ILPH
in Brussels to Lobby MEPs
Representatives
from the ILPH (International League for the Protection
of Horses) were in Brussels earlier this week to lobby
support from MEPs on slaughter horse related issues.
Comments
Jo White, Campaigns Manager at the ILPH, "We
went to Brussels to gain further support from the
politicians for our two inter-linking campaigns, against
the long-distance transportation of slaughter horses
and the possible resumption of the live export of
horses and ponies from the UK to the continent for
slaughter.
"We
are concerned about certain aspects of the draft EU
Animal Welfare Regulations, published this summer,
that will affect the transportation of slaughter horses
into the EU and could allow the resumption of live
exports of horses and ponies from the UK to the continent.

Javlin
Are Back!
"We're
back
and we're here to stay!" says Zoe Fearnley,
Sales and Marketing Manager for Javlin Outdoor Clothing,
part of the Ashtons Manufacturing Group.
Javlin
Outdoor Clothing was created thirty years ago in South
Yorkshire, when a gap in the market for good quality,
warm but functional clothing to wear whilst out sailing
was noticed. The company's owners developed their
own fibre pile fabric, designed the products and Javlin
was born.
In
1972 the British Olympic Sailing team wore their new,
innovative wetsuit to victory, with Rodney Pattisson
bringing home a Gold Medal. Then came those 'Yellow
Wellies' and further Fibre Clothing all developed
for the sailing market. Soon, however, other sporting
fraternities noticed Javlin's clothing and orders
began flooding in from climbers. Javlin was delighted
when the British Everest Expedition of 1975 wore the
Javlin Fibre Pile and conquered the South West Face.
Always on the look out for ways of expanding its range,
Javlin set about captivating the equestrian market,
and developed a full range of products from base layer
to waterproofs.

to curtail the inappropriate use of mechanically propelled
vehicles on countryside rights of way are outlined in a
public consultation launched today by Rural Affairs Minister

The

caused by the use of mechanically propelled vehicles - including
motorbikes, quad bikes and 4x4s - whose users can currently
claim rights of way for such vehicles on the basis that
the routes were historically employed by horse-drawn carriages.

To Spend £100 Million On Christmas Presents For Pets
London
(ots) - Britain's pet owners will spend over £100
million on Christmas presents for their pets this year,
according to Britain's pet charity The Blue Cross ... but
pets in the north will be pampered more than those in the
south.
An online survey carried out for The Blue Cross reveals
that nearly three quarters of pet owners (70%) are set to
buy their pet a Christmas present this year, and that men
are as soft as women when it comes to making a fuss of their
pet at Christmas.
Nearly 4 million people will cook their pet a special Christmas
dinner and the same number of people will send Christmas
cards and presents to friends and relatives on behalf of
their pets.

Charitable Horse Rescue Farm Holding Fund Raiser December
15 - 18th at Concord Walmart to Save Pregnant Mares Slated
for Slaughter
Live and Let Live Farm, a charitable, non-profit, horse
rescue shelter, located in Chichester, New Hampshire, will
be holding a fund raiser December 16th - 18th, 3:00 - 6:00pm
at the Concord Wal-mart. Money raised will help rescue mares
slated to be slaughtered.
Premarin is a hormone replacement for women that is made
from pregnant mares urine (www.premarin.org). Since recent
medical studies have warned of negative consequences of
Hormone Replacement Therapy, demand for Premarin has fallen
by a third. A major pharmaceutical company that uses pregnant
mares to make Premarin is downsizing, and closing one third
of their farms. Because of this, 20,000 pregnant mares (40,000
lives) are scheduled to be sent to slaughter in January
of 2004. Please

"Self
Defense for Trail Riders" training video
These days we are all concerned with our personal safety.
While there are many ways to be safe in our homes, our places
of work, and some parks and recreation areas, there are
few safety measures for us when we are out on the trails
with our horses. Many women ride alone or in pairs and are
vulnerable to attack, especially on trails in more urban
settings.
Scot Hansen, a former mounted police officer and an accomplished
clinician and natural horseman, developed a clinic to help
riders defend themselves while horseback riding on the trails.
Riders have responded well to Scots Self Defense
on the Trails classes. And inquiries have been coming
in from all over the U.S (and the world, in fact) to schedule
clinics and get more information. One of the most common
questions has been, Do you have a video or book on
this? Even people who had been through the class wanted
something that they could take home to review and practice
with.

Choosing a career and then succeeding at it are not
always easy.
But
then 17-year-old Casey Cousins wasn't looking for
the easy way, just the best way to fill her dreams
with success.
Casey
has always loved horses, so being a horse trainer
is her career choice. To assure her dream will be
a success; Casey became the first in the nation to
seek a Professional Designation in Horse Training
from Austin Education Center. Casey will take nine
courses, all online, and all at her convenience.
"I
won a scholarship, but I still have to work to pay
for my education," says the high school graduate.
"So I work in my family's insurance business
and study when I can." Casey lives in Vandergrift,
PA, but since all courses are online, she does her
studying at home instead of traveling to a campus.
"I know I want to train horses, but I'm not positive
yet about specializing. I think maybe I'd like to
train horses for dressage competition-particularly
Andalusians." Please
