Dressage
at Devon to Host First-Ever NDSA IPEC Grade IV Invitational
Championship
Kingston,
RI — April 4, 2003 — Dressage at Devon will
host the first-ever National Disability Sports Alliance
(NDSA) IPEC Grade IV Championship for riders with physical
disabilities, September 23-28, 2003 in Devon, PA.
The NDSA Championship will consist of two classes. The
first is the Individual Competition in which riders
will perform a standard Grade IV dressage test, while
the second is a Musical Freestyle competition. Overall
placings in the NDSA Championship will be based on riders’
combined scores in both the Individual Competition and
the Freestyle. |
The
International Paralympic Equestrian Committee (IPEC) categorizes
riders with disabilities into Grades I-IV according to their
disabilities. Grade I consists of riders with the most severe
disabilities, while Grade IV is for those with the least.
The Individual Competition test for Grade IV is similar
to the USA Equestrian Level 4 test for able-bodied equestrians.
Grade
IV riders have impairment in one or two limbs or have some
visual impairment. Grade IV tests require lateral work and
include work at the walk, trot, and canter. Compulsory movements
include medium and collected trot, medium and free walk,
10-meter circles at the trot and canter, shoulder-in, half-pass
at the trot, simple changes of rein, half-pirouettes at
the walk, and rein back. Freestyles ridden at the Grade
IV level may comprise more difficult movements such as lateral
work at the canter and three-time sequence changes.

selection of new Accenture's Young Riders travelled to their
first International show of the year at Welkenraedt in Belgium.
Eight riders participated and collected a number of good
wins and placings:-
Ryan
Prater from Milton Keynes, Buckingham finished 3rd in the
Grand Prix on his father's 10 year old, Waylands Playboy.
Ryan also won a strong Accumulator class on Mrs S Forrest's
Bullands Ladalco. Braintree's
Michaela Russell had a very successful show winning the
Table A and Table C classes with her own 9 year old, Bay
Mare, Maverna and the 1.25m class on G W International's
Zerro. Michaela also finished 5th in the Grand Prix on Zerro.

BREAKING VICTORY FOR ULLA SALZGEBER
Ulla Sallzgeber and her horse Rusty won a record-breaking
World Cup Final in Göteborg, Sweden on March
30. The Grand Prix in the Scandinavium Sports arena
was attended by an audience of almost 5.000, while
the B-final for the lower placed participants by
a crowd of 9.000. The final was sold out with 11.034
tickets sold. It is the first time that a Dressage
World Cup Final is attended by over 25.000 spectators.

an increased number of points (80.338 pts), the World Cup
Champion Ulla Salzgeber (GER) is the undisputed leader of

went up four places from 10th to 6th rank with 74.972 points.
WORLD

World Cup Final to be held from 16 to 20 April in Las Vegas,
NV (USA).
The
best riders of the world qualified from 12 leagues over

Good
progression of the US riders A
few weeks before the World Cup Final, the American riders
are well represented in the Top 20 of the rankings with
McLain Ward at the 12th place (last month 17th), Beezie
Madden Patton 13th (previous rank 23), and Leslie Howard
17th.
Germany
dominates the Top 10 with 6 riders, including of course
World No 1 Ludger Beerbaum who is leading the rankings with
3546 points.

Freund
renews World Cup Champion title in Göteborg
Germany’s
Michael Freund has renewed his World Cup title in the crowded
Scandinavium arena in Göteborg. After four wins, the
World Champion of 1994 was already certain of his victory,
but he was of course keen on winning all five events. But
his fellow countryman Christoph Sandmann claimed the first
place in the last competition.

