Libby's
Launch Easy-Wash Driving Harness
Webbing
specialist Libbys is moving into the driving world with
the launch of a budget-priced, single harness which has
all the benefits of the company 's now-famous riding tack.
The
harness, which can be machine-washed on a standard cycle,
includes soft neoprene at body contact points. It will be
made to measure, but with each one widely adjustable.
"I
started designing the harness just before the Foot and Mouth
outbreak, which meant it went on hold," said Libby
Virgoe, who runs the Plymouth-based company. "A lot
of time has been spent sourcing supplies of the special
soft weave web I needed and the easily-washable neoprene
which I have used in areas such as breeching, chest collar
and dock."

Smith The Bookie's Favourite To Win Inaugural Ladbrokes
Speed Jumping Challenge |
Top
seed Robert Smith, the UK’s number one ranked show
jumper, will start as the bookies’ favourite to win
the inaugural £20,000 Ladbrokes Speed Jumping Challenge
- live on BBC Grandstand at Ascot Racecourse this Sunday
(28.9.03).
Riding Kalusha, ranked 38th on the British Show Jumping
Association’s (BSJA) horse seedings list, Smith has
been quoted the 3/1 favourite by sponsors Ladbrokes ahead
of 7/2 joint second favourites Nick Skelton (Pandur) and
Keith Shore (Pakko), seeded second and third respectively.
The Ladbrokes Speed Jumping Challenge is the world’s
first ever Speed Jumping event and will see sixteen of the
UK’s leading show jumpers race each other in four straight,
identical lanes of seven fences over approximately one-and-a-quarter
furlongs of Ascot’s National Hunt Course. The winner
of each race will be the first past the post with the fewest
number of fences knocked down.
A hybrid of show jumping and thoroughbred racing, Speed
Jumping is a whole new discipline for the country’s
leading show jumpers, demanding a skilful balance of precision
and speed. The concept was dreamt up by the BBC’s John
Inverdale, brand image expert Simon Jameson, show jumper
Nick Skelton and ex-horse trainer Charlie Brooks.

Show
Circuit Magazine Is New Media Sponsor Of 2003 Professional
WCHR Finals At Capital Challenge Horse
The
American Hunter Jumper Foundation (AHJF) has just
announced that Show Circuit Magazine will be the new
media sponsor for the winner of their annual Professional
World Champion Hunter Rider Finals. This year the
finals will be held at the Capital Challenge Horse
Show at the Prince Georges Equestrian Center in Upper
Marlboro, Maryland on October 3.

The
AHJF was formed in 1992 to further the development of the
equestrian sport of show hunter rider and show jumping competition
by providing a national office to organize, coordinate and
support hunter rider and show jumping equestrian competition.
Programs of the AHJF include the World Championship Hunter
Rider Awards, the AHJF Emergency Relief Fund, AHJF Educational
Programs, the AHJF BSA Inc. 401k and Profit Sharing Plan.
They also feature the annual AHJF Hunter Classic in Wellington,
Florida, which next year takes place on February 21.

Young
Irish Team Second At Zagreb Nations Cup
WITH
echoes of the glorious 99/2000 season, a young and
inexperienced Irish Nations Cup slotted into second
place at the Zagreb Nations Cup in Croatia today (Friday).
Only
one member of the squad (Michael Kerins) had ever
competed at senior Nations Cup level before, and that
only weeks before, yet the Irish ran riot through
the competition, missing sharing the top spot by just
one fence.
Twenty-one
year old Ryan Crumley from Derry, riding the 10 yr
old stallion <Baltimore> racked up an impressive
double clear round, while Dave Quigley and Paul O'Shea
took four faults apiece in the first round, with O'Shea
just having a foot in the water jump, but both had
clears second time out. Michael Kerins was less fortunate,
having been eliminated when he failed to hear the
bell in the first round, and was not required to jump
in the second round, to give Ireland a total of just
eight faults overall.

Show
Ring Star Set To Shine At Southern Equine And Country
Fair
Lynn
Russell entered the world of the show ring almost
by accident, after winning a working hunter class
with a horse she had been trying to show jump.
She
then bought a cob from the local paper, qualified
for Wembley and, bitten by the bug, started to combine
showing with her career in marketing and PR until
she eventually saw the light and gave up the day job.
Since
then she has become renowned for her success in all
manner of ridden classes, with particular success
in cob classes. Her current superstar (all her horses
are named after stars) is Polaris, who won the Supreme
Championship at the British Show Hack & Cob Association
Championships last year - bringing his tally to well
over 50 titles to his name.

