Eventing World Cup News
The
tenth qualifier of the FEI Eventing World Cup will
be held at Werribee Park (AUS) from 7 to 9 June in
the framework of the 46th Horseland Melbourne International
Three Day Event, Australia's oldest Three Day Event.
The competition begins with the Dressage Test on Saturday
7 June and concludes with the Jumping final on Monday
9 June. This is the first qualifier held in the southern
hemisphere and one of two (Warwick QLD being the second)
Australian World Cup legs.

The
Eventing World Cup is organised as a three-star level CIC
(One Day Event, i.e. Cross Country test without Phases B
(steeplechase) and C (roads and tracks) qualifiers and a
three-star level Final. It is the culmination of a long-held
ambition by the FEI to establish a series of linked CICs
to promote the Eventing discipline across the world. As
the International One Day format has been adopted for both
the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the series
has an added relevance. The Melbourne competition will give
the Australian competitors and selectors a chance to see
what the needs for the future are if Australian eventers,
four-time team Olympic champions in Rome 1960, Barcelona
1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, are to retain the gold.
Michael
Creber, one of Australia's most renowned International Course
Designers, famous for designing Adelaide as the only four-star
CCI to run in the centre of a city, has significantly reworked
the track at Melbourne. The new track is much more compact
with many fences placed closely together and goes through
a new route including the beautiful lake complex located
in the Mansion Gardens - truly a spectators dream. By special
permission from the FEI, the CIC-W Cross Country test will
be run over the same course as the CCI***, which makes it
longer than usual at 5,130 m.

Submission On Passports To DEFRA Recommends Changes
In Interests Of Welfare And Utility
The
BEF Equine Passport, Disease Surveillance and Breeding
Implementation Planning Team submission to DEFRA in
response to the invitation to comment on the draft
Statutory Instrument 2003 - The Horse Passport (England)
Order 2003 and other documents, will be sent to the
Minister today (6 June).

The
Team has consulted widely with representatives of the industry
and has aimed to work in the best interests of horse owners,
given that the legislation is to be implemented. The submission
contains recommendations that will seek to keep implementation
within the spirit of the Commission Directive, whilst also
working in the best interests of welfare and utility.

Trailblazer
Entries For 2003 Are "Staggering"
Decision
taken to extend 2004 championship to four days
Nearly
58,000 riders have taken part in first round qualifying
competitions for the PSOA/South Essex Insurance Brokers
Trailblazers national championship.
The
series is run by the Permanent Show Organisers Association
(PSOA), and 43 of its member centres around the country
have been running qualifying competitions in showjumping
and dressage. The series is aimed at an estimated 200,000
unaffiliated competitors.
PSOA
spokesman Norman Bargh said that more than 1,950 riders
were expected to qualify for the national final, which will
be held on August 1-3 at the National Agricultural Centre,
Stoneleigh.

I
Love New York Horse Show Goes to the Dogs
Lake
Placid, NY—June 6, 2003—During the “dog-days”
of summer, canines will take center stage at the I Love
New York Horse Show in Lake Placid, NY, when the 11th annual
Doggie Costume Contest, a Lake Placid favorite, returns
on Saturday, July 5, 2003 at noon. All people with leashed
dogs in costume will be admitted to the horse show at no
charge.
Contestants
will strut their stuff in a special ring set up near the
horse show’s Grand Prix ring at the North Elba Showgrounds.
There will be no entry fee, and all entrants will receive
treats. The contest co-sponsors, Lonesome Landing Garden
Center and the Brown Dog Café & Wine Bar, will
present awards to the “top dogs.”
In
addition to the exciting Doggie Costume Contest, Lake Placid
will once again host outstanding equestrian competition
in the heart of the Adirondacks when the Lake Placid and
I Love New York Horse Shows return, June 25 — July
6. Action takes place each Wednesday through Sunday, 8:00
am — 5:00 pm, at the North Elba Showgrounds located
on Route 73 across from the ski jumps.
Dressed
as Yankee Doodle Doggie, last year’s Doggie Costume
Contest winner was Lulu, a sixteen-year-old, deaf, beagle
mix, owned by Laura Antonelli of Bloomingdale, NY. When
Antonelli found Lulu as a stray roaming the streets of Shreveport,
LA, years ago, she took her home. Lulu lived with the Antonelli
family for more than 14 years.

