Pletcher Wins Chronicle Professional WCHR Hunter Rider
Title At Capital Challenge
By Diana De Rosa
Peter Pletcher took a moment to take it all in after
he won the 2002 Chronicle of the Horse Professional
World Championship Hunter Rider title. The Challenge
was sponsored by Carol & Gordon Stillwell, Stillwell
Hansen, Inc. and Jack Schock and First Savings Mortgage
Corporation, presented by the American Hunter Jumper
Foundation (AHJF) and hosted on October 4, during
the eight-day Capital Challenge Horse Show at the
Prince George's Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro,
MD.
|
Four
riders qualified for the final competition: Sandy Ferrell,
Churchville, MD; Scott Stewart, Flemington, NJ; Emily Williams,
Wellington, FL and Pletcher, Magnolia, TX. He and the others
had competed in this class before and felt that "doing
it before helped. Emily was more nervous because this was
her first time." For Pletcher it was his third try
and his first victory. "I'm really glad," he admitted.
"I've wanted to win this class ever since they started
it. It's a very special class for me to win."
The riders alternated on riding four different horses which
they had not ridden before. These included Special Delivery,
a 12-year-old grey Dutch gelding by Largos owned and trained
by Geoff Teall; Notra Dame, a 7-year-old Dutch Warmblood
mare owned by Megan McGuire, and trained by Amanda Steege-Herrara;
Capito, a 10-year-old chestnut Warmblood gelding, owned
by Karen Healey; and Gandolf, a 10-year-old bay, Hanoverian
gelding, owned by Sue Grange and trained by Don Stewart.

Horses
and Fireworks - An Explosive Combination
A
leading horse welfare charity is putting out a warning
to all those holding events involving fireworks this
November 5th to please inform local horse owners.
The ILPH (International League for the Protection
of Horses) is appealing to everybody organising a
firework event, whether a big display or a just a
happy gathering in a back garden, to make sure that
they give horse owners in their area advance warning.
|
Says
Nadine Hawkes, Operations Support Manager at the ILPH, "Most
people look forward to bonfire night, but for horse owners
it can be a worrying time. Many horses and ponies can become
stressed and upset by both the sight and sound of fireworks
going off and if they are out in their fields it could have
tragic consequences."

GLC
5500 Is The Latest In Joint Care
American Thoroughbred Products Ltd has recently
launched the latest development in joint care supplements
in the UK. GLC 5500 is the first joint supplement
to offer a combination of the full spectrum of bio-available
glucosamine compounds plus chondroitin sulphate
whose functions have already been clearly established.
This new, patent pending formulation provides only
active ingredients in significant concentrations,
verified using United States Pharmacopoeia testing
protocols, with no binders or fillers. GLC 5500
optimises cell membrane function to facilitate the
transfer of ingredients to the joints for maximum
uptake and absorption, providing the foundation
for optimal joint health.
|
GLC
5500 has already been hugely successful in the USA and is
widely used by top trainers and veterinary surgeons. Martha
Rodgers, equine lameness specialist at Rood & Riddle
Veterinary Hospital, Lexington, Kentucky said "GLC's
exclusive formula takes a logical approach to oral joint
supplementation. The higher concentrations provide the proper
ratios to benefit developing and mature cartilage."
Michael Dickinson, three times champion NH trainer in the
UK, has been training in the USA since 1987. He says "GLC
5500 made a major contribution to my 39% win rate last year
(2001), which included three Group 1 winners".

"Doing
A Little Good"
"When
was the last time we did a little good?" This
is the conscience-pricking question a little coffee-table
book from Singapore seems to be asking its readers.
Commissioned by Siemens Singapore, 'Doing A Little
Good' is a surprisingly polished publication with
a chic design of black & white photographs and
interestingly engaging text. To think this book has
been produced by a student team at the School of Film
& Media Studies, Ngee Ann Polytechnic. True to
their experience, this book reveals the story of the
team of writers and photographers who wandered into
RDA Singapore to tell its story. It was work. But
the culture shock of the mundane confronting a simple
good offered a refreshing wake-up call for the team.
It was as if everyday people had ventured into an
alien utopia of pure altruism. It's the same experience
many people will feel if they allow themselves to
volunteer, to do something other than for themselves,
to do a little good.
|
At
the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA Singapore),
these occasions of kindness and giving are de rigueur, actually
commonplace. RDA Singapore freely assists disabled persons
to gain balance, movement, muscle tone and self-confidence
from learning to ride a horse. Founded in 1982, RDA Singapore
started with just 5 riders, and today, helps more than 100
disabled riders every week. A registered charity, RDA Singapore
relies entirely on volunteers to run the therapeutic riding
program, and donations from the public to meet operating
expenses.

Farm shop successfully opened by Tony Dobbin
Champion
jockey Tony Dobbin, the 1997 Grand National Winner,
officially opened Jobsons Farm Health Penrith Shop
with a Worms, Wheezes and Wines evening, held on 3rd
October.

owners and equine enthusiasts from all over Cumbria
to get some advice and information about horse care.
Phil
Jobson, Managing Director of Jobsons, presented Tony
Dobbin with a cheque as a donation to the Injured
Jockeys Society.
As
a family event, children were entertained with a lucky
dip and drawing competition and were also eager to
see Kathryn from Kathryn's Riding School, Lazonby
trim 'Arthur' the horse's locks in a clipping demonstration.
Further Seasonal advice was given by suppliers and
a qualified veterinary rep, who gave talks and advice
on feeding rules, worming regimes and respiratory
disease.

