Strongid-P,
The nation's favourite
wormer, made its debut at this year's Equine Event giving horse
owners the unique opportunity to ask the experts about effective
worming, hear more about the practical issues involved and learn
about the benefits of using Strongid-P. |
Available in either Original or Caramel
paste, Strongid-P is a pyrantel based wormer that will effectively
control tapeworm when used twice a year at double the recommended
dose. It is also ideal when used routinely as a base wormer within
a regular worming programme to control roundworms, redworms and pinworms,
which is why manufacturer Pfizer Animal Health is encouraging horse
and pony owners to make sure it's part of their worming programme.

Thirsty Bedding
Equine Research Centre, Guelph,
Ontario
Absorbency is an important property
to consider when deciding which bedding to use for your stalls.
Your bedding should also be dust and mould free, supportive
and easy to use and dispose of. |
The more absorbent a bedding is, the
lower the levels of ammonia should be in the barn. In addition, the
added moisture may decrease dust levels. Absorbent beddings are easier
to muck out as the dirty bedding will tend to clump and may allow
less bedding to be used over all. The following charts illustrate
the varying abilities of common beddings to absorb water. Your choice
of bedding will depend on a combination of personal preference, cost
effectiveness, local availability and type of horse housed.

Horse Pasture Management
By Dave Robison, Forage &
Turf Agronomist, Ampac Seed Company
Horses . . . mighty, powerful,
majestic beasts of beauty. Although we picture a robust stallion
or a brood mare in a lush green pasture, such a backdrop isnt
reality for many, if not most horse owners. Most horse pastures
are far less than lush. However, establishing and maintaining
productive pastures isnt a difficult process. By following
a few simple steps, most pastures can become lush, green, and
quite productive.

Learning to Learn
Equine Research Foundation
They say you can't teach an old horse new tricks? But why not?
If horses are anything like other animals, mice, for instance,
you can not only teach them new things, but you may also be
able to increase their thinking ability. |
Horses are cognitive animals with great
learning capabilities yet many are subjected to unnatural lives in
dark stalls with nothing of interest happening daily except the delivery
of hay. Some get an hour of turnout a day and perhaps a half-hour
of mind-numbing lunging. Others are ridden over the same course with
little or no variation. And yet people wonder why these horses seem
dull compared to others that are played with regularly and have a
variety of stimuli and interesting challenges in their surroundings.
Horses who live in enriched environments are generally well-adjusted,
more alert, and can handle new situations better. Whether this is
due to an increase in brain cells is unknown but common sense tell
us that any organism living in a stimulating habitat will be enriched
by its experiences.

Body Conditioning Scoring:
A useful skill for horse owners
Equine Research Centre, Guelph,
Ontario
Body condition scoring is a hands-on,
subjective method for evaluating a horse's condition or fat
cover. |
During colder months, this method will
keep you aware of minor weight changes before your horse reaches a
serious (2-3) condition. Perfect for use in climates where winter
hair and blankets may hide the "real" horse. Temperature
extremes over extended time periods, may change feed requirements
to maintain a horse's condition. Lost condition may result in increased
training time and feed costs.

A Horse,

with Don Blazer
First man just ate the
horse. Later he discovered he could keep lame mares and milk
them. That was the beginning of the meat and milk industry.
Man's progress wasn't too swift until he got on the horse's
back, then the whole human race began to boogie.
Exactly when man domesticated the
riding horse is questionable. Which of the many human societies
first utilized the horse as a mount is debatable. But the fact
that progress went from a walk to a gallop once man and horse
became partners is undeniable.

The Kidney Meridian
In Shiatsu there are twelve meridians
each of which can have a powerful effect on balancing your horses
health. The meridians are paired with each other
and the sister meridian to the Bladder Meridian
is the Kidney Meridian. They are paired because one is the Yin
and the other the Yang Meridian and by working both you can
improve the results of each one separately. This is because
if one sister Meridian has an excess of energy the other will
show an energy deficiency. Stimulating both can alleviate the
imbalance.

If you are a horse, you
can be brindled, but you can't be brindle. At least not yet.
Brindled means having a coat streaked

there.
Brindle means a brindled coat
or a brindled animal. There are no registered brindles in the
horse world. That doesn't mean they aren't there, but rare;
it means they aren't registered.

The Fell Pony
The Fell Pony has been
recognisable as a breed since Roman times when they were employed
as draught animals in the north of England within local industry
and the building of the Roman walls. In addition, they were
the main form of transport for the raiding Picts and later on,
the Border Reivers - both of whom needed sure-footed ponies
with great stamina to assist in the success of their raiding
campaigns in the Border country. |
The biggest demand is for the family
riding pony, but registered Fells at the present time are being used
for pleasure and competitive riding, showing, driving, hunting, trekking,
shepherding and are very suitable for riding and driving for the disabled.
In temperament they are kindly and docile, though full of life and
energy. In fact it has been said that "you cannot put a Fell
Pony to the wrong job".

The Maitriser Schooling
Device
The Maitriser does not force a
horse into an outline. If the horse evades the bit by raising
his head, overbending, snatching or leaning on the bit, the
Maitriser corrects the evasion.
The horse is thus encouraged to
work without evasion.

Headshaking
Headshaking is a pain, metaphorically
and literally. There can be nothing more frustrating than being able
to neither ride your otherwise healthy horse nor understand why. Many
owners spend years worrying about the state of their tack or their
own riding ability in an attempt to explain this bizarre and potentially
dangerous behaviour. However, many equine scientists now believe that
headshaking is the result of a pain in the nose.

New Advice
on Ragwort Control
Ragwort is controlled more effectively
if treated out of season during the winter months when it is
at the seedling or rosette |
|
stage rather than the flower. This latest advice comes from
specialist agro-chemical company Barrier Biotech whose recent
trials show that 'out of season' spot application with BARRIER
H gives total kill with the need for less herbicide

Clicker Training - Getting
Familiar with the Clippers.
This is an area of training where
negative reinforcement plays a role. You can pair it with positive
reinforcement for faster results. The question of what to do
with your horse is one only you can answer. I normally work
with the horse on a lead rope. It is not necessary. It is helpful
if the horse does not have an acre of space. |
I show the horse the clippers. I let
the horse sniff the clippers. I do not train the horse to target the
clippers. Clippers can be dangerous for the horse to lip or bite.
Most horses will sniff the clippers. I then pat the horse with the
clippers in my hand. This will cause the cord to flop about since
the clippers are not plugged in. If your horse is already dancing
this is what you need to work on. Click and reward for any signs of
calmness. As soon as you click move the clippers and cord away from
your horse (negative reinforcement).