Capistrano Summer Festival will host Kids Days on Saturday
and Sunday with Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona appearing
on Saturday.
The
Oaks Blenheim International starts on Thursday, July 17,
with the $10,000 Hermes International Speed Class, an exciting
equestrian jumping round based on the horse’s speed
and ability to jump imposing obstacles. It will be followed
by the $10,000 Robert Mondavi Winery International Welcome
Class.

Vaulting
Demonstrations to Highlight Activities at Bayer/USET
Festival of Champions, Presented by State Line Tack
Gladstone,
NJ—June 5, 2003— The United States Equestrian
Team (USET) will once again feature vaulting demonstrations
at the 2003 Bayer/USET Festival of Champions, presented
by State Line Tack, June 19 – 22 at the USET
Headquarters and Olympic Training Center in Gladstone,
NJ.
Youth
members of the American Vaulting Association (AVA)’s
Friendship Vaulting Team will conduct daily demonstrations
of vaulting, the newest USET discipline that features
gymnastics performed on a cantering horse.

The
AVA Friendship Team is a specially selected group of high-level
vaulters from vaulting clubs and teams across the country.
Formed in 1995 to represent the sport of vaulting at sporting
events of all kinds all over the country, they come together
to perform, often on unfamiliar horses. In 2002, the AVA
Friendship Team delighted the crowd at the Festival with
their “vault-on” running mounts, handstands, and
pyramid formations.

National
Disability Sports Alliance Announces Riders for NDSA
Championship at Bayer/USET Festival of Champions, Presented
by State Line Tack |
Gladstone,
NJ—June 5, 2003— The National Disability Sports
Alliance (NDSA) has announced the list of riders who have
accepted invitations to participate in the NDSA Championship
for Riders with Disabilities at the Bayer/United States
Equestrian Team (USET) Festival of Champions, presented
by State Line Tack, June 19-22 at the USET Headquarters
and Olympic Training Center in Gladstone, NJ.
This
year, the Championship will serve as the final selection
trial for the USA Disabled Equestrian Team that will compete
at the International Paralympic Equestrian Committee (I.P.E.C.)
Dressage World Championships being held in Moorseles, Belgium
in September.
The
NDSA Championship, presented by the National Horse Sports
Foundation and sponsored by Turner Construction Company,
brings together this country’s top riders with physical
disabilities, including several members of the 2000 Sydney
Paralympic Team.

American Games Dressage Selection Trials at Bayer/USET
Festival of Champions, Presented by State Line Tack
Gladstone,
NJ—June 5, 2003— The 2003 Bayer/United
States Equestrian Team (USET) Festival of Champions,
Presented by State Line Tack, will host the Pan
American Games dressage selection trials, June 19-22
at the USET Olympic Training Center in Gladstone,
NJ.
The
USET Intermediaire I Championship at the Festival
will serve as the selection trials to choose the
rider/horse combinations who will represent the
United States in dressage at the 2003 Pan American
Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August
7-10.

To
qualify for the selection trials, rider/horse combinations
had to compete in a series of qualifying events held throughout
the country from September, 2002 – June 1, 2003. Rider/horse
combinations had to compete in the Prix St. Georges and
the Intermediaire I in a minimum of two USET Qualifying
Competitions. At least one of those competitions had to
be a CDI (Concours Dressage Internationale). In addition,
combinations had to complete one Intermediaire I Freestyle
at a qualifier.

List Announced For Dressage World Breeding Championships
Three
USAE Selection Trials for the 2003 FEI World Breeding
Championships for Young Horses in Dressage were conducted
in May and June in Cincinnati, OH, Raleigh, NC, and
Pasadena, CA.

Horses
which competed in the Finals class of these Selection Trials
in their respective age division, and earned a score of
7.5 or better, are qualified for the Young Horse Short List
for the World Breeding Championships.

Frankie's
Appeal For Retired Racehorses
BRITAIN'S
favourite jockey Frankie Dettori today appealed to the
public to help retired racehorses.
The
team captain on BBC TV's Question Of Sport, who will
bid to win his first ever Derby this weekend (7 JUNE)
at Epsom, said: "We need to do everything we can
to ensure these great horses are not neglected when
they finish racing.
"In the wrong hands, ex-racehorses can be dangerous
but, after proper rehabilitation and retraining, in
the right hands they can be a joy to ride." |
The
original organisation that pioneered the welfare of ex-racehorses
is the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Centre in Lancashire.
An open day is being held on Sunday 22 June to show people
how horses that no longer race are re-trained before going
to new homes.
The
Centre costs £260,000 a year to run, most of which
comes from its own fund raising efforts.
Frankie
said: "The work done at the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation
Centre is fantastic, and the re-training techniques and
riding displays at its open days are fascinating to see.
Everyone with an interest in horses should go along on 22
June."