Cold
weather will soon be upon us.
Cold feet solutions
The
"Chill" range of Equitector riding boots
is the best solution to cold feet problems on offer
to riders!
They
are superior to any other cold weather boot available
on the market and perform superbly.
The technology applied is the same as that in the
boots which we manufacture for the use in cold storage
facilities (deep freeze storage rooms) and they are
guaranteed to keep your feet warm to minus 25 C.
The award winning Chill Buster and Chill Master Riding
Boots with Climate Control are very different from
other winter boots.
|
They
are not thermally lined but have an unique heat reflective
membrane attached to the lining and insole making an insulative
interior, that will keep your feet at body temperature in
all weathers.
The
foot temperature will remain constant because the body heat
is trapped inside the boot and can not escape into the atmosphere.
The foot is fully enclosed and will no longer be affected
by the outside temperature and will not overheat. Therefore
when the outside temperature rises, because there is no
climate change inside your boot, you will not get sweaty
feet.
In
fact the system works in reverse in hot weather and keeps
your feet cool.

First
Kingston Baby Arrives
Kingston, National USET Champion and former USDF Horse
of the Year, has his first baby on the ground. The
colt called King's Cross bears a striking resemblance
to his father. "It's absolutely amazing; the
colt looks like a miniature Kingston," said Leslie
Morse, Kingston's rider and trainer. "I've never
seen a stallion stamp his get in this way."
The foal has Kingston's upright neck, long legs, and
short back, making him a perfect, tiny dressage horse.
Kingston, by Voltaire, is an approved Oldenburg and
also recently approved by Rheinland-Pfalz Saar International.

NJ, October 5-6.
Amy
Lowrey of Armonk, NY, 20, finished second in her
first Talent Search Final and Courtney McKay, 17
of Ocala, FL was third. Krista Freundlich, 17, of
Locust, NJ, rounded out the top four.
The third time was the charm for McCormack, trained
by Frank Madden of Colts Neck, NJ, who placed eleventh
in 2001 and seventh three years ago. McCormack could
not believe her good fortune.
|
Its
really exciting, said McCormack, who last month won
the $25,000 Calvin Klein Show Jumping Talent Derby at the
Hampton Classic Horse Show. I cant believe I
won, especially here in Gladstone, its such a special
place.

How
Equine Reiki Helped Cloudy
Cloudy
for me was by no means an unusual case. Until recently he
had been at a very good and professionally run riding school.
However, he had picked up an injury that had rendered him
unable to work and the owner had sent him away for a bit
of rest and recuperation to see if it would help. I first
saw him when he had been resting for 3 weeks. The owner
had come to the conclusion that cloudy was not happy in
the riding school and thought he would be better off in
a private home.
There
were several things that were apparent about Cloudy.
1. There was a "stirring" action with the right
hind leg that would have made it impossible to pass a vetting.
2. He was roach backed.
3. He could not cross through when spun in a circle in either
direction.
4. He could not stand with his hind legs square.
5. He seemed generally quite depressed despite the 3 weeks
of freedom.

Tendencies
of the Typical Horse out on the Trail
Horses are definitely unpredictable animals, and that
is what makes trail riding such a dangerous sport.
Just the same, there are a few things that seem to
hold true for most horses in most situations. Of course,
there are always exceptions to the rules, and sometimes
a predictable horse will do something very
uncharacteristic. Here are a few things to keep in
mind when you wonder how your horse will act in a
particular situation. They can help you know what
to expect and guide you to make safe decisions.

Riders Win Back-to-Back National Trail Championships
Last
year's champions in the International Arabian Horse
Association (IAHA) National Competitive Trail Ride
Championship repeated their victories in 2002. Ellen
Schwartz and her Arabian mare Shazanna S Glory and
Chris Eickleberry and her Half-Arabian/ Half-Appaloosa
gelding WR Cowboy, won second championship trophies
at the 2002 two-day, 72-mile ride held at Big Hill
Lake State Park in Cherryvale, Kansas, over Labor
Day weekend. Their lucky charm? Togetherness. Last
year they rode together. This year the two Indianans
took it a step further. They drove together, camped
together and won together.
|
Not
only was good fortune smiling on Schwartz and Eickleberry,
but the homework the pair did weeks before the ride paid
off. "We practiced camping the month before,"
says Eickleberry, who lives in Columbus, which is approximately
170 miles from Monroe where Schwartz lives. "We set
up our pens and trailered our horses together to make
sure they got along. Then we took two days to get to the
ride and arrived early on Wednesday so the horses had
time to relax."
They
even had a plan to ease the tense moments that inevitably
develop during a ride. "We're both alpha mares,"
jokes Eickleberry. "So we apologized to each other
in advance."

Steps
To Success For Your Horse Business
By
Lisa Derby Oden
So you run a horse business. And you have noticed that some
horse businesses come and go with the blink of an eye. You
are determined that this will not
be the case for you. You are in this to stay, and are looking
for the key to success. There are three key competency areas
in running your horse business. These are technical skills,
business skills, and process skills. Technical skills are
those that revolve around the horses. Will you personally
be providing the care? How experienced are you with horse
care? Do you know the requirements for their good health?
Can you recognize when something is wrong? Can you provide
proper follow-up care for medical treatment when necessary?
What is your experience level for riding/training? If you
provide these services, do you seek ongoing education and
development in the health/care/riding/training areas?
If you employ someone to handle any of these services, are
they trained in these areas? Do they pursue ongoing education?
Horse owners and riders are more educated than in the past.
This is wonderful because it means that they are more deeply
involved and that resources are more readily available.
It also
means they will ask more challenging questions and will
be more particular in choosing health/care/riding/training
providers. It is up to you to be up
to the challenge.