Lynn
is able to see the potential in even the most undeveloped
frame, and she has produced more winners from ugly ducklings
than Hans Christian Andersen! She is always eager to share
her knowledge and expertise, which is why she will be providing
a demonstration on horses' form for showing in the Top Equestrian
Arena at the Southern Equine and Country Fair, Shepton Mallet,
on 25 and 26 October.

Foal Auction Prinsjesdag breaks all records
The excitement on Tuesday 16 September could be felt
in the whole of Ermelo: in a fantastic show, auctioneer
Hans Sinnige presented 62 foals with an average price
of 10,306.45 euro. Not only is this average a record
in the history of Dutch foal auctions but also there
has never been such a high price bid for the top foal
of an auction. The exceptional mover, Wandurel (Ronaldo
x Weltmeyer x Rubinstein I x Almeo) of breeder J. Schel
of Linden went for as much as 44,000 euro to Dirk Kat
of PrimeVal BV in Noord Holland. But those present in
the full-to-bursting tribunes, standing enclosures and
VIP boxes enjoyed many more fabulous moments at the
foal auction: the Chellano Z x Quidam de Revel, the
Chin Chin x I Love You, the Quidam de Revel x Corrado
I and the De Niro x Rubinstein I, respectively, fetched
33,000; 29,000; 25,000 and 24,000 euro.

Boynton King Mesmerizes the Crowd at The Governor’s
Club

members of the exclusive Governor’s Club, located at
Philips Point in West Palm Beach, learned a new way to relax

Marshall
& Sterling League National Indoor Finals Will Ride
Again at Worcester's Centrum Centre |
SAUGERTIES,
NY (September 25, 2003)—Roller Coaster, a beautiful
eight-year-old dapple grey Holsteiner, owned by Elaine Decanio
of Pittstown, New Jersey, and ridden by Todd Minikus of
Loxahatchee, Florida, was the last horse to be pinned at
the inaugural Marshall & Sterling League National Indoor
Finals, presented by Corona-Lexol. Minikus and Roller Coaster
emerged the victors in the $100,000 King Shavings Grand
Prix, the grand finale to the five-day event, which took
place at Worcester's Centrum Centre, Worcester, Massachusetts.
Like
the horse's name, the planning of an indoor horse show can
be quite a roller coaster ride, and is not for the faint
of heart. Over the five days of competition, almost 600
horses were accommodated at Worcester's Centrum Centre,
either stabled inside the 100,300 square ft. exhibit hall
adjacent to the arena, or nearby at a parking lot across
the street from the building's entrance. Over 6,000 bags
of King Shavings were used to bed down the horses, and hay
and feed were available 24 hours a day.

National Pair Horse Championship to Highlight Driving Competition
at 2003 Fair Hill International
Fair
Hill, MD—September 24, 2003—The U.S. Equestrian
Team (USET) National Pair Horse Championship will highlight
the driving competitions at the 15th annual Fair Hill International
Festival in the Country at the Fair Hill Natural Resources
Area in beautiful Fair Hill, MD, October 23-26, 2003.
Several
of the nation’s leading drivers will be on hand to
compete in the Championship. Heading the list is Larry Poulin
of Petersham, MA, an eight-time World Championship veteran.
Poulin has won the USET Pairs Championship five times (1985,
1986, 1988, 1989, and 1995). He will be making Fair Hill
one of his first competitions following his return from
the 2003 Pairs World Championships, where he helped the
U.S. finish eighth out of 20 teams.
In
addition to the USET Championship, the 2003 Fair Hill International
showcases numerous other top driving divisions. Fair Hill’s
Advanced Singles and Four-in-Hand competitions will serve
as selection trials to determine the horses and drivers
who will represent the United States and Canada in the 2004
Singles World Championship in Flyinge, Sweden and those
who will represent the United States in the Four-in-Hand
World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.

WHAT: King Shavings US Grand Prix League (USGPL) Invitational
Finals - September 24-28, 2003
WHO: The top 30 qualifiers in four categories will be invited
to compete in the King Shavings USGPL with no entry fees.
The invited riders will qualify for the Invitational Finals
and awards by competing in qualifying classes offered at
Marshall & Sterling League member horse shows nationwide
during this year's League season. For the Finals, the top
30 Jumpers in each category are determined based on money
won at member events. The top 30 Pre-Green Hunters qualify
based on points earned at member events. The New Marshall
& Sterling League National Standings will be used to
determine the top 30 who will qualify in each category.
The Riders must be members of the Marshall & Sterling
League in order for their money won/points to count.