ILPH
Supports Ragwort Research Funds Appeal
The
ILPH has donated £8,000 of funding towards an
'early warning' blood test for horses that may be
ingesting the poisonous weed, ragwort.
Dr Derek Knottenbelt and his team at Liverpool University's
Equine Science Division have, over the past 5 years,
been developing a simple blood test to detect the
presence of ragwort toxins in a horse's blood, but
it looked that his work may falter due to lack of
funds.

Says
ILPH Chief Executive John Smales, "We could not let
all the good work that Derek and his team have done over
the last five years go to waste because of lack of funds
to finish their project. Anything that can be done to stop
horses dying unnecessarily from ragwort poisoning is to
be applauded."
Comments Derek Knottenbelt, "The ILPH funding has been
an absolute lifesaver to be honest, no question about it.
It has given impetus to the whole project and encouraged
me to drive forward again. I am now optimistic that we will
achieve our objective within the timescale."

NEWS FROM THE EVENTING WORLD CUP
Bettina Hoy (GER), riding the 11-year old gelding Woodsides
Ashby, won the ninth leg of the FEI Eventing World Cup held
at the Rodderberg Park Derby (GER) from 22 to 24 May. She
performed the qualifier's best Dressage test and cleared
the 40 jumping efforts Cross Country course with no penalties.
The pair's final score was 38.20 points.

Junior Rider Sets Sights On Beacon Hill Equestrian Grand
Prix
Lumberton,
NJ – June 3, 2003 – Growing up on her family’s
Gleneayre Farm in Lumberton, NJ, 17-year-old nationally
ranked junior equestrian Leigh Healey has always loved
horses. The youngest of seven children, Healey was placed
in the saddle in front of her parents at the age of
three and by age eight was riding under the tutelage
of trainer Marie Asper.
Healey’s
first experiences in the horse show arena were through
the Burlington County 4-H, where she won several divisions
at the 4-H State Champion Horse Show. Training under
Frank Hernandez, Healey then went on to successful competitions
in USA Equestrian rated horse shows. |
At
the age of 12, Healey began training with renowned trainers
Frank and Stacia Madden, managers of the Beacon Hill Show
Stables in Colts Neck, NJ. Under the Maddens’ training,
Healey now competes in the national circuit and in 2001
became the Children’s Jumper Circuit Champion at the
Winter Equestrian Festival in West Palm Beach, FL, and placed
first and third on her two mounts at the Washington International
Horse Show in Washington, DC
In
2002, Healey won the Junior Jumper Circuit Championship
at the Winter Equestrian Festival, winning five of the nine
$10,000 Classics in the challenging division. She went on
to win both the $2,500 Low and $5,000 High Junior Jumper
Classics and championships at the Garden State Horse Show
in Augusta, NJ. Healey and her horse Laurin are currently
in first place in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic
Series standings for 2003.
Despite
her enormous success as an equestrian, riding horses is
about much more than winning for Healey and her family.
“It is great when you win, but there are a lot of life
lessons that are learned when you don’t win,”
says Ellen Healey, Leigh’s mother. “Horseback
riding and competition have been a positive force in my
daughter’s life.”

Meeting Set To Be Bigger And Better Than Ever!

The July Meeting is set to be the biggest and best yet -
combining the head-turning hats of Ladies Day with world-class
racing and the National Stud July Fair.
Ladies Day at Newmarket Racecourses can boast an amazing

Riding Clubs' Festival of the Hunter

British
Riding Clubs (BRC) received a record number of entries for
their Festival of the Hunter championships which took place
at Grange Farm, Wittering near Peterborough last weekend
(1 June). A staggering 520 competitors took part in this
one-day festival of the horse, comprising open and novice
hunter classes for both junior and senior BRC members and
showing classes for cobs to novice hunters. Liz Prest, Financial
Director of sponsors Kbis Equine Insurance, was delighted
with the sheer volume of entries.

