Tea
for Two With Tony!
Well-known
actor Anthony Stewart Head is auctioning tea for two
at The Savoy Hotel in London with two tickets for his
latest play, Peter Pan, in aid of HorseWorld. The address

Anthony
Stewart Head, better known to millions of fans as Giles
from Buffy The Vampire Slayer, will host the tea on

Response Open Eventing Forum
WHAT:

Open Eventing Forum. The purpose of the Forum is to
share training techniques and ideas, so that everyone
can improve or hone their riding and training skills.
As a result rider and horse safety will be enhanced.

Give
time to two private members' Bills to stop the taxpayer
footing more hunting bills |
"The
Government should give time to two private members' Bills
on wild mammal welfare - one in the House of Commons and
one in the Lords - rather than wasting more taxpayers' money
on a Hunting Bill that will never be acceptable to Parliament,"
warns Mark Hudson, President of the Country Land and Business
Association.
The
CLA has worked determinedly to promote the principles behind
these Bills - the only sensible alternative to a hunting
ban. The Bills are identical and aim to give wild mammals
a similar level of protection to that enjoyed by pets and
farmed animals.
Mark
Hudson continues: "Now that the Government's Hunting
Bill has failed, the CLA is calling on Government not to
introduce yet another Hunting Bill in 2004 as is rumoured.
Instead, time should be invested in the only realistic alternative

Veteran
Horse Society Supreme Champion 2003/4 : Hudson Bay aged
30
OLYMPIA
PLAYS HOST TO THE VETERAN HORSE SOCIETY SUPREME FINAL -
SPONSORED BY SSANGYONG.
Judges Colin Roberts and Rob Buckley took over 40 minutes
to decide the overall winner of this years Veteran Horse
Society Supreme Final at Olympia on Sunday 21st December,
and it went to Hudson Bay, an ex-police horse. A stunning
Cleveland Bay x Thoroughbred gelding aged a remarkable 30
years old.
HUDSON
BAY
Hudson Bay competed at their local V.H.S. Area Qualifier
and went on to win the Welsh Regional Final in September
to get to the Supreme Final at Olympia. Despite now living
just outside the Welsh Border, he previously lived at a
HAPPA stables in Gwent.
Over
2,000 veteran horses and ponies took part in this competition
in 2003 and just 10 went through to Olympia. The Veteran
Horse Society held over 468 classes nationwide to find their
Champion and Hudson Bay is not only a stunning example of
what the Society stands for but again shows that even after
rehabilitation an elderly horse can achieve remarkable results
in and out of the ring, he will now hold the Minty Memorial
Trophy for the next 12 months.

Exciting
Developments for the International Association of Equine
Dentistry
San
Diego, California – The International Association of
Equine Dentistry (IAED) recently held its 2003 Annual Conference
from November (6-9) in San Diego, California.
As
a body dedicated to educating equine dental professionals
as well as the public in the field of equine dentistry,
the IAED offered a wide variety of seminars at its 17th
annual conference. Practical demonstrations and instructional
wet labs were offered as well as both educational and scientific
lectures. Addresses were also given on manual and motorized
dentistry techniques.
A
mission statement aimed at the further development of the
equine dentistry profession were discussed at the AGM, as
were plans to raise the profile of the IAED by having an
educational booths at various trade fairs, including the
popular and well-attended Equine Affaire to be held March
25-28 in Columbus, Ohio.

FEI
World Cup Driving in Mechelen
The
third competition of the FEI World Cup Driving takes
place during the Flanders Christmas Horse Show in
Mechelen, Belgium from 26 to 30 December 2003. Mechelen
also hosts the FEI World Cup Jumping and Dressage.
Seven drivers will compete in Mechelen on 26 and 27
December, amongst which two wild cards. Achille Snoeys,
the 59-year old driver from Oostmalle, also competed
in the Nekkerhal last year, where he drove his team
of Nonius horses to the seventh place. Snoeys is a
well-known face in the international driving circuit.
He represented Belgium many times at Championships
and CAIO¹s, such as in Aachen 2003 where he was
member of the golden team. Valère Standaert
has been given the second wild card. Standaert was
member of the silver medal winning team at the World
Championships in 1994 and helped Belgium win the gold
medal in 1996. Standaert came third at this year¹s
national Championships and he will compete in Mechelen
with his team of German and Belgian warmblood horses.