American Paint Horse Association founder earns coveted
Golden Spur Award in Lubbock

FORT
WORTH, Texas-American Paint Horse Association (APHA) founder
Rebecca Tyler Lockhart took her rightful place with other
legendary ranchers of the American West when she formally
received the Ranching Heritage Association Golden Spur Award
in Lubbock, Texas, on September 20.
The
awards reception was attended by more than 250 members of
the ranching and livestock industry. In addition to representatives
from APHA, other people attending the event and recognizing
Lockhart's achievements included individuals from the American
Quarter Horse Association, National Cattlemen's Beef Association,
Texas Cattle Feeders Association, Texas CattleWomen and
Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.
Lockhart,
of Ryan, Okla., was recognized for the true grit and determination
she called upon daily in the early 1960s to champion the
cause of the American Paint Horse. As a result of her efforts
and pioneering spirit, the American Paint Horse Association,
based in Fort Worth, Texas, has evolved into one of the
fastest-growing breed registries in the world.

Kicks Off Lanaken With A Fourth
IRELAND'S
Cian O'Connor kicked off the FEI World Breeding Championships
at Lanaken, Belgium, today (Thursday) with a fourth
place on the Irish-bred <Echo Beach>.
In
a massive field of 128 horses, O'Connor and Echo Beach
were competing in the first competition of the day,
the first qualifier for Sunday's 6 yr-old horse final
at the prestigious event. The class was won by Australia's
James Paterson-Robinson's <Portorico>.

Another
Fishy tale! or The British Bid for the Route du Poisson
2003
This
is Hilton Herbs second Route du Poisson and the third time
the company has sponsored the British Heavy Horse Driving
team. Company directors Tony and Hilary Self just can't
wait to get their feet on to the backstep of the marathon
vehicle, offer the team the benefit of their endurance experience
and cheer them onto victory.
The finishing touches have been put to the FEI marathon
vehicle and the brass on the 18th century horsedrawn Fire
Engine has been given a final polish, ( more of this later)!
The
last piece of harness has been polished and hung up in the
HGV tractor trailer unit and two spotless Percheron Heavy
Horses have been carefully loaded. Chef d'equipe Rowena
Mc Dermott and her husband John are on their way to Dover
to join the rest of the British Heavy Horse Driving Team
for the short trip across the Channel to France.
For
Rowena and John this will be the 4th time they have participated
in the famous 24 hour relay race that re-enacts the route
taken by the dray horses when transporting fresh fish from
the coast to the Paris markets.
This
year 15 teams of 20 horses from all over Europe will travel
over 270 kilometres from Boulogne sur Mer to the famous
Vincennes racecourse in Paris. In addition to the relay
each team is required to field horses that compete in the
"specials", these are tests of skill that can
range from pulling a 500kg wooden fishing boat across the
beach in Boulogne, to manoeuvering a large double decker
charabang through a series of hazards!

Beware
the rain warns Spillers
There
is a real risk of laminitis once grass starts to grow on
pasture parched by the long dry spell, warns Ruth Bishop,
Technical Director.
It
is inevitable that rain will produce a flush of highly nutritious
grass this autumn. The parched, dry land conceals warm soil,
where plant nutrients have accumulated around the grass
roots while there has been no growth during the summer.
Once rain arrives, the grass plant will flourish in the
same way as pasture which has been fertilised.
Owners
of horses and ponies at risk of laminitis are advised to
manage them as they would in the spring. Limit grazing once
the grass grows and use SPILLERS HAPPY HOOF, the very palatable
and balanced chopped fibre feed or SPILLERS HIGH FIBRE CUBES,
the complete low calorie feed which perfectly meets horses’
and ponies’ needs for a high fibre diet. Both feeds

Slam Victor Launches New Video
Pippa
Funnell's momentous victory at Burghley, which also
netted her the valuable Rolex Grand Slam award of
$250,000 for winning Badminton, the Rolex 3-Day Event
in Kentucky, and Burghley, provided an exciting climax
to the season for her sponsors, Equestrian Vision.
Burghley provided the ideal venue for the launch of
their new video, Pippa Funnell: Riding Your New Horse.
One of the great strengths of the double European
and Badminton champion is her ability to forge successful
partnerships with her new horses and she cannot stress

Samsung
Super League News : "If you can meet with Triumph
and Disaster, And treat those two imposters just the
same…."
French
Chef d’Equipe, Jean-Maurice Bonneau, quoted this
line from Rudyard Kipling’s poem "If"
in the aftermath of the drama-filled Samsung Super
League series final in Barcelona last Sunday when
his side emerged victorious in the League but heavily
defeated on the day.
On
that extraordinary afternoon the formbook was completely
upturned in the second round. The Frenchman commented
that he would have been very happy if his side was
on the podium having taken one of the top-three final-leg
placings but instead, he said "we felt like the
actors in a horror movie" when it all went seriously
wrong and they finished bottom of the pile.