Kappler
and Hough Named USET Co-Athletes of the Month for
May
Gladstone,
NJ—June 4, 2003—Chris Kappler of Pittstown,
NJ, and Lauren Hough of Wellington, FL, have been
named United States Equestrian Team (USET) Co-Athletes
of the Month for May. Kappler and Hough were subjectively
chosen for two of the four positions on the show
jumping team that will represent the United States
at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo,
the Dominican Republic. This marks the first time
since 1990 that any places on a U.S. show jumping
team competing at a continental or world championship
or Olympic Games will be held by riders chosen subjectively.
The Pan American Games selection process, developed
initially by the Active Riders Committee and approved
by the Executive Committees of both the United States
Equestrian Team and USA Equestrian (USAE), allowed
“Selectors to nominate one or two horse-and-rider
combinations to the team before the conclusion of
the trials.”

USET
Announces Vaulting High Performance Program
Gladstone,
NJ—June 4, 2003—The United States Equestrian
Team (USET) is proud to announce a Vaulting High
Performance Plan that will provide Gold and Silver
Medal vaulting athletes with the opportunity to
participate in a series of vaulting training camps
and to receive financial grants. The Vaulting High
Performance Program also calls for the issuing of
grants to support vaulting competitions.

The
first training camp will be held at John R. Keily Equestrian
Center in Woodside, CA, from July 3-6. The training camps,
open only to Gold and Silver Medal vaulters, will maximize
performance through specific instruction on vaulting technique.
These training sessions will also include instruction by
such leaders of the sport as Jeff Moore, Adrienne Stang,
and others on dance, nutrition, sports psychology, injury
prevention, biomechanics, and strength and stretch issues.

WNV
in Mares and Foals-When to Vaccinate?
As we begin our fifth year in dealing with the dreaded WNV,
over 14,000 cases in the United STates as of 2002 have been
reported. The question was raised about a link between the
WNV and abortions in equines.A retrospective study by the
University of Kentucky's Livestock Disease and Diagnostic
Center, from July of 2002 through early 2003, looked at
400 equine abortions for evidence of WNV. Their findings
were suprising. Of the 400 horses examined, 35 had evidence
of WNV. Although this is only approximately 8 percent, it
does require more research to see if there is a connection
between the WNV and aborted fetuses. At this time there
is no evidence that the WNV caused the abortions; only that
there was evidence of the virus in the aborted fetuses.
Further testing and research is ongoing to determine the
relationship between WNV and abortion.

Through History Feature In Top Summer Festival
Stoneleigh Park, Coventry, 9-10 August
Horses
and riding from Roman times to World War I feature in a
new action-packed two-day history event this summer from
English Heritage.
Festival
of History, a superb celebration of the rich variety of
England's social and military history is being held at Stoneleigh
Park, Coventry on 9 - 10 August, from 9.30am - 6pm. Horses
play a starring role - from carrying Roundheads and Cavaliers
into conflict in a thrilling English Civil War battle, to
being put through their paces in a Roman horse race as the
finale to a gladiatorial spectacular.
One
of the equestrian highlights, performed twice each day,
is a Victorian Skill at Arms Ride by the Household Cavalry.
Resplendent in the dashing blue and red uniforms of the
Lifeguards and Blues & Royals regiments, cavalrymen
will display breathtaking mounted skills-at-arms with carbine,
lance and sword, including tent pegging at a gallop.
Horses
will also play a major part in the action as a cast of around
700 Royalists and Roundheads clash in a re-play of the famous
Battle of Edgehill which took place near Stoneleigh Park
in 1642. Horses will also feature in a recreation of a Napoleonic
battle.
Riding
without stirrups was the norm in Roman times and as the
climax to a display of military techniques by legionaries
for the Imperial Roman Army and hand-to-hand combat by gladiators,
skilful riders will show off their prowess in the saddle
and compete in a Roman horse race.
From
the 15th century, brave horses brightly dressed in bold
livery colours will come face to face as dashing knights
armed with lances try to outdo their adversaries in authentic
medieval jousts.

Sales For Northumberland Plate Festival Racing Ahead
Racegoers
Logging On To The Internet In Big Numbers To Book Their
Places
THE
two-day John Smith's Northumberland Plate Festival is set
for a record attendance . . . and there's still almost a
month to go until Newcastle Racecourse's biggest meeting
of the year.
Forty
thousand people are expected at Gosforth Park within the
space of 24 hours between the evening of Friday 27 June
and the following afternoon which features the race popularly
known as the "Pitmen's Derby".
The
racecourse's General Manager David Williamson today advised
racegoers that the 7,000-capacity Premier Enclosure will
be sold out in advance for Saturday 28 June.
He
said: "It's very much a case of book now to avoid disappointment.
Last year there were a few tickets remaining for the Premier
Enclosure on the day. That just won't be the case this year
because advance sales are already weeks ahead of those in
previous years."
The
sales boom has been partly driven by racegoers going online
in increasing numbers to buy their advance tickets. Bookings
made through the racecourse's web site www.newcastle-racecourse.co.uk
account for 10% of all purchases this year.
The
John Smith's Northumberland Plate is run on a day when the
eyes of the racing world focus on Newcastle.

