Armathwaite
Hall Horse Trials & Country Fair Cancelled
The
Armathwaite Hall Horse Trials & Country Fair, scheduled
this year for the weekend of July 19th, 20th and 21st, has
been cancelled.
|
The flagship Lake
District event, which began in 1999, was due to run pre-novice, novice
and advanced sections, plus the PERA Global Masters and the lucrative
Armathwaite Hall Classic section, along with a comprehensive schedule
of showing classes, young event horse qualifiers and a large country
fair.
Since Pfizers
decision not to renew support for the event under the Strongid-P brand,
efforts to conclude a new title sponsorship deal have proved difficult
due to upheavals in the global economy and costs have risen significantly
as a result of the last years FMD abandonment.

Surgical treatment available
for wobblers
by Antonio M.
Cruz, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Guelph
Wobbler syndrome encompasses a group of diseases characterized by
gait instability. One of these diseases comes under the name of cervical
vertebral stenotic myelopathy, producing spinal cord compression at
the neck level. This is a disease characterized by an abnormal gait
in the front and/or hind legs, usually worse in the hind. It is referred
to as "wobbler" syndrome as the horse may seem wobbly when
walking or exercising. The severity of the observed signs varies among
horses. Some horses may seem to have a stiff neck, appear weak or
"lazy", stumble more than normal, or give missteps. Others
may be reluctant to rise or fall easily. These horses suffer from
"ataxia" - a loss of the sense of where their feet are placed
- and may appear "drunk" as the horse lacks perception of
where its limbs are.
The etiology of this condition has been linked to osteochondrosis
and to nutritional factors including mineral imbalances. The potential
inherited nature of this disease has been widely debated. To date,
no single cause of the condition has been identified but in growing
animals it is believed that a strong dietary component is involved
in this disease.

Horse
Passports And Database
All horses
and ponies in England and Wales are to be given a unique registration
number and a "passport" for life, Rural Affairs
Minister Alun Michael announced today.
|
By 31 December,
2003, all horses, ponies and donkeys will need to have a passport,
bringing the country into line with European legislation. The Government
is also in discussion with the equine industry on setting up a central
database on horses which could be used for disease control.
The Government
has looked for the most cost-effective way of meeting this legal requirement
and to find the best way of keeping bureaucracy to a minimum. This
will be achieved by working with the horse industry, within which
many organisations already have a register and issue passports. By
working with those organisations, the need to create a new bureaucracy
has been avoided, and horse users will benefit from a fully integrated
system.

Get
The Dengie Low Down On Laminitis
With
spring grass round the corner many owners will be faced with
the worry of laminitis, which can be a real risk for all types
of horses and ponies. One of the most important preventative
measures is to limit access to grazing through the use of
strip grazing, weight watcher paddocks or grazing muzzles.
|
However it is important
not to starve these animals as adequate fibre will aid normal gut
function and keep them occupied. Look for a high fibre but low sugar
and starch feed, such as Dengie Hi Fi Lite, which is approved by The
Laminitis Trust. Alfalfa based feeds have the advantage of providing
good quality protein and alfalfa has been proven to improve both hoof
quality and growth. Remember to ensure that your horse or pony is
still provided with adequate nutrients by adding a vitamin and mineral
supplement such as Dengie Optimum or Farrier's Formula
Stop
Press: Dengie announce continued support of The Laminitis Trust.
Last year Dengie raised £1500 toward research. Money was raised
by the sales team selling samples of the Dengie range at the shows
attended.

Clicker Training - Shaping
Behaviour in Small Steps
Clicker training was first developed by marine
mammal trainers who shaped performance exclusively with positive reinforcement.
In shaping you take a small tendency to perform in a desired way,
and by reinforcing that behaviour you gradually shift it towards a
more complex behaviour. Dolphin training is the easiest way to view
this. You have a dolphin swimming in a tank. You want it to swim through
a hoop you have hung in the middle of the tank, so you blow a whistle
and throw it a fish every time it turns in the direction of the hoop.
By gradually delaying the whistle, you can train the dolphin to swim
through the hoop.

The
Poitevin
Born and bred in the marshes of Western
France, the Poitevin is the
least known of nine French heavy breeds, and the most endangered.
Its reputation was made by the magnificent mules bred by the
mares for centuries, the biggest and strongest mules in the
world! But as a horse it was sneered at as "a heavy horse
that has more conformational faults than most, is singularly
unattractive in appearance and has little potential as a working
horse" according to Elwyn Hartley Edwards. Yet, as a
descendant of the Flemmish horses brougth to Poitou in the
17th century to drain the marshes, it is related to the Shire
- and hence to the Clydesdale - whose ancestors came from
Holland to reclaim the Fens.
|
Whilst most heavy
horses were bred for specific purposes - including meat production
- the only work required of the Poitevin was that it sired enough
mares to provide for the booming mule trade. It has therefore retained
all the characteristics of the "primitive" horse, including
the rare dun colour. It is lighter than most draught horses and its
gait is sprightly; when black, it is a heavy friesan, abundant feathers
and flowing mane and tail.