Irish
Sport Horse Studbook claims top placing in the Eventing
rankings of the World Breeding Federation for Sport
Horses 2002/2003 for the 9th successive year |
For
the 9th successive year the Irish Sport Horse Studbook was
the leading studbook in the Eventing Rankings of the World
Breeding Federation for Sport Horses 2002/2003. The Irish
Sport Horse Studbook topped the rankings with a total of
1104 points, well clear of the Selle Francais (2nd) and
Hannoverian (3rd) studbooks with 737 and 534 points respectively.
In the Showjumping rankings of the World Breeding Federation
for Sport Horses 2002/3 the Irish Sport Horse Studbook was
placed 6th, moving up a rank from last years 7th placing.

Horse Society launches e-newsletter
The
UK's largest and most influential horse charity, The
British Horse Society, launched its first ever e-newsletter
today (Tuesday 23 December 2003).
Entitled
British Horse online, to tie in with the Society's
membership magazine, British Horse, the new e-newsletter
offers up to date information on the Society, including
campaigns, news from head office and around the regions
and provides advice for horse lovers on topical issues,
such as horse and tack thefts.

USEF
Announces Show Jumping Selectors for 2004 Olympic Games
Selection
Gladstone,
New Jersey—December 22, 2003—U.S. Equestrian (USEF)
has announced the three selectors plus two alternates who
will participate in the Show Jumping selection process for
the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.
The
Selectors for 2004 are veteran Grand Prix riders Michael
Endicott of Rancho Santa Fe, CA; Eric Hasbrouck of Bedford,
NY; and Lisa Jacquin of Wayne, PA, who is a two-time Olympic
veteran.
The
alternate selectors are USET veterans Ray Texel of Bedford,
NY, and Rich Fellers of Wilsonville, OR, a team Bronze Medalist
at the 1991 Pan American Games. Please

Legendary
Pepiniere Stables to Continue Under Young Forces
St.
Lazare, Quebec – Thanks to Mike Lawrence and Angela
Covert, the legendary Pepiniere Stables in St. Lazare, QC,
will continue to operate as one of Canada’s premiere
equestrian training and show facilities.
In
the spring of 2003, the equestrian community was saddened
by the loss of Gladys Adam, 69, who, for decades, had developed
and coached some of Canada’s most prolific show jumping
athletes and offered world-class show jumping competitions
at Pepiniere Stables. By purchasing the 38-stall facility
on December 8, 2003, Lawrence and Covert have ensured that
the equestrian facility will live on through the operation
of their business, Eastwood Equine Inc.
“We
had a lot of respect for Gladys as a horsewoman and want
to continue the strong tradition that she established,”
noted Lawrence. “One of her greatest legacies is the
horse show that she established and we intend to carry on
that tradition by using primarily the same management team.”

USEF
Approves Modifications to USET Show Jumping Computer List
Gladstone, NJ—December 22, 2003—U. S. Equestrian
(USEF) has approved modifications to the selection procedure
for CSIO/CSI competition that is based on the weekly USET
Show Jumping Computer List.
A
summary of significant changes follows:
One
horse per rider will be included in determining a class’s
value. In the case of a class in which riders are permitted
to ride more than one horse, the rider’s highest ranking
horse from the most recent horse/rider list will be the
one to add value to the class.
For
all classes held outside the United States which will be
included on the USET Computer Ranking System, class values
will be determined using the same system as that used for
classes taking place in the United States.
Points
will still age each week until they are 39 weeks old when
they “age out,” but will be slowed according to
the following system:

World Cup Jumping - Iron Maiden Takes Control In
Olympia
In
a thrilling 13-horse jump-off, British-born German
rider Helena Weinberg claimed maximum points at
the sixth leg of the FEI World Cup Jumping series
in Olympia today.
The show in the heart of London was completely booked
out even before it began last Wednesday night and
the capacity crowd were on the edges of their seats
this afternoon as they enjoyed a real cliff-hanger
of a competition which just kept more exciting by
the moment.