U.S.
Eventing Announces Eventing Grooms Award
The
United States Eventing Association (USEA) announced today
that it is presenting a new award for Eventing Groom of
the Year. Chris Stafford and the British company, Carr,
Day & Martin whose products are available through John
Nunn at Bit of Britain, are jointly sponsoring the Award.
“U.S.
Eventing is delighted that the grooms, who are such a vital
part of the sport, are being recognized for all their hard
work behind the scenes. Their contribution is equally important
to the competitor’s success and the welfare of the
horse. U.S. Eventing would like to thank Chris Stafford
and Carr Day and Martin for making this award possible,”
said Jo Whitehouse USEA Executive Director.
Grooms
must be nominated by employers, owners or riders and will
be judged on best turned out at the following competitions

Samsung
Nations Cup Superleague Success for Irish Team |
The
St. Gallen, Switzerland CSIO 5*, from May 29th to June 1st,
saw Irelands Nations Cup team win Sundays 200,000 CHF Samsung
Nations Cup Superleague class. Following on from last weeks
Nations Cup second placing in Rome, Carling King (ISH) and
Kevin Babington (IRL) were also on this winning Irish team
at St. Gallen. Fellow team members were Coolcorron Cool
Diamond (ISH) and Robert Splaine (IRL), Waterford Crystal
and Cian O’Connor (IRL) and Luidam ridden by Billy
Twomey (IRL).
Coolcorron
Cool Diamond (ISH) and Robert Splaine (IRL) also jumped
clear in Fridays St Gallen Generali Grand Prix to win the
class with Carling King (ISH) and Kevin Babington (IRL)
in sixth place and Abbervail Dream (ISH) and Di Lampard
(GBR) taking tenth.

TROTS INTO WORCESTER'S CENTRUM CENTRE
(SAUGERTIES, NY) - Horse Shows in the Sun (HITS) -- a nationwide
event management company producing the largest group of
hunter/jumper horse shows under single supervision in the
USA -- has saddled up with Worcester's Centrum Centre to
host the inaugural Marshall & Sterling League National
Indoor Finals Horse Show slated for September 17 - 21, 2003.
Headquartered
in Saugerties, NY, HITS created the Marshall & Sterling
Children's and Adult League for amateur show jumping riders
in 1991. In 2002 it was renamed the New Marshall & Sterling
League when it was expanded to involve professional, amateur
and junior riders in a multitude of equestrian show jumping
areas. More than 3,500 riders will compete in the League
throughout the 2002-2003 season at over 450 horse shows
across the country (more than 40 in MA alone).
Riders
from as far away as Canada, Ireland and Columbia will vie
for a coveted spot at the new Indoor Finals in Worcester.
Only 600 horse and rider combinations will be accepted and
a national points system will determine the final qualifiers.
In August we typically see the temperatures soar, and the
competition will also heat up as riders chase points in
the final weeks of the qualifying season. Those who qualify
will be counted amongst the best riders in the country.
Those lucky qualifiers will converge on Worcester's Centrum
Centre for an extravaganza of horses, horsemanship and thrilling
show jumping competition.

Brightling
Park Splashes out for 2003
A
completely new Intro Course has been built for Brightling
Park and many new fences for the Novice and Intermediate
tracks will make it exciting for the regulars to this
longstanding event. Both the water complexes, always
popular with the spectators, have been cleaned and renovated
to ensure safe thrills and spills this year.
The
Horse Trials attracts over 400 competitors including
many international and Olympic riders. Pippa Funnell,
a regular competitor at Brightling, will be back again
this year, as she comments "…it's a good local
event for me with a friendly atmosphere so I'm very
much looking forward to it". |
The
stunning countryside location, with beautiful parkland and
the famous temple, provides a dramatic backdrop to the event.