BEF
Leads Industry Working Party To Consider Passport
Legislation
Both
the British Equestrian Federation Board and British
Horse Industry Confederation have agreed that BEF
should lead an industry working party to consider
the passport legislation Statutory Instrument (SI),
and provide a consolidated industry view to go back
to DEFRA.
|
The
SI was released by DEFRA for the final phase of consultation
on Thursday 27 March 2003. A copy of the consultation letter
and draft legislation on horse passports has been placed
on the DEFRA website: www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/horsepassports/
Those
who attended the Equine Passport, Disease Surveillance and
Breeding Planning Team which produced industry recommendations
for DEFRA on how the passports legislation might be implemented,
last year, have been invited to join the new working party,
as well as representatives from the BEF Member Bodies. Representatives
from DEFRA have also been invited to attend to ensure that
the industry representatives will have immediate access
to the detail of the Government position.

Alberta,
Canada, To Support Popular Hickstead Class
One
of Hickstead's popular showjumping classes at the British
Jumping Derby Meeting is to be sponsored by Alberta, Canada,
and travel partners
The
Alberta Canada Salver, to be held in the International Arena
on August 14, first day of the meeting, will be sponsored
by Travel Alberta and its partners - Canadian Tourism Commission,
Rocky Mountaineer Railtours and The Independent Traveller/Ranch
Rider.
It
has been a popular class for some years, carrying £3,000
in prize money. Many leading riders use it to give experience
to younger horses, or to introduce horses to the famous
International Arena, which they say has an atmosphere "all
its own."
The
sponsorship could also benefit many of the 45,000-plus spectators
expected at the meeting, which runs from August 14 to 17.
A special offer exclusive to Hickstead will mean a £50

Gina
Miles Earns World Cup Berth at Galway Downs CIC-W***
Gina
Miles and McKinlaigh, World Equestrian Games veterans,
qualified for the inaugural Eventing World Cup scheduled
for Pau, France this October. Galway Downs hosted one
of two United States qualifying events, a great opportunity
for West Coast riders. Nineteen horses and riders vied
for one of three World Cup invitations during the March
28-30 event. |
Miles
rode a very solid dressage test and found herself in third
place. "He is really maturing," stated Davis of
the nine year old Irish-bred gelding owned by Thom Schultz.
"His dressage is much stronger." The second day,
cross country, was run under the CIC format adopted by the
FEI. This new format, which eliminates Roads and Tracks
an the Steeplechase, will be used at the 2004 Olympics,
as well as this year's inaugural World Cup. Miles and McKinlaigh
posted a clear cross country round and were easily within
the time.

Double
Blues for Molly Ashe At AGA National Jumper Championships
Wellington,
FL – April 3 – AGA National Jumper Championships
are in their 2nd day of competition at the Palm Beach Polo
Equestrian Club on Pierson Road in Wellington.
First
up in the Internationale Arena was Class 1007, the $2,500
1.45 m Time First Round. In this speed class a total of
43 horse and rider combinations were entered. Eleven horses
had fault-free rounds. Molly Ashe and King Louie were victorious
with an unbeatable time. Molly and King Louie were 16th
in the original order and still none of the following 27
riders bested her time on course. Rosewood Glen Ltd. owns
King Louie. Laura Kraut and Quickstar II Z were second in
72.266 seconds. Pasmore Stables of Kansas owns Quickstar
II Z.
Molly
Ashe won the second class in the Internationale Arena, a
Take Your Own Line Class. This time Molly was riding Subliem,
a Belgian Warmblood mare, for owner Ladson, LLC. Just 1/10
of a second behind Molly was second placed Leslie Howard
riding Eleusis De Breve. Duerne Ent. owns Eleusis De Breve.

Mounted
Games European Championships
Current British mounted champions Sussex dominated the European
Championships held at Gothenburg Scandinavium Horse Show
in Sweden. The international competition also saw Powys
representing Wales finish second with the home nation of
Sweden third, closely followed by Germany. In the pre-Scandinavium
competition Sussex also ran out the winners by 43 points,
closely followed by Powys on 40.
In the four-day competition held in the famous Scandinavium
arena Sussex used their considerable experience to remain
unbeaten. The team of Fliss Hotston Jones (Laura), Christian
Jones (Pebbles), Alex Jones (Red), Gemma Haws (Mizmi) and
Andrew Gledow (Christie) - trained by Clive Jones - dominated
the competition to run out winners on a total of 90 points.