American
Paint Horse Association offers four trail ride adventures for
2002 |
FORT WORTH-A diverse
countryside, exciting history and unforgettable experiences on horseback
await trail riders who saddle up with the American Paint Horse Association
(APHA) as part of its recreational riding program in 2002.
APHA is
sponsoring multiple rides this year to make the outings more accessible
to its members. "With four rides around the country, most of our members
will be within about a day's drive of one of these fantastic outings,"
said Ed Roberts, director of long-range planning for APHA. "It's our
goal to introduce as many people as possible to these rides and what
they have to offer.
"Enhancing
our recreational riding program at APHA is very important to me, because
of the high numbers of our members - about 50 percent - who tell us
they are primarily interested in recreational riding with their horses.

A
Horse of Course with Don Blazer
Well,
it's a new year, so it must be a new breeding season.
If it's a new breeding season, then I've got to plead again,
"Please,
don't breed your mare, unless.....
1. She's worth breeding. (Of course you think she's worth
breeding, but
she's not.)
Most mares are not worth breeding because they can't produce
a foal which will have dollar value.
|
|
And if you think
I am whistling Dixie in the dark, just open your eyes and look around.
Most weanlings and yearlings at sales sell for less than the breeding
fee, or the cost of keeping a mare for a year. They are money losers.

The
Waler
Imagine
yourself back in history, when ladies rode side-saddle and
a mans worth was often judged by his choice of horseflesh
and his horsemanship. In the Walers heyday it became
the elite mount, the flashy, usually dark coloured equine
who would carry you across vast distances to neighbouring
properties or into town, where no self-respecting gentleman
would be seen on anything but a Waler.
|
During World War
1 they proved themselves to be the superior cavalry mount, the smaller
types being champion polo ponies and the larger, unbeatable in the
sports of pigsticking and tentpegging. The modern usage of Walers
is unlimited, from eventing to endurance, campdrafting or polocrosse,
in todays world of specialist horses, it is still the best all-rounder.
The Waler type is still the choice of ladies and men alike as a light-weight,
active, intelligent, athletic horses has always been No.1 in Australia.

Ocala,

All proceeds will go back to specific charities in the horse

Horse Fever in Ocala utilized local groups and sponsors. All
the public arts projects, no matter what location, have roughly
the same timelines. A call for artists goes out, a jury picks
the best designs, horses are purchased, delivered, decorated
and then put on display.

But all good things
come to an end, and Horse Fever will have at least one ending on March
22, 2002, when all the horses are auctioned off live at Oak Plantation

ILPH
Welcomes Introduction of Horse Passports
The International
League for the Protection of Horses welcomes the Government's
announcement that all equines in England and Wales will be required
to have a passport.
The new legislation, which DEFRA hopes will be in force by 31
December 2003, is designed to bring us into line with EU legislation
and countries such as Germany, The Netherlands and France who
already have it in place. |
David Mountford,
ILPH Director of Operations comments, "Whilst complete registration
of all equines is a laudable aim, its considered implementation will
be the key to any chance of success across the entire equine sector.
"In welfare terms we hope that the need for every equine to have
a passport will have a significant effect on indiscriminate breeding
and over production."

Hobby Horse Tours
As
the sport of Dressage is gaining in popularity above any other equestrian
venue the demand for experienced trainers and schoolmaster horses
is greater than ever before.
Anke Matthiessen,
Equestrian Tour Manager of Hobby Horse Tours, Inc.: "I have
talked to many very ambitious dressage riders in the US, but in
several areas of the United States there is a shortage of knowledgeable
dressage trainers. The situation is even more difficult when it
comes to 'schoolmaster horses'. Even second level horses are hard
to come by as school horses. The lack of well-trained school horses
makes it very difficult for the lower level rider to know what a
shoulder-in; a leg yield or a collected trot should feel like. Most
riders are in the situation of
having to train their own horse without ever having experienced
the correct movements on a seasoned and expertly trained dressage
horse. For riders trying to move up to FEI levels it becomes even
more critical - it is very difficult to train a horse to do a canter
pirouette, or a passage if both - rider and horse have never done
it before!"

How can we boost the
Immune System of our Horses?
-Antibioticfailure-
A few weeks ago a veterinarian surgeon approached me and wanted to
communicate with me about Immunomodulation.
Well, quite a tongue twister I thought, but interested as I
am in the welfare of horses for over the past 30 years I thought
this sounds very interesting and that it is. I am now
here to tell you how much more we can do for our horses or pets and
humans alike.
The product, which I am going to introduce to the world of horses,
pets and humans, is called TRANSFER FACTOR or in other words, TRANSFER
FACTOR is the main ingredient in a nutrional supplement.
TRANSFER
FACTORS were discovered way back in 1949 by dialyzing leukozytes.
When this dialyzed extract was taken from a donor resistant to a specific
pathogen and injected into a naïve recipient, the resistance
was transferred, thus the name TRANSFER FACTOR.