There
were no begrudgers however as he held the League trophy
aloft – "the results we produced earlier in the
season paid off today" Bonneau said as he reflected
on the eight rounds of the series dominated by his teams
which recorded a hat-trick of wins in La Baule, Rome and
Dublin.
They
had taken a firm hold at the top of the leaderboard from
the start and when the second-placed Irish failed to capitalise
on their moment of weakness last Sunday it was a "fait

Named AAEP Equine Industry Board Member
Lexington,
KY-- Ray Paulick, editor in chief of The Blood-Horse and
executive vice president and editorial director of Blood-Horse
Publications, has been selected as the American Association
of Equine Practitioners’ (AAEP) equine industry representative
on the group’s board of directors. His term will begin
during the AAEP’s 49th Annual Convention in New Orleans,
La., November 21 – 25, 2003, and run through 2006.
"Ray
was selected for this position because of his knowledge
of the equine industry and his ability to analyze issues
from both the industry's and horse’s perspective,”
said Wayne McIlwraith, DVM, PhD, AAEP past president and
chairman of the AAEP’s Nominating Committee. “We
look forward to his contributions to the AAEP’s decision-making
processes.”

"Superstar" Is Not For Sale!

earns reserve champion place at HOYS
A
potential superstar is how the judges viewed the Cob which
won the South Essex Insurance Brokers Search for a Star
supreme championship - but owner Rebecca Brierley still
said "no" to the people who wanted to buy Barney
Rubble V.
"He
was a gift from my husband and the two of them gave me the
experience of a life time at the Horse of the Year Show,"
she said. "No money could buy him now."
Mrs
Brierley, a company director from Huddersfield, had already
taken the Cob Championship to go into the Supreme line-up,
where one of the judges, Anne Pritchard, commented that
"we may have found a superstar."
Now
Barney Rubble V will spend a winter in the hunting field,
combined with showjumping and some dressage, before going
on to open Cob and working Cob classes next year.

Condios
and Danish Team Place in Nations Cup of Podebrady
Jumping
his first Nations Cup, and in the pivotal anchor position,
eight-year-old Condios and the Danish Team placed eighth,
and in the prize money, at the CSIO-W Nations Cup of
Podebrady (Czech Republic) on 13 September.
Condios
had four faults in the first round, knocking the last
fence, and eight faults in the second round, including
an unlucky step on the tape during takeoff over the
water jump. |
By
virtue of having only four faults in the first round of
this CSIO Nations Cup, under the rules of the International
Equestrian Federation (EFI) Condios has qualified to be
a member of the Danish Federation's Olympic Team. Unfortunately
Denmark did not qualify for the Olympics at the European
Championship in August, so if Condios is to make it to Athens
he and his rider, Henrik Gundersen, will have to qualify
as individuals during the 2004 outdoor season.

When
it comes to horse feed, being cheap can be expensive.
“Not
only does it actually cost more in dollars to feed cheap
concentrates, the red ink also adds up in poor performance,
poor growth, the cost of additional supplements, the additional
amount needed to be fed, and the possibility of veterinary
bills,” says Eleanor Richards, nutrition specialist.
Richards teaches Nutrition for Performance Horses as part
of the nine-course Professional Designation in Horse Training
program (www.horsecoursesonline.com) offered by Austin Education
Center.
If
you do the math, says Richards, it is easy to see how cheap
feeds actually take dollars out of your wallet. The feeding
directions for an economy horse feed which retails for $5
per 50 pounds says an adult horse in light training should
get 1.5 to 2 percent of their body weight per day, along
with adequate forage, free choice salt and water.

feeding directions of a high quality feed which retails
for $9 per 50 pounds says an adult horse in light training
should get .5 to 1 per cent of body weight per day, along
with adequate forage, free choice salt and water.

During the Gala dinner hosted by Samsung Electronics on
Sunday 21 September in Barcelona to celebrate the conclusion
of the first Samsung Super League season, the President
of the FEI, HRH The Infanta Doña Pilar de Borbõn
presented the FEI Award for Dedicated and Distinguished
Services to Equestrian Sport to Mr Kun Hee Lee, Chairman
of the Samsung Group and IOC Member. The Award was presented

Healey is Victorious in HBO Junior Medal Finals
New Jersey Rider Tops a Field of 67 Competitors at Marshall
& Sterling League National Indoor Finals |
WORCESTER,
MA (September 22, 2003)--Leigh Healey of Mount Holly, New
Jersey, claimed top honors in the HBO Junior Medal at the
Marshall & Sterling League National Indoor Finals. A
total of 67 riders were invited to compete at Worcester's
Centrum Centre, the League's new indoor venue in Worcester,
Massachusetts.
After
the fist two rounds, Healey topped the field with an average
score of 90.76. There was a tie for second place - Maria
Schaub and Jamie Duva both posted an average score of 87.01.
Ruth Drumm posted an average score of 86.09 after the second
round, putting her in third place.