Disability Sports Alliance Conducts Successful Forum
on Judging Dressage Riders With Physical Disabilities
Kingston,
RI—April 3, 2003—Following up on the success
of its initial judges forum last November, the National
Disability Sports Alliance (NDSA), in association with
USA Equestrian (USAE), held a forum on judging dressage
riders with physical disabilities at Quiet Oaks Farm
in Winter Garden, FL, March 17-19, 2003. |
The
forum, recognized by the International Paralympic Equestrian
Committee (IPEC), was designed to provide judges with an
overview of all aspects of judging dressage for riders with
disabilities. It included discussions of criteria for becoming
an IPEC international judge, IPEC rules and dressage tests,
USAE programs, and descriptions of recognized disabilities.
There were also demonstrations and actual opportunities
for judging riders with disabilities.

American Games Show Jumping Selection Trials to be
Held at Lexington, Kentucky, May 10-17
Gladstone,
NJ—April 3, 2003—The United States Equestrian
Team (USET) has announced plans for the 2003 Pan American
Games show jumping selection trials to take place
at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY, May 10-17.
Six
rounds of jumping will be held over four days and
will be used to decide the team of four horse-and-rider
combinations plus an alternate to represent the United
States at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic, August 2-17
The first trial will be on Saturday, May 10. The second
and third trial, where each horse-and-rider combination
will jump the same course twice, will follow on Sunday,
May 11. Trial number four will take place on Thursday,
May 15. In the final trial on Saturday, May 17, each
horse-and-rider combination will jump two different
courses.

Galway
Downs Hosts Successful Event
While
the inaugural CIC-W*** was definitely the highlight
of three days of eventing at Galway Downs, March 28-30,
competition was keen in the other divisions as well.
Robyn Fisher, a student at U.C. Davis, discovered that
consistency pays off. In the CIC**, Fischer rode Le
Samurai for a solid dressage test that put them in 5th.
With a clean cross country round, the pair moved up
to 4th. |
Going
into stadium Fischer needed a clear round in order to have
a shot at the top spot. When Kristi Nunnink, Kristin Bachman,
and James Moore, sitting in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively
all dropped multiple rails, Fisher took over the top spot.
This was Fischer's first CIC** and she plans to compete
in Colorado and then she hopes to qualify for Fair Hill.

World Cup dressage Final breaking records

audience of almost 5.000, while the B-final for the lower
placed participants by a crowd of 9.000. The final was sold
out with 11.034 tickets sold. It is the first time that
a Dressage World Cup Final is attended by over 25.000 spectators.
Eighteen riders from seven nations, - another record number
- competed for prizes 200.000,-- Swiss Francs, including
a high-end Volvo XC 90 for the winner.
For the first time the World Cup was divided in an A- and
a B-final. Eighteen riders competed in the Grand Prix, won
by Salzgeber/Rusty with a 77,40 % score in front of Debbie
McDonald from the United States with Brentina, 72,28 % and
Isabell Werth with Anthony from Germany, 71,60 %. Twelve
riders went on to compete in the Kür to Music for the
A-final, six riders competed in the B-final. The A-final
included four riders from Germany, three from the USA, and
one rider each from Switzerland, Great Britain, Russia,
Sweden and the Netherlands. For the first time in World
Cup history the judges' panel of five consisted of different
judges in the Grand Prix, the B-final and the A-final.

Horse Society grants Honorary Fellowship to Ferdi Eilberg
The
British Horse Society is delighted to announce that
it has granted an Honorary Fellowship to Ferdi Eilberg,
renowned dressage trainer and rider, in recognition
of his services to horsemanship. He has been closely
involved with the BHS for many years and leads the Society's
Fellowship courses which are sponsored by the Worshipful
Company of Saddlers. |
Granting
the Fellowship is the highest accolade the Society can bestow
on a trainer as it represents the pinnacle of equestrian
professional qualifications. There are just 53 BHS Fellows
and of these only Christopher Bartle is an Honorary appointment,
all the others having taken an examination.
Ferdi,
who is 49 years old and based in Worcestershire, spent his
early life in Germany, serving an apprenticeship with Olympic
Gold medallist Dr Reiner Klimke before coming to England
in 1980. Eleven years later Ferdi took out British citizenship
and has achieved major successes as a top-level dressage
competitor in this country including representing Great
Britain at two European Championships, in 1993 and 1995,
and at the World Equestrian Games in 1994.

