stress and injury is available information on correct postural alignment. The
subject of fundamental movement mechanics as a prerequisite to sports specific
training is demonstrated in many top level eastern bloc development programs in

Farmers Thank BHS for their Help over
Foot and Mouth
The BHS has received many expressions of thanks
for the prompt advice it gave to horse riders as soon as the first case of Foot
and Mouth disease was confirmed. Riders have been grateful for the guidance
offered, and farmers have greatly appreciated the way many riders have taken
that advice and not ridden out in the countryside. |
Ben Gill, National Farmers' Union President said:
"I would like to extend my thanks, on behalf of the National Farmers'
Union, for the measures taken by the BHS during the current Foot and Mouth
Disease crisis. It is vitally important that movements within the countryside
are limited to the greatest possible extent, and the measures they have taken
have served to improve this situation."

The use of essential oils in the management of viral infection.
These days, as foot and mouth disease rampages
through the British countryside my thoughts turn to viral infection and the use
of essential oils to help combat them. Essential oils can be helpful on three
levels in the presence of viruses and bacteria:
Many oils are anti-viral and anti bactericidal,
among them Manuka, Tea tree, Bergamot, Ravensara and Eucalyptus.n Eucalyptus
globulus and Bergamot in particular kill airborne bacteria.
Essential oils are often immuno-stimulant so they
can help the body fight of an infection and viruses have no place to make their
home if the immune system is strong.
Essential oils work on the brain to relieve stress
and tension which again leads to a stronger immune system.

Warning on DIY Footcare for
Horses
An alternative method of footcare for horses,
originating in Germany, is causing concern with a leading horse welfare
charity, farriers and vets alike.
The Strasser Method, as practiced by Dr. Hiltrud
Strasser, advocates that horses should not be shod and that, after a short
3-day course, owners are capable of trimming their own horse's feet. The
barefoot method falls within an overall philosophy of keeping horses as close
to nature as possible by not stabling, clipping or rugging them, nor feeding
supplements, administering painkilling drugs or using chemical wormers.

Mustangs
Mustangs are found in all colors and
combinations, all sizes and builds. Most common are browns, bays, chestnuts,
duns; 14-16 hands; slight in build. One very impressive working Bureau of Land
Management Mustang was 18 hands. |
Mustangs are very tough, strong, agile, sound,
quick to learn, and when you gain their loyalty, they follow directions easily.
Protected from being killed or harassed while on Federal BLM lands since the
the 1971 federal "Wild Horse and Burro Act", wild horses are still
subject today to death or displacement by fire, drought, humans with guns
illegally shooting them on federal lands, overgrazing, straying off federal
lands onto non-protected areas and being "disposed of" sometimes by
other, non-BLM federal agencies, and lost legal battles with cattle grazers for
rights to federal land. Currently there are less than 50,000 Mustangs
remaining--with many herds numbering below the population numbers needed to
stay healthy and free from inbreeding. Experts agree that at the present rate
of decline, the Mustang could become extinct by the end of the century.
Determined efforts are now being made to preserve the remaining wild horses by
the BLM, and organizations such as Wild Horse Research Center at Porterville,
CA, the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros in
Scottsdale, AZ, and the North American Wild Horse and Range Systems. Important
strains of Mustang are being recognized and preserved, such as the Cayuse
Indian Pony, Chickasaw Indian Pony (also known as Florida Cracker Horse),
Spanish Barb, the Rocky Mountain Pony, and the Kiger Mustang.

Training Mythunderstandings Primary
and Secondary Lines
We use aids to teach things to horses. In teaching
horses to heed, we define an aid as a methodically applied directional pressure
used to create a shape. Aids need to be horse logical. That means they must
make sense to the horse in terms of what his natural instincts tell him to
do. |
The horse has two lines of influence. So does the
trainer. Heeding uses these lines of influence to create horse logical
pressures that indicate the shapes we want the horse to take. By changing the
relationship of these lines of influence, we can ask the horse to walk, trot,
stop, back or turn and to do those things in a particular direction at a
particular speed.
