of horses appeared to be on the edge of extinction.
At that time, the State had three small herds and
the rest of them, about one hundred head, were owned
by a few Cattle and Ranching families who, appreciating
their qualities of stamina, intelligence, quickness,
durability and easy ride, continued to breed a few
for their own use. These Pioneer families and their
unique horses share a heritage that spans many years. |
Cracker
Horses have never been subjected to fad or narrow purpose
breeding and there is not much difference in them and the
horses ridden by Conquistadors more than four hundred years
ago. They are still tough, low maintenance, range bred horses
who are pretty much left alone until selected for use. Though
best known for their abilities as cow horses, they also
do well in equine events requiring quickness and maneuverability.
Although Crackers are still not plentiful, the Preservation
Effort is succeeding, their numbers are increasing and the
demand for them is steadily growing.

This
year's British Equine Event, 2-3 November 2002 at
Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, is set to break new
records! With Christmas looming, organisers are anticipating
repeat of last year's increase in attendence - and

For
the Eriskay Pony society, the annual event is a important
date in the calendar Eriskay enthusiasts from across

Ward Wins NAL $25,000 Open Jumper Speed Finals
Harrisburg,
PA—October 18, 2002—McLain Ward of Brewster,
NY defended his North American League (NAL) championship
title winning the North American League $25,000 Open
Jumper Speed Finals riding Galant at the Pennsylvania
National Horse Show in a time of 51.971 seconds.
Over half the field of 19 riders had rails down trying
to set an unbeatable time on the challenging course.
For a while it looked like Nona Garson and Rhythmical
would snag the victory setting a target time of 53.784.
Ward was undaunted.

“I
watched the first twelve riders to see how the course was
riding,” said Ward. “I knew that I could win it
if I went fast and neat and not go crazy, fast and neat
was the key.” Ward
has competed in the NAL Open Jumper Speed Finals four times
missing only one year. The 27 year-old USET veteran thinks
the North American League is a worthwhile program.

Out
to Sea Captures the $10,000 NAL Adult Hunter Finals
Harrisburg,
PA—October 18, 2002—Shawna Stout of Middleburg,
VA and Out To Sea won the $10,000 North American League
(NAL) Adult Hunter Finals at the Pennsylvania National
Horse Show on Friday. The pair defeated Meghan Garland
of Chambersburg, PA, and Swan Lake’s Arox by
only one point to claim the title.
This is the first time competing at Harrisburg for
both Stout and her 10-year-old Thoroughbred gelding.
Stout could not believe their victory.

“This
is so exciting,” said Stout. “He was perfect in
spiteof his mom. I knew he would go in and jump around,
I was just hoping I would be good enough.”
Stout
and Out To Sea received the highest score in the first round
of 27 entries, but fared less well in the second round of
twelve. Stout blames it on nerves.
“Coming
back on top made me nervous,” said Stout. “It
gave me too much time to think. I was just hoping I could
hold it together. I need to practice coming back for a second
round under pressure.”