Engle Wins 3 Classes Today! - 1.40 m Class, 1.30 m Class
and 1.35 m Class!
Wellington,
Fl – April 2, 2003 – AGA National Jumper Championship
began with wonderful sun and dry temperatures in the low
80’s – beautiful weather for a competition. This
all jumper competition continues through Sunday, April 6.
In
the Internationale Arena, the $2,500 1.40 m Time First Jump
Off saw fifty-five horses attempt the course. With clean
first rounds, 18 horses returned to contest the shortened
jump off course. Out of those horses, 12 horses had clean
rounds in the jump off.
Laura
Kraut and Wet Paint were the fastest and won the class in
a time of 25.191 seconds. Wet Paint is a Paint gelding by
Buddy Sacket out of Scenic Sweet Kitty and is owned by the
Pin Oak Farm of Lake Forest, Illinois. Rich Fellers from
Oregon and McGuinness were second with 26.799 seconds. McGuinness
is owned by Harry & Molly Chapman of Wilsonville, OR.
In 27.077 seconds was third place, Molly Ashe riding King
Louie. King Louie is owned by Rosewood Glen Ltd.

World Cup Final

Vegas, NV—April 2, 2003—Forty-two riders from
sixteen countries have qualified to compete at Budweiser
World Cup 2003, the Show Jumping World Cup Final, April
16-20, at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, NV.
This
elite group of the world’s best riders has earned the
right to compete in Las Vegas by qualifying from eight leagues
over the past year. They will compete amid the glitz and
glamour of the Las Vegas lights. The United States, with
14, and Germany, with 10, have the greatest number of athletes
participating in the competition.

Wins $200,000 Budweiser American Invitational to Culminate
Winter Equestrian Festival
Tampa,
FL—April 2, 2003— The $200,000 Budweiser American
Invitational, March 29, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa,
FL, capped off eleven weeks of intense competition, which
comprised the Winter Equestrian Festival. The event, which
crowned Chris Kappler of Pittstown, NJ, aboard Royal Kaliber
champion of the evening, put an exclamation point on an
already incredible circuit.
In
the final week of competition in Florida, the Tournament
of Champions CSI-W, March 25-29, Chris Kappler and Royal
Kaliber, a horse he co-owns with Kathy Kamine, won the winter’s
most highlighted event. Kappler topped a star-studded field
of riders representing Argentina, Canada, France, Germany,
Ireland and the United States to win one of the largest
purses in all of show jumping, the $200,000 Budweiser American
Invitational.

and team Olympic medallist Ginny Elliot MBE has secured
a new sponsorship deal with leading saddlery manufacturers
E. Jeffries and Sons.
The triple Badminton and five times Burghley winner,
European and World Championship victor is embarking
on a new nationwide training series in addition to her
usual clinics and coursewalks around the country, and
will be involved in new product development at Jeffries.

The
day before the show
First step is to lead him into a clean bed-free stable.
With luke warm water I start on his hoofs scrubbing with
a stiff brush and scraping off all the mess, working my
way up his legs.
Next wet his tail and remove all loose dirt, then his mane
and forelock, lastly his back.
When the entire loose dirt has been removed, I then repeat
the process with a good quality shampoo (I use Head and
Shoulders, it is good and works out to be very economical.)
I always try to avoid shampoo around the eyes nostrils and
inside his ears, as the mucous membranes can get sore. I
do have a little trick for not letting the soapsuds into
the nostrils and above all the eyes; this is to smear ALVASHADOW
around the eyes and nostrils before using the shampoo. This
I find helps to stop the shampoo from entering these areas
and also has a calming effect on the nervous or worried
Horse. Leave on for a great shine.
I have found it better to pour the shampoo along the brush
when in the upside down position (the brush, not me) and
then scrub the horse slowly to start, giving him time to
realize it is nice to be massaged. When I have scrubbed
him all over I rinse off all the shampoo and repeat the
process again until the rinsing water dripping from under
his belly is clear.
I then give him his final wash with ALVATEATREE MEDICATED
SHAMPOO.