Wins USET Four-in-Hand Championship at 2003 Gladstone
Driving Event
Gladstone,
NJ—September 22, 2003—Chester Weber of Ocala,
FL, emerged victorious in the United States Equestrian
Team (USET) Four-in-Hand Championship at the Gladstone
Driving Event in Gladstone, NJ, September 19-21.
At
the Event, held at Hamilton Farm Golf Club and Equestrian
Center, home of the USET Headquarters and Olympic
Training Center, Weber won the dressage phase of competition
with a score of 39.36 penalties. He placed second
to Tucker Johnson of Hobe Sound, FL, in the marathon,
scoring 100.34 penalties to Johnson’s 99.83.
Weber had a clear cones round to clinch the win with
a final score of 139.70 penalty points.

Ascot
Racecourse To Host First Ever Speed Jumping Event |
Show
jumping and thoroughbred racing will join forces for the
first time ever on Sunday 28th September as Ascot Racecourse
witnesses the birth of a brand new equine sport, Speed Jumping.
The
inaugural event, the £20,000 Ladbrokes Speed Jumping
Challenge, will see sixteen of the UK’s top show jumpers
- including Nick Skelton, Robert Smith and Michael and John
Whitaker - race each other over four straight, identical
lanes of seven fences over a distance of approximately 500
yards. The winner of each race will be the first past the
post with the fewest fences down. The afternoon’s action
will comprise four Heats of four, with the first two in
each Heat progressing to the Semi-Finals and the best two
in each Semi contesting the Final.
The
concept of Speed Jumping was dreamt up by John Inverdale,
one of the country’s leading sports broadcasters, Simon
Jameson, a brand image expert used by companies such as
Channel Four and Hutchinson, Nick Skelton one of the UK’s
most successful show jumpers, and Charlie Brooks, ex-horse
trainer turned media pundit.

Andrew
Drives To Top Spot
THIS
year's Alva International Concours D'elegance at Burghley
went to Andrew Hamilton Rhodes and Brookfield Eclipse.
A
four-year-old Hackney, Brookfield Eclipse and Andrew
are based at Berkeley in Gloucestershire, with Andrew
fitting in competing around his job as a chef.
Driving
for just two seasons, Andrew was delighted with the
win, against such strong competition and at a such
a prestigious venue.
"It
was a great feeling do win such at Burghley, it is
a wonderful venue and I was delighted. I really enjoy
driving and competing."
The
class was held in the main arena at Burghley and attracted
17 turnouts to come before judge Allan Curtis.

European
Eventing Championships 2003 |
The
European Eventing Championships held at Punchestown this
year finished with six Irish Sport Horses in the top twenty.
Highest placed of these was Shear L’Eau (ISH) ridden
by Leslie Law (GBR) to take fourth place in the final individual
results. Moonman (ISH) and William Fox-Pitt (GBR) took eighth
while Just Beauty Queen (ISH) and Susan Shortt (IRL) came
eleventh. Mark Kyle (IRL) rode Drunken Disorderly (ISH)
to finish seventeenth, Trumpet Pierre (ISH) ridden by Heinz
Wherli (SUI) finished nineteenth and behind him in twentieth
place was Dunrath Hill (ISH) ridden by Trevor Smith (IRL).
Great Britain won the team event with Shear L’Eau (ISH)
ridden by Leslie Law and Moonman (ISH) ridden by William
Fox Pitt making up half of their successful team. Ireland
landed in fourth place with two Irish Sport Horses, Just
Beauty Queen and Don’t Step Back ridden by Susan Shortt
and Patricia Donegan

Pupils
encouraged to grow a career in Tayside's rural industries
School
pupils from across Tayside and the Mearns were given
the chance to make carnation buttonholes, cuddle guinea
pigs and ride a life-sized "horse simulator"
last week (Wednesday 17th September) - all with the
aim of encouraging them to consider a career in Scotland's
land-based industries!
Almost
300 pupils attended the careers event at Wester Meathie
Farm, Inverarity, near Forfar, which was organised
by the Tayside Rural Training Forum, of which Lantra
is a partner.
The
12 to 14 year olds were treated to a tour of eight
demonstrations from local experts working or teaching
in agriculture, animal care, biodiversity, equine,
floristry, gamekeeping, horticulture and land-based
engineering.