Belgium’s
Jos Lansink was first to go against the clock but lowered
the fourth fence, so it was Peter Wylde who set the early
pace when clear with Fein Cera in 37.94 seconds. Michael
Whitaker was next into the ring however and a scorching
run from Portofino shaved over a second off that target-time.
Sweden’s
Maria Gretzer and Cinderella returned with eight faults
on the board but Belgium’s Ludo Philippaerts really
increased the pressure when Parco broke the beam to take
the lead in 35.59 seconds. Afterwards Ludo said he knew
that might not be fast enough but added "I could not
have gone faster than I did – my horse is not naturally

Gray
Successful At Euro Cup Final
Mary-Haskins
Gray, of Greensboro, NC, represented the United States at
the Waldfried Euro Cup Final held December 11 – 14,
in Frankfort, Germany.
Gray
and her 10-year-old Russian Budenny gelding, Fregat (Fakir
– Rampa) placed 3rd in the first round of competition
with a 66.67%, 4th in the second round with 67.13% and 3rd
in the musical freestyle with 70.33%.

Dressage Tests Now Available
The
Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) has issued new
2004 Dressage Tests for the following levels, effective
January 1, 2004
Please
note the Young Rider Individual Test has been cancelled,
and should be replaced with the Prix St. Georges Test (2000).
The FEI Junior Tests (2003) have NOT been changed and will
remain in effect for 2004. These new test versions must
be used by all U.S. Equestrian-recognized dressage competitions
beginning January 1, 2004. Please

Christmas
Aid to Horses in South African Townships
An
international horse welfare charity is rushing much
needed aid to Cape town townships where the horse
population is being struck down with equine 'flu.
The
ILPH (International League for the Protection of Horses)
has responded to a request from the Cart Horse Protection
Association in Cape Town and is sending £4,500
which will buy 1,000 vaccines to protect township
working horses.

Says
Ian Kelly, International Training Manager at the ILPH, "The
vaccines that we are providing will give these working horses
a much greater chance of survival against the flu epidemic,
thus ensuring that they will be able to continue their work
to provide an income to support very poor families."

Irish
Rider Second In Grand Prix Kur - Milan Masters CDI** Italy
Irish international rider Anna Merveldt-Steffens finished
off her 2003 season on a high note when taking 2nd place
in the Grand Prix Kur (Freestyle to Music) with the 10 year
old German bred mare Hera on a score of 67.99% at the Milan
Masters CDI** in Italy today (Saturday 20th December 2003).
The Grand Prix Kur was won by Birgit Wientzek Plage on Sappalot
with a score of 70.61%. It was a double for the Swiss rider
as she had won the Grand Prix on Thursday (18th December
2003) as well. Fellow Swiss competitor Hansruedi Geissmann
on Florian XII took third place on a score of 66.77%

Seminar To Be Held At U.S. Equestrian Meeting
U.S.
Equestrian will be offering a Safety Seminar Friday, January
16, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, as part of the 2004 U.S.
Equestrian Annual Meeting being held January 14 – 18,
2004, at the Millennium Biltmore in Los Angeles, CA.
The
U.S. Equestrian Safety Seminar will be a forum for an exchange
of the rules and information regarding a wide array of safety
related topics: headgear and concussions; medical coverage
for competitions; equine liability statutes; weather issues,
motorized vehicles on competition grounds, barn safety,
and safety in warm-up areas.