Priestley
Cream of the Dengie Crops
The
Irish determined to make the finals of the Dengie Winter
League Show Jumping Championships their own for the second
year in succession and Co. Down’s, Lisa Priestley,
aged 15, (Iveagh) duly obliged with a blistering clear round
in a time of 30.19 over Stephen Martin’s 8 fence jump
off course.
A
record 82 finalists congregated at Warwickshire College
on Saturday (29th March) from an original line-up of 4,500
starters at 120 Centres for the seventh finals of this hugely
popular series.
The
table A7 course for the main event after lunch produced
32 clear rounds after a stuttering start with only one clear
in the first seven rounds. But then came the clears thick
and fast. The first two to go Chloe Hill (Derwent Hunt)
and Georgina Morris (Oakley Hunt West), went round in blistering
times and with the majority still to go, the crowd thought
it was all over. Six rounds later though, enter Lisa Priestley
who went round like a rocket on Dolly (30.19) and found
the fastest line over the first three fences where even
an experienced international might have struggled to find
the right line.

2003 HorseTV News and Program Schedule!

2003
Gladstone,
NJ—April 1, 2003—Debbie McDonald of Hailey,
ID was named the United States Equestrian Team (USET)
Athlete of the Month for March after she finished
second in the 2003 Dressage World Cup Final in Gothenburg,
Sweden. McDonald produced the best finish ever turned
in by a U.S. rider at the Dressage World Cup Final.
McDonald, riding Brentina, owned by Peggy Thomas,
finished second with a score of 72.28% in the Grand
Prix which was used to determine the starting positions
for the Grand Prix Freestyle where she earned her
second-place finish with a score of 78.89%.

Government
acknowledges ragwort threat to equine welfare
Speaking
in support of a Private Member's Bill on ragwort control,
Minister for the Horse, the Rt Hon Alun Michael acknowledged
that ragwort poses a real threat to equine welfare.
During his speech in the House of Commons last Friday
(21 March) he also said that he was keen to ensure that
the Government play a full part in controlling the spread
of ragwort. |
Following
the Bill's Second Reading it now passes to Committee stage
for further debate and agreed amendments before returning
to the House for a Third Reading

Smith Qualifies For World Cup In Las Vegas |
Robert
Smith riding Marius Claudius was equal eighth in the World
Cup qualifying competition at Goteborg last Saturday giving
him five points and assuring him of qualification for the
final in Las Vegas 16th - 20th April 2003. Robert also won
the World Cup preliminary competition and a 1.50m International,
on Thursday and Friday last, both riding Mr Springfield.
Robert
is the only British rider to qualify for the World Cup final
2003.

U.S. Show Jumping Riders Qualify for Budweiser World Cup
2003
Las
Vegas, NV—March 31, 2003—Fourteen U.S. show jumping
riders have qualified to compete in the Budweiser World
Cup 2003, the FEI Show Jumping World Cup Final, April 16-20,
in Las Vegas, NV. The riders earned the right to compete
in the Final by being the top finishers in their respective
Leagues.
Eight
riders qualified from the U.S.A. East Coast League –
McLain Ward of Brewster, NY; Norman Dello Joio, Lauren Hough,
Margie Engle, and Candace King of Wellington, FL; Beezie
Madden of Cazenovia, NY; Leslie Howard of Westport, CT;
and Laura Kraut of Oconomowoc, WI.
In
addition, four riders qualified from the U.S.A. West Coast
League – Richard Spooner of Burbank, CA; Nicole and
Will Simpson of Westlake Village, CA; and John French of
Menlo Park, CA.
Peter
Wylde, individual Bronze Medalist in the Show Jumping World
Championships at the 2002 World Equestrian Games, was granted
a Wild Card invitation by the International Equestrian Federation
(FEI), and Robert Chelberg, an American living in Prague,
qualified from the Central European League.
The Budweiser World Cup 2003 will be the fifth World Cup
Final held in the United States. Previous Finals were held
in Baltimore (1980), Tampa (1989), Del Mar (1992) and Las
Vegas (2000).