American
Hunter Jumper Foundation Assists Farrier Through Emergency
Relief Fund
June
1, 2003 -- WEST BOYLSTON, Massachusetts -- The American
Hunter Jumper Foundation (AHJF) recently granted Dennis
Wilk, a well-respected farrier in Ohio, a $2,500 disbursement
from the AHJF Emergency Relief Fund.
Forty-five
year old Wilk was diagnosed last fall with Multiple
Myeloma. This extremely rare form of bone marrow cancer
is similar to leukemia. Although there is no cure for
Multiple Myeloma, there are treatments which can send
it into remission and extend life substantially -- perhaps
for as long as a decade or more. Horseshoeing is a very
strenuous occupation, and this disease robs its victims
of all strength and energy. For this reason, and the
months of aggressive chemotherapy that Dennis must undergo,
it is expected that he will be unable to work for at
least a year. |
A
longtime friend, Jeni Hren-Gaffney, D.V.M., organized a
very successful silent auction and fundraiser to assist
Dennis, his wife Barb and their six-year-old son, Steven.
Almost $30,000 was raised as a result of the fundraiser
and a bank fund! Cathy Bibbs-Cornell created a website to
keep Dennis's many friends and well-wishers updated about
his condition. The website also greatly enhanced the fundraising
efforts. She describes Dennis as having a "wonderfully
witty, magnanimous and gregarious personality, in addition
to his exceptional skill as a farrier."
Dennis's
wife, Barb, is overwhelmed by the support and assistance
from the horse community. "We are so grateful for everything
people have done for us. The magnitude of help is just incredible."
she says. "And the AHJF making a disbursement to Dennis
was truly the icing on the cake."

Over
the Walls Horse Trials Brings Top Eventing Competition to
Northeast
Hardwick,
MA—June 2, 2003—The Over the Walls Horse Trials
will again bring top eventing competition to the Northeast
when it returns to picturesque Great Meadowbrook Farm in
Hardwick, MA, owned by Olympic Gold Medalist Torrance Watkins,
August 1-3, 2003.
Over
the Walls, which comprises three days of exciting eventing
competition highlighting more than 200 horses and riders
from the U.S. and other countries, showcases the nation’s
most accomplished eventers as they vie for the Jack Le Goff
Trophy in the event’s featured competition – the
National Advanced Horse Trials Championship. Over the Walls
also hosts seven other Advanced, Preliminary and Young Rider
division classes.
Expected
to return to defend his title at the 2003 Over the Walls
Horse Trials is last year’s Jack Le Goff Trophy winner,
David O’Connor, the 2000 Sydney Olympic individual
Gold Medalist and team Gold Medalist at the 2002 World Equestrian
Games in Spain. O’Connor won the Championship aboard
his Gold Medal World Equestrian Games mount, Giltedge. O’Connor
also took first place in the Advanced Division 1 competition
in 2002 aboard his Gold Medal Olympic partner, Custom Made.
In
last year’s Advanced Division 2 competition, Australian
Phillip Dutton, a two-time Olympic team Gold Medalist, emerged
victorious with House Doctor, his 2000 Gold Medal Olympic
mount. Dutton also placed second riding It’s A Knockout.
Dutton continued his winning streak when he took first place
in the Advanced Division 3 with Nova Top.

Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Army Win At
Mullingar
THE
THIRD OF the Bank Holiday Kerrygold Grands Prix took
place at Mullingar today (Monday), and produced its
share of surprises.
The
course proved tricky for most competitors, and only
four made it through to the jump-off. Of these, Paul
O'Shea, riding Julie Pratt's <Who's Business As
Usual>, suffered an elimination due to a broken
bridle halfway round the course, but this still earned
him a Fourth in the jump-off, and ahead of the first
round four-faulters.

Winner
Lt. Shane Carey kept up the strong Army presence at the
Grand Prix League with <Shannondale>, taking the top
slot with a double clear and a time of 38.61, less than
a second faster than runner-up Neal Fearon on <Drumagoland
Flight>. Delyth Collins, riding <Creevagh Duca Diamond>
was unlucky to have a single pole down in the second round,
slotting into Third.
However,
the points gained at Mullingar consolidate Carey's No.3
spot on the Kerrygold Grand Prix league table, bringing
his total from 19 up to 29, now just one point shy of equalling
Andrew Dunlop in No.2. Clem McMahon still holds the No.1
league position, on 35 points.

Irish
eyes were smiling in St Gallen today as the boys in
green stormed to victory in the third leg of the Samsung
Super League series and moved ever-closer to the league
leaders from France who, this time around, had to
settle for third place.
The
Swiss, competing on their home ground but unable to
claim Super League points as they failed to qualify
for the series, were runners-up after a third-round
jump-off between Marcus Fuchs and Ireland’s Robert
Splaine while the British slotted into fourth spot
behind the French, and the Italians produced a much-improved
performance to finish fifth.