Minikus and Roller Coaster Win the $100,000 King Shavings
Grand Prix at the Marshall & Sterling League National
Indoor Finals |
WORCESTER,
MA (September 22, 2003)—Todd Minikus of Loxahatchee,
Florida, and Roller Coaster, an eight-year-old grey Holsteiner
gelding, owned by Elaine Decanio of Pittstown, New Jersey,
won the $100,000 King Shavings Grand Prix at the Marshall
& Sterling League National Indoor Finals. Minikus, who
served as the Alternate for the USET 2000 Olympic Games
Show Jumping squad, thrilled the crowd at Worcester's Centrum
Centre with a fine display of horsemanship. The $100,000
King Shavings Grand Prix was the grand finale of five days
of competition at the new venue for the Marshall & Sterling
League National Indoor Finals. Jonathon
Millar of Perth, Ontario, and Karat, a fifteen-year-old
grey gelding, owned by Mr. & Mrs. Don Stewart Jr. of
Ocala, Florida, took second place in the competition. Jonathon,
the son of Olympic veteran Ian Millar, is proving that success
runs in this great equestrian family.

Kurten
Scores At Haras De Jardy
WHILE
her fellow Irish riders battled in Spain to retain
their Super League placing, Jessica Kurten put in
a consistently good performance at Jardy, France,
over the weekend, featuring on both her new horse
<Panamo K>, and also on the veteran <Paavo
N>.
On
Friday she won the opening Two-Phase Class on Panamo,
and took a fourth later in the day on Paavo. On Saturday
she brought Panamo out for the speed class, achieving
a third, but was unlucky to have a pole down in the
first round of Sunday's big Table A class, also with
Panamo, and although she didn't make it to the jump-off,
finished a respectable ninth out of 26 starters, but
just out of the money.

Drivers Place Eighth At World Pairs Driving Competition
The
U.S. Pairs Driving Team placed eighth at the World
Pairs Driving Competition in Haras de Jardy, France,
September 18-21, with a final score of 271.1. Twenty-three
nations were represented in either team or individual
competition – A total of 64 drivers competed.
Lisa
Singer, of Chadds Ford, PA, placed 16th in the individual
competition with a score of 143.61, Larry Poulin placed
27th with a score of 153.53 and Mike McLennan finished
43rd with a score of 169.36.

Event Team takes gold - Funnell clinches individual
bronze
Britain has retained the title of European Champions
at the Sport Ireland IFG European Championships at
Punchestown in Ireland (September 18-21). The British
team of Leslie Law, Jeanette Brakewell, Pippa Funnell
and William Fox-Pitt finished with an advantage of
12.6 penalties over second placed France, with Belgium
more than 30 penalties adrift in third.

Pippa
Funnell made a brave bid to defend her individual title
but had to settle for a bronze medal behind the new European
Champion, 23 year old Nicolas Touzaint from France, who
led throughout the competition on the nine year old grey
Galan de Sauvagere.

Samsung
Super League News : Delight Despite Disaster For France
In Final!
In
a gripping conclusion to the inaugural Samsung Super
League series, France suffered a heavy defeat in Barcelona
today but still claimed the league trophy by a ten-point
margin.
The
Irish had to settle for joint-second in the final
standings after an emphatic victory in this leg by
Germany whose final rider, Ludger Beerbaum, never
had to jump a fence while the Italians, clinging desperately
to the bottom of the leaderboard, rose manfully to
the occasion, avoiding relegation when adding an extra
12 points to their total as double-points were awarded.
Sweden however must compete in the second division
next season as, despite a brave struggle by Malin
Baryard, Helena Persson, Royne Zetterman and Helena
Lundback their equal-fourth placing today was not
good enough to save them.

Few
could have predicted the Barcelona result as the Spanish
squad, taking part as host country but not entitled to Super
League points, slotted into runner-up spot. The Italians,
so very weak thoughout much of the series, shared third
with Belgium while Sweden and Britain divided fifth, Holland
was sixth, the Irish were seventh and the normally brilliant
French came last.
Even
more remarkably, the Dutch, Italians and Germans shared
the lead on a zero score at the end of the first round when
France, Sweden, Spain and Belgium were next in line with
just four faults each. The British carried eight into round
two but the Irish were already in trouble, bringing up the
rear with 16 on the board at the halfway stage.