Springfield continues on winning form at Goteborg
The
Goteborg (SWE) CSI W, from March 27th to 30th, brought
further success for Mister Springfield (ISH) and his
rider Robert Smith (GBR). Following their win on Thursday
in the 1m50 International Jumping Competition, they
went on to take first in Fridays 1m50 qualifier for
the Grand Prix FEI World Cup. |
Liscalgot
(ISH) and Dermott Lennon (IRL) came seventh in the same
class.
Frisky
IV (ISH), ridden by Ludger Beerbaum (GER), was also competing
at Goteborg. This partnership took fourth place in the 1m50
on Thursday and third in Sundays 1m40 class.
Further
afield in the US, Carling King (ISH) and Kevin Babington
(IRL) came tenth in the Tampa, Florida CSI W $200,000 Grand
Prix.

With the Only Double Clear Round
Tampa, FL – March 29, 2003 – The $200,000 Budweiser
American Invitational had 30 horse and rider combinations
attempt the course. Steve Stephens designed the course,
which had a triple combination that was difficult for a
number of horses.
In the first round, one horse was eliminated and two entries
voluntarily withdrew. The sixth horse to compete was Eric
Lamaze of Canada riding Rosina. This pair produced the first
clear round but unfortunately had 2 time faults for a total
of 2 faults on course. The course at this point looked difficult
with a slightly tight time.
The 13th horse to challenge the course was Priobert de Kalvarie
with Leslie Howard and they were the first combination to
produce a clean round. Others qualifying for the jump off
included Markus Beerbaum with Royal Discovery; Jeffery Welles
and Ursa Major; Anne Kursinski and Eros; Meredith Beerbaum
and Shutterfly; Chris Kappler and Royal Kaliber; Candice
King and Gosse D’Orion. Two riders representing Germany
– husband and wife Markus and Meredith Beerbaum made
the jump off. The other 5 riders were representing the U.S.

Tampa,
FL-March 31, 2003-The Show Jumping Hall of Fame conducted
its annual induction ceremonies during the intermission
at the Budweiser American Invitational on March 29 at Raymond
James Stadium in Tampa, FL. Harry R. Gill, Clarence L. "Honey"
Craven, Calypso, and Gem Twist were inducted into the Show
Jumping Hall of Fame. These join 45 previous inductees whose
contributions to the sport set them apart and earned them
the honor of enshrinement in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame.
A
lifelong horseman, Harry R. Gill has been a major force
in the world of Grand Prix Show Jumping. A longtime supporter
of some of show jumping's leading riders, Gill has owned
many of the country's most famed horses. One of the sport's
foremost authorities on footing, Gill has served the industry
by improving horse show venues and riding conditions, and
as a member of several Boards of Directors and Organizing
Committees
Gill's
slew of champions is headed by the legendary Idle Dice,
a charter inductee into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. Ridden
to greatness by Hall of Famer Rodney Jenkins, "Ike,"
won honors as the AHSA Horse of the Year, rode for the USET
in the 1974 World Championships and won the American Gold
Cup three times. Gill also owned the PHA Horse of the Year,
Gustavus; the AHSA Horse of the Year, Beanbag; and the AGA
Horse of the Year, Viktor. Other horses ridden under Gill's
ownership included such superstars as Number One Spy, Sloopy,
Brendan, Philco, French Rapture, Ping Pong, Robin Hood,
Another March and Twist du Valon.