Legendary
course-designer, Paul Weier, who has been connected with
the horse show at St Gallen for more than 30 years, celebrated
his retirement with a track that was big, technical and
difficult, and the line from the water at fence five to
the following oxer at fence six proved the bogey of the
day.
All
four German riders faulted here at their first attempt,
but three clears from the Irish gave them the advantage
after round one as last year’s Samsung Leading Horse
and Rider combination of Cian O’Connor and Waterford
Crystal provided the discount score when collecting five
faults.
The
Swiss were lying second at this stage, obliged to carry
the four faults picked up by Steve Guerdat and Innovation
when, despite clears from Beat Maendli (LB Pozitano) and
Willi Melliger (Gold du Talus), Tinka’s Boy slammed
on the brakes at the double, fence four, for Markus Fuchs.
It
was a day full of surprises as the French could only produce
one clear, from Gilles Bertrand de Balanda (Crocus Graverie),
first time out while Michel Hecart’s Quilano de Kalvarie,
so impressive at La Baule, stopped at the Samsung oxer at
fence eight leaving his side to count the two four-fault
performances from Eric Levallois (Diamond de Semilly Ecolit)
and Reynald Angot (Tlaloc M).

Videographer Releases Enlightening Video "Fit happens"
Solvang, CA For immediate release: New-Dawn Productions
has just released a new video called “FIT HAPPENS”.
This is the first video released anywhere that explains
saddle fitting using a computer saddle fitting system for
validation.
Currently,
saddle makers and tack shops attempt to fit saddles with
baling wire, plaster casts or thermoform plastic. The lack
of any standardized measurement systems has permitted saddle
companies to develop their own unique nomenclature that
really does not relate to anything, not even the horse.
The
result is absolute chaos for the saddle customer trying
to find a saddle that fits their horse. Because there is
no accurate standardized measurement, equestrians buy saddle
after saddle and pad after pad, never really finding a solution.

Ireland
Wins Swiss Nations Cup After Jump Off
THE
IRISH TEAM of Robert Splaine, Cian O'Connor, Billy
Twomey and Kevin Babington were victorious in St.
Gallen, Switzerland today (Sunday), winning the Samsung
Nations Cup after a breathtaking jump-off with home
nation Switzerland.
Both
teams finished on a total of 12 Faults, and Ireland's
Robert Splaine was sent in to jump against the clock
with Swiss star Markus Fuchs. However, the Corkman,
riding <Coolcorron Cool Diamond> finished with
just two time faults, while Fuchs. riding <Tinka's
Boy> lowered two fences, finishing on a total score
of eight faults.

This
is Ireland's first victory in the current Samsung Nations
Cup Super League, and puts them in second place behind France
in the Super League Table. Ireland last won the Samsung
Nations Cup League in 1999. The Super League was introduced
in 2003, and will include Dublin as one of its competition
venues, in August.

1m50 Grand Prix At Stepaside
IN
THE SECOND of the weekend's national Grand Prix fixtures
at Stepaside, Co. Dublin, League leader Clem McMahon
further consolidated his position with a win and a
Fourth in today's (Sunday) Super League competition,
which had 12 riders through to the jump-off.
Riding

Coyle
Wins Eindhoven Derby
IRELAND'S
TREVOR Coyle has clinched the prestigious Eindhoven
Derby in the Netherlands today (Sunday) with the American-owned
bay mare <Fleur>, and picks up a brand new Audi
A3 car for his efforts.
Dungannon-born
Coyle (42) was Ireland's only entrant in the Show
Jumping World Cup at Las Vegas in April, and has been
staging a comeback during the last 12 months on the
international circuit. He was runner-up in the World
Cup in 1999, riding the Irish-bred stallion <Cruising>.
He
finished the first round of the Eindhoven Derby with
one of only three clear rounds, and with a single
pole down in the second round, could not be reached
by runner-up Michel Robert of France, who picked up
eight faults.

Maintains The Pressure At St Gallen
WITH
THE needle match of Sunday's Nations Cup looming,
Ireland's Cian O'Connor maintained the almost relentless
Irish pressure on the opposing countries with a Second
place in today's (Saturday) St. Gallen Speed Class,
but was unable to equal Germany's Toni Hassmann's
super-fast time of 75.40, coming in over three seconds
slower.
However, 23 yr old O'Connor has now demonstrated that
his second-string horse, ABC Landliebe, is a force
to be reckoned with, having already won the opening
class at the Swiss fixture, and taking a Seventh place
earlier today. Yesterday, O'Connor's team-mates Robert
Splaine and Billy Twomey took First and Second in
the St. Gallen Grand Prix, proving that the Irish
are in fiercely determined mood for tomorrow's Nations
Cup showdown.