Funding
Available For New Technology Development
A
pioneering new initiative has been launched to provide assistance
for new technology innovations in the saddlery industry.
The
Equitech project brings together major industry players
including BETA, WES, leading manufacturers, the Centre for
Engineering Excellence and Advantage West Midlands.
A joint bid for funding was successfully put forward by
Walsall Saddlers and the Centre of Engineering Excellence
in Wolverhampton, to Advantage West Midlands which has provided
£98,000 funding for the provision of expertise for
the next two years.
The
money will be used to provide technical assistance and open
gateways to information for projects using and developing
new technology in the manufacture of saddlery products,
including computer aided design, which will allow saddlers
to create detailed images for new designs and innovations
to help move the industry forward into the 21st century.
Phil
Wilson leading the project for the CEE said: "It is
hoped that the funding made available for the Equitech project
will really help in developing new methods for saddlery
design and understanding of how important the fit and structure
of equipment is in proving comfort for the horse.

launches updated reference section at the British Equine
Event in association with Duchy College.
HorseIT.com,
the equestrian internet portal with approximately 60,000
users per month is to launch its newly researched student
reference section at the British Equine Event 2003.
The
reference section was first designed in 2001 by Tracy Webb
who was at that time undertaking an HND industry placement
with HorseIT.com.
The
reference section aims to cut down on the time spent by
students looking for information on the internet on specific
equine based topics by placing all relevant links in one
easy to use area.
"I
came up with the idea of providing an educational internet
base for equine students after spending the best part of
a day surfing the web in search of information on 'Modified
Acid Detergent Fibre' which ended up to be a frustrating
experience as I seemed to be going around in circles"
said Tracy who has since graduated from the University of
Plymouth with a BSc (Hons) in Animal Science (Equine) and
is now Senior Sales Executive at HorseIT Ltd.

Takes Second Speed Class At Barcelona
IRISH
riders have dominated the speed classes at the Spanish
venue this weekend, with Lt. Shane Carey and Cian
O'Connor being the main contenders.
Carey
confirmed Irish supremacy today (Sunday) in these
classes with his second Speed win, on the 11 yr old
mare <Laughton's Lass>, owned by John Troy of
Dublin and leased to the Army Equitation School.
Carey
and O'Connor repeated their speed act from yesterday's
Haagen-Dazs Cup, with Carey taking the No. 1 spot,
and O'Connor following in fourth with <ABC Land
Liebe>. The tussle at the top today was ferocious,
with only fractions of a second separating the likes
of Carey, Sweden's Malin Baryard, Italy's Roberto
Arioldi, and Ireland's O'Connor.

owned by Mr. & Mrs. Don Stewart to third place.
Twenty-five
horse and rider pairs put on a fine display of show jumping
competition for the evening crowd at Worcester's Centrum
Centre. Course designer David Ballard from Hornby, Ontario,
set a challenging first round course. The eleven-fence course
was beautifully accentuated by trees and shrubs provided
by Weston Nurseries, of Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The double
combination seemed to pose the most problems for the competitors,
and served to narrow the field to six horses for the jump-off

Finish Eighth At Barcelona But Hold Super League Joint
No. 2 Spot
AN
IRISH squad weakened by equine injuries managed only
an eighth place in the Samsung Super League Final
in Barcelona today (Sunday) but the shake-out of double
points and some surprising results means that Ireland
clung on to their second place in the Super league
rankings, though now share it with Germany, who fielded
an elite team, and won today's Nations Cup competition.
France
held onto their Super League spot at the top of the
league, though finishing ninth today, while Italy
put in a strong performance to come home in joint
third behind home team Spain, who are not part of
the Super league rankings.
And
despite finishing joint fifth at Barcelona, Sweden
ended at the bottom of the Super League, and will
now be relegated to the <ordinary> Nations Cup
league next year.

MA (September 20, 2003)--Alyssa Erickson of New Caanan,

Jumper Classic at the Marshall & Sterling League National
Indoor Finals. Alyssa bested a field of twenty-seven horse
and rider pairs in a competition that was filled with excitement.
Second place by a split went to Billy Worthington of Averil
Park, New York, aboard Cricket. Finishing in third place
was Clementine Goutal of New York, New York, riding Lightfeet.
Competitors
negotiated an eleven-obstacle first round course designed
by David Ballard of Hornby, Ontario. Thirteen riders went

- Ireland Takes Euro Fourth, Wins Olympic Ticket
THOUGH
riding with only three horses after the fatal fall
of Austin O'Connor's <Horseware Fabio> yesterday
(Saturday) the Irish Eventing team held on to its
overnight fourth position in the European Eventing
Championships at Punchestown today (Sunday) with Susan
Shortt maintaining her nerve for a clear show jumping
round, and team-mates Sherelle Duke and Trish Donegan
collecting eight and 12 faults, respectively.
The
result confirms Ireland's team place in Eventing at
the Athens Olympics 2004, where they will join the
Irish show jumping team, who qualified at Donaueschingen,
Germany, in August.

training horses. This is a secondhand story, but the

Show
Jumping - Kerrygold Grand Prix League - Flynn Wins
Punchestown, Smyth Takes Title
IT
WAS an Army victory at the final competition of the
2003 Kerrygold Grand Prix League today (Saturday),
but no-one could catch the League hero, 33 yr old
Peter Smyth from Strabane, who already had the League
title in the bag, and had no need to jump today.
Which
was fortunate, as Smyth arrived at the International
Sport Horse Show at Punchestown on crutches, having
broken his ankle at a riding accident at home.
Capt.
Gerry Flynn, riding the Minister for Defence's <Bornacoola>,
won today's final Grand Prix in the lashing rain,
but it was the fourth place of Lt. David O'Brien on
<Boherdeal Clover> that clinched second place
for him in the overall League placings, overtaking
James Kernan.