The
Training Tree: Impulsion
WAVERLY, WV--A lot of horses that intend to play the
higher level games can get along in life quite nicely
if they get this far on the training tree. If a horse
has rhythm, relaxation, and freedom of gaits, if a horse
accepts contact on both reins, can move straight, and
is balanced, then that horse is farther along in his
training than 90 percent of the horses out there. He’ll
do OK at lower level competitions and be a real pleasure
as a trail horse. |
If
you want to play the upper level games, however, the horse
needs to continue his body building program. He needs to
develop impulsion, suppleness, and learn how to be on the
rider’s aids so he can achieve true collection. These
are the skills he needs to be a grand prix dressage horse
or a super reining horse or a really agile cutting horse.
The
horse has rear engine drive. Impulsion describes the powerful
thrust from the hindquarters that propels the horse forward.
Impulsion is the surge that occurs when the horse’s
hindquarters push off the ground. With impulsion, there’s
an elasticity and spring to the horse’s forward movement.
A rider needs an independent seat and an understanding of
how to coordinate aids in order to ask the horse for impulsion.
The
only place you can actually see impulsion in gaits like
the trot, canter, and gallop that have a moment of suspension
(there’s always a foot on the ground when the horse
is walking so you won’t see impulsion at that gait).
The more impulsion a horse has, the longer that moment of
suspension will be. Think of a jumper’s take off or
a dressage horse doing an extended trot and you can picture
impulsion.
To check to see if you have true impulsion, pick two spots
in your arena. Ride at an ordinary, working trot and count
the number of strides between those two points. When you
come around again, ask the horse to lengthen, to give you
a bigger stride with more impulsion from behind. Count the
strides again. If you actually have impulsion, if you get
the lengthening, there will be fewer steps between the two
points. If you get more strides, if the horse quickens his
strides when you add a driving leg, he hasn’t yet developed
the muscles to create impulsion.

6th At Gothenburg - Qualifies For World Cup Final
IRELAND'S
Trevor Coyle tonight (Saturday) secured his place in
the April Show Jumping World Cup Final in Las Vegas
with a sixth place in the final qualifying competition
of the season at Gothenburg, Sweden, earning himself
a vital ten points, which now places him at 14th in
the World Cup Rankings. Only 18 riders from Western
Europe, plus the reigning World Cup holder, Rodrigo
Pessoa, can compete for the Cup. |
Coyle
last qualified for the World Cup in 1999, when he impressively
finished in Second Place at the Final with the Irish-bred
stallion <Cruising>. Until recently, however, he has
held a low profile on the international jumping scene, but
this season bounced back into the limelight with a string
of new horses owned by the Beverley Farm Stud in California,
the most prominent being Fleur, whom Coyle piloted to 6th

Jeffery
Welles and Equinox Win the $20,000 1.50 m Classic
Tampa, FL – March 28 – Four horses made
it to the jump off in the $20,000 1.50 m Classic at the
Tournament of Champions. There were 29 horses to start the
class with a course designed by Mehves Trak of Turkey. This
course was quite big and faults were scattered about the
course. First back in the jump off was McLain Ward of Brewster,
New York riding Galant. They were very fast with an inside
turn to the in-and-out and finished with 4 faults in 29.946
seconds. Next was Jeffery Welles riding Equinox, a Dutch
Warmblood gelding. The pair was fast and clean but he did
lose a little momentum on the tight inside turn but finished
in 31.432 seconds. Arriscraft Rocca and Keean White from
Canada were next in the jump off and beat Jeffery’s
time but had 4 faults. Last to go in the jump off was Rich
Fellers from California, he and McGuinness completed the
course with 4 faults. Jeffery and Equinox were the only

all want to do the best for our horses,” says Don Blazer,
author and trainer. “And it is always a bonus when
you can provide great care for your horse while saving a
buck or two.”
You
don’t need to spend big bucks on fancy medication shampoos
to get the “grunge” out of your horse’s ears
or off the front of the cannon bone on the hind legs, Blazer
points out. A helpful hint is the use of Windex. Spray a
little Windex on some cotton and it will quickly clean the
oily, waxy, dirt buildup from the horse’s ears. Or
use Windex to get the dirt off the front of hind cannon
bones. Just spray it on, and then use a rubber curry brush
to clean off the “grunge”.