Jumping - Kerrygold National Grand Prix League 2003
O'Brien Clinches First Of Stepaside Grands Prix
LT.
DAVID O'BRIEN may have had to pull <Boherdeal Clover>
out of the Nations Cup in Rome earlier this month
because of the horse's aversion to water, but the
Clover Hill stallion showed everyone a clean pair
of heels at Stepaside Grand Prix today (Saturday),
and romped home with nearly two seconds to spare.

Surprise
of the show may well have been Kilkenny's 17 yr old Gerard
O'Neill, who took Fourth with <Duc Du Moyon> in his
2003 Grand Prix debut, having been lent the horse by owner
Cian O'Connor, with a view to progressing the combination
to European Championship standard. Meanwhile, the Army consolidated
its strong league position when Capt. Gerry Flynn took Fifth
on <Rincoola Abu>.
A
total of 81 riders and horses lined out in the sunshine
at the popular Stepaside Show in Co. Dublin for the 1.40m
Leddy Family Partnership Grand Prix, which is part of the
Kerrygold Grand Prix Show Jumping League.

Sport Horse Nationals Seeking Competitors
The
Sport Horse National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship
Show, which will be held at the Virginia Horse Park in Lexington,
Virginia, on September 17-21, 2003, is the only national
single breed competition focusing specifically on the sport
horse disciplines. Owners of Arabian, Half-Arabian and Anglo-Arabian
sport horses are encouraged to attend the show, which will
offer 63 classes in three divisions: sport horse in-hand
and under-saddle, dressage and hunter/jumper. For a complete
list of classes, check out the prize list by going to www.ArabianHorses.org/competitions/nationalevents/sporthorse.
The closing date for entries is August 6, 2003.
To
encourage riders showing on the open circuit to participate,
qualifications will be waived for sport horse and hunters
and jumper classes this year. Dressage horses will be required
to have Nationals qualifications.
All
horses need to be Arabians, Half-Arabians or Anglo-Arabians
registered with AHA or the Canadian Arabian Horse Registry
but do not need to be inspected or approved by any particular
sport horse registry. Both rider and owner need to be AHA
members.

Trail Ride Preparation By Bob Jeffreys
Trail riding is the reason many of us started with horses
in the first place. It’s still my favorite horse activity.
There’s no pressure to perform, no judges and no clock;
just your trustworthy mount, you and Mother Nature. Although
Mother Nature can play tricks on us at times, we can minimize
the effects with good trail ride preparation.
For the purpose of this article, we’ll assume that
your horse feels safe and comfortable with you as his leader
and has had sufficient trail training.
The first thing you can do is to let someone know about
how long you’ll be gone and, if possible, what route
you’ll be following. If you have a map, bring it with
you. If not, and you’re riding in an unfamiliar area,
stop and turn around every once in a while to take note
of what the scenery should look like when you’re returning
home. If you’re going to ride for a long distance or
in rough terrain, an endurance saddle or a properly fitted
Western saddle would be preferred to an English or dressage
saddle. They distribute the weight over a larger area making
it more comfortable for your horse. Dry spots on your horse
in the saddle area after you ride indicate that your saddle
is causing undue pressure on those particular areas. This
prohibits the sweat glands from operating and is probably
causing your horse pain. However, this doesn’t necessarily
mean you need a different saddle. You may have to “pad”
appropriately. Basically you want to be able to insert your
hand between the saddle and the horse’s shoulders or
loins without feeling pressure. You should not be able to
do this where the saddle is resting on his back. It’s
a matter of preference whether a breast collar or rear cinch
is used. If you’re going to use saddle bags, I find
most horses prefer pommel bags which don’t irritate
the horse as much as bags tied behind the cantle. In either
case, tie the loose end to your saddle to prevent it from
flopping against your horse. Tie a slicker or raincoat to
your saddle in case it rains. Wear, or bring along a hat
for the same reason.

at the international dressage show in Lipica, Slovenia today
(Staurday May 31st 2003). Riding Welt Adel she scored 64.76%.
The class was won by British rider Carl Hester and Escapado
on a score of 67.92%.