Third In Barcelona Queen's Cup
KEEPING
up the Irish pressure at the Barcelona Super League
venue today (Saturday), 23 yr old Kildare rider Cian
O'Connor mixed it with the senior German aces Ludger
Beerbaum and Lars Nieberg in pursuit of the Lexus
Trophy at the Queen's Cup competition in the heat
of Barcelona. The trophy was, of course, a Lexus car.
And
though he failed to badly dent German supremacy or
win the vehicle, O'Connor nevertheless walked away
with a cash prize of 4000 euro, slotting <Waterford
Crystal> comfortably into third place in a field
of 34 top international riders.

Sacks Claims the Charles Owen Children's Medal |
WORCESTER,
MA (September 19, 2003)--Olivia Sacks of New York, New York,
claimed top honors in the Charles Owen Children's Medal
Finals at the Marshall & Sterling League National Indoor
Finals. Hundreds of Marshall & Sterling League members
competed all year long to earn points to qualify for a place
at the Finals. A total of 61 riders were invited to compete
at Worcester's Centrum Centre-the League's new indoor venue
in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Olivia
Sacks was the first rider to enter the ring for the competition.
Interestingly, after all 60 successive riders had taken
their turns in the ring, her first round score of 82.67
remained undefeated. In the second round, Olivia received
an 86, for an overall score of 84.34 and the win. Olivia
rode Jameson, owned by Dorothy Burke of Old Brookville,
New York. She trains with Molly Flaherty of Arcadia Farm,
Yorktown Heights, New York.

Eventing
- Ireland Pushes Into European Medal Contention
DESPITE
the tragic death of one of its horses, the Irish Eventing
team pushed itself into fourth position after the
cross-country stage of the European Eventing Championships
at Punchestown today (Saturday).
Austin
O'Connor's horse, <Horseware Fabio> died after
stumbling at Fence No. 15, hitting its head on the
second step of the fence. The rider sustained no serious
injuries.
However,
Austin's three team-mates - Susan Shortt, Trish Donegan
and Sherelle Duke - produced such good performances
that Ireland improved on its overnight 7th position
to end the day in fourth.

Aside
from a European Championship medal, Ireland must end the
weekend in a position that will secure qualification for
the 2004 Athens Olympics in 2004. With Britain and France
previously qualified, this means in practice that Ireland
must be one of the three teams in the top five at Punchestown,
Britain and France currently holding the top two European
Championship places.

Equine Fund to hold inaugural Family Luncheon at The Palm
Beach Polo Equestrian Club
Wellington,
Florida – September 19, 2003 – The American Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (the “ASPCA”)
has announced that it will hold its first, annual Family
Luncheon at the The Palm Beach Polo Equestrian Club in Wellington
on Sunday, February 1, 2004 beginning at noon. The event
will benefit the ASPCA’s Equine Fund.
The
Luncheon will take place during the first grand prix of
The 2004 Winter Equestrian Festival. The Festival, heading
into its 32nd year, is the preeminent U. S. horse show for
the equestrian disciplines of hunters, jumpers and dressage.
The Festival, which stays in Wellington for eight weeks
and then goes on to Tampa for the last two weeks, brings
over 4,000 horses and over 6,000 people to Palm Beach County.

Announces Dates for 2004 Olympic Games Show Jumping
Selection Trials

States Equestrian Team (USET) has announced that the
Show Jumping Selection Trials for the 2004 Athens
Olympic Games will be held in Del Mar and San Juan
Capistrano, CA.
Trials
will be held May 14-15 at the Del Mar Horse Park in
Del Mar and May 22-23 at Oaks Blenheim in San Juan
Capistrano. These two sites previously hosted highly-successful
trials for the 2000 Olympics and 2002 World Equestrian
Games.

MA (September 19, 2003)--Kimberly Jungherr of Amesbury,
Massachusetts, rode Roscoe to victory in the $7,500 Adult
Jumper National Championship at the Marshall & Sterling
League National Indoor Finals. Jungherr bested a field of
30 horse and rider pairs, sealing her victory with a very
fast jump-off time of 29.38 seconds. Only fractions of a
second behind, for second place, was Zara Davies of Annville,
Pennsylvania, and her mount Waiting for Godot. Third place
